  • We've been planning this Alaska RV road trip for over a year and we're doing it. Enough talk, let's walk! Well...we'll drive but you get the picture.
Taking our Class C to Alaska so we can get to some remote areas and drive on roads less traveled. We've taken our Big Rig before but this time will be different. We're going to Denali and Tek campground but also the Dalton highway and so much more.
Passing Mile 0 it has begun. We are starting our journey to Alaska this summer and driving the entire Alaska Highway to Delta Junction. We will travel through Canada at a safe, leisurely pace enjoying the country as we make our way above the 60th parallel.
Unseasonably warm in Alberta caused some wildfires to burn and gave us hazy, smokey skies for the first few days. We stayed in a variety of locations such as an abandoned provincial park, Muncho Lake and Laird HotSprings.
Love the Yukon Government Campgrounds with free firewood and very rustic sites. It's all part of the adventure.
The drive so far is uneventful with some epic views of Summit Lake, Laird HotSprings, the Sign Post Forest and the bridge at Teslin.
We've been fortunate to see bears, bison, elk and caribou as well as lots of mountain scenery.
Daily fuel stops will be a different sort of travel duty for us and they continue through this trip.
It will be fun and an adventure in a Class C plus, bigger than a vanlifer (Van Life) but smaller than a truck Super Class C. We'll scout out places for future visits to Alaska (there will be 4 of them).

    RV Camping
We like to Switch it Up between resorts and campgrounds.
Our journey is the destination. We want to share in our experiences in discovery of What's Next.
    I get my music from:
    Epidemicsound.com
    Tracks:
    Between Worlds by Adriel Fair
    Highland Morning by Rune Dale
My Heart takes over by Eden Maze
Waiting down the line by Wildflowers
Amazon Shop (no extra charge to you)
A convenient way to see (or buy) the items you see in the video's which may help in your adventure.

We use the TSD card for diesel fuel and save a bundle each time we fill up our Big Rig. We also use it to fill up our Onan generator.
The big blue boards (XL version) we use sometimes to get us "un-stuck" is from:
    Gotreads.com
Our Class C is built by Thor Motorcoach on a Ford F550 chassis. It's a production build Magnitude model XG32. We tow our red Jeep Wrangler Sahara behind it. We've made some modifications to it so that we can boondock comfortably. Lithium batteries, Victron 3000w multi-plus inverter, dual alternators charge while traveling and mods to the water system greatly enhance it's boondocking capabilities.
Our extreme completely custom 5th wheel is built on a semi-trailer chassis with air suspension and air brakes. Completely loaded it weighs 42,000 lbs rolling down the highway. And we do roll down the highway nearly every week. You see, we believe that if your home has wheels they should be used.
    Vehicles:
    2016 Volvo VNL780 "Voyager"
    2016 Smart fortwo "Pathfinder"
2019 SpaceCraft Custom built semi-trailer 5th wheel "Orion"
    2023 Thor Magnitude XG32 Class C "Curiosity"
    2017 Jeep Wrangler Sahara "Artemis"
    Power system:
3250 watts of solar with Panasonic panels
    30.1 KWH of Lithium batteries
2- 4K watt Magnum Inverters deliver power as if we are on shore power
2- 4K watt 240v Cotek Inverters deliver additional power for our LG Mini split HVAC and stove
Coachnet is our roadside assistance company we use but hopefully we don't use them too often. LOL
We are not sponsored by Whataburger but I do enjoy them anytime I can get my hands on one. They used to be just out of Texas but they have expanded.

Oh my, whatever will you do without Kale. Guess you will have to rough it and eat steaks and potatoes. It has been 15 years since we were last up that way so it is nice to see the changes. We stayed at the Prophet River Airstrip as well on our first journey in 2006. It hasn't changed a lick since then. My first trip up the Alcan much past Fort Liard was in 1996 with my Dad who was there when it opened 50 years earlier and my Grandad who followed us with his own VW Camper. He was 94 and followed us all the way to Inuvik. Lots of great stories from that journey.

Really enjoy following along on your adventure. We are seeing the effects of the fires here in Ontario. We have experienced a few hazy days and it has been on the cooler side as the heat from the sun can't filter through to heat up the ground. There are, now, also fires in BC and Saskachewan. They seem to start to get some of the fires under control and then more spring up. Thankfully you haven't experienced any of the flooding that has been occurring in BC. Continue to enjoy your trip and stay safe.

#12👍...........On the road again (and I didn't see that red light in the beginning 😉) and it was interesting yet again. I have had those times in my Class A when there are fires around and smoke everywhere, even if you are not that close to it. Hated it. Especially us asthmatics. But at least that didn't take away from those amazing views you had. Wow. Glad there were some wildlife along the way for you. But wait, did you or did you not take advantage of those hot springs? I hope you did even if you were camera shy lol. I would have wanted more privacy myself! But it was large enough to not have to be too close to others I guess. Looking forward to the next one!

Another great video guys! Thanks so much for sharing. Nice piece on Muncho Lake--amazing the ice is still as thick as it is. In the video of you driving down hill into the lake, it looked like there was a lot of RV traffic but you seemed to have had good luck with first come, first served campgrounds ... that were open. :)
Wonderful segment around Laird Hot Springs, especially the hanging gardens. And then the wonderful footage of the buffalo with the calves dancing! It's what traveling the Alaska Highway is all about!
    Safe travels!

      @bigtruckbigtravels  Рік тому +1

Thank you, Pete. The ice at Muncho was unexpected for May but then we had never been up here that early before so not sure of what to expect. I think a lot of the RV traffic were going to commercial parks because they knew a lot of the state/provincial parks weren't open until the May Long weekend in Canada. It's all good and part of the journey.

Are you going to drive the Dalton Highway when up here? It is a beautiful drive. Get a CB and talk to the truckers telling them you are slowing for them and try to give them the right of way on hills and bridges. I would always stop on top of a hill of before a bridge and tell them I’ll wait. I worked along it for 15 years and the job I had I drove on it a lot.

@@bigtruckbigtravels On the gravel portions of the Dalton usually the people that drive real fast get the flats. I remember being passed by someone doing about 70 mph and a few miles down the road they had a flat. I asked if they needed help and they said they had two spares so they were good. I saw them the next day with another flat and I stopped and they told me this was their 3 flat and didn’t have a spare. They wanted me to give them a ride to the Yukon River service station but it was against company policy. I told them I could call them as I could phone patches with the pipeline radio. They declined. I used to know about every pull off and would explore them. After work we would hike, fish and in the winter snowshoe. This was about 20 miles north of the Arctic Circle.

The temperature rose dramatically from like 50 F to 90 F in less than two weeks. Many small towns/reserves in my area are evacuated and taking shelter in our town. We have lots of smoke and ash in Central Alberta. You can't see 1/2 a mile. We are praying for rain.

I'm interested to follow your trip. I took the OLD military Alcan Hiway (all huge gravel) to Alaska in 1963. I don't recognise anything so far. AL

Wow! My hats off to you...that old road was a bear...this current route is really nice...except for Destruction Bay. Enjoy the journey.
