  • In this video I share my most important tips for applying to teach in Spain as an Auxiliar de Conversacion (Language Assistant in Spain) | BONUS TIPS are at the end so watch it ALL so you don’t miss anything!! (Minute 10:40)
    Check out below the Auxiliar De Conversation Spain VISA Manual Guide and double check the requirements for your state as they can be different from state to state!!
    Try to get these steps done ASAP (May/June) so you aren’t waiting till the last minute to get everything together and buy your ticket and go!!
    Try to get to Spain late August to mid-September to give yourself time to find a place, Apply for your TIE Card (Tarjeta de Identificacion Extranjera), and settle in. Mid-September is probably fine for people placed in smaller regions or cities outside of Madrid.

      @@LindseyDara actually yeah ! Do you know for how much of the process I have to give things in in person. Like document wise / have to visit the consultant?I was offered a small job in the uk for a few months starting about right after application opens in January. I’m not exactly sure if the process is different for a work visa which sounds like what you’re applying for. But typically you have to get all your documents together then go to your consulate in your own country and drop your documents off. At this point they typically take your passport and tell you how many days it takes to process your visa. For my visa at my consulate it was between two and four weeks. During that time I cannot travel abroad because they have my passport. The whole process must take place in your home country first. It cannot be completed abroad. Because you need to have your visa already in your passport before arriving to the new country.Then when to arrive in the new country, typically you need to do other work as well. Again I only have experience in Spain and with a student visa, but I can imagine if a student visa is this strict, it work visa is more strict. Go to your consulate website, click on the type of visa you’re applying for and see what information they tell you about it that will give you more insight into the process. I hope that this is somewhat helpful. Every country and consulate is a bit different. Good luck! 👍🏼

      When you go to your visa appointment, most consulates require you go in person, yes you take your passport with all you documents and visa application and you will give them your passport, and they will review everything and then put the visa in your passport which is basically a very official looking sticker that covers a whole page. Then they send it back to you or mail it back, typically within 2-4 weeks. Depends on the consulate and how busy they are.

    Thank you for these tips!!!! I'm a little less stressed about the process now :) Especially now that I have your friend's cheat sheet!
    Speaking of putting SIM cards in cell phones... do you have any tips cell phone tips? I'm still not sure if I should buy a new one in Spain or get one here and get it unlocked...

    • @LindseyDara
      @LindseyDara  7 років тому +1

      In fame I had a iPhone which I had unlocked (you have to have it paid off before they unlock it) and when you go to Spain you just pick the provider you want. There are many options Orange, Vodafone, and Movistar. Don't get too bogged down over plans. I think I paid €20 euros for sim and got data with that. Maybe ask someone from your school for help. Hopefully they will be helpful. But just try to bring an unlocked phone. That's what I've always done. Now I heard that Verizon or T-Mobile (can't Remember which one...) one of them has good international plans. So you could keep your number and not unlock if you get one of those plans. Now I know ATT does not have good international plans and will rip you off. I have ATT and it is ridiculous the price for the little data they give you. However, I do get one of their data plans to cover me for the first week or so until I get the SIM card. Also, you must take your passport with you if you decide to get a sim card in Spain. When you go to the providers store, ok!

      In fame what company do you have? If you have ATT.... you can pay the phone off anytime and unlock it, and then put your phone line like on hold.... i think its like $10 a month while your gone, but I'm honestly not 100% sure if that's the best option. Maybe go to a store and ask them? Or unlock an older phone and take it. I actually took two... my 5c phone as a back up, since there is A LOT of phone theft in Spain, especially in Madrid/Barcelona!

      Lindsey LaVida I'm in Canada and I'm with a local company, so I'll have to go in person and see. I heard that you can put your plan on hold for 10$ a month, for a max of six months, which isn't too bad - if it's true! I'm definitely worried about phone theft, which is why I'm thinking about paying off my phone and upgrading, then bringing my current phone with me so it won't be a disaster if it's stolen.

Will it be alright for me to apply for my California background check from Alaska? What about everything else? I know that I can mail in my actual visa application and documents. I'm just not sure about everything else I'd need to get done before applying for the visa.

    • @LindseyDara
      @LindseyDara  7 років тому +1

      DoggieAngel12345 yes I think you can do back ground check from Alaska, just make sure they mail it to your Alaska address, so you can mail it later to get the Apostille. Are you sure you can send your Visa Application? Just checking because most consulates you have to go in person. But just double check on that. Otherwise you should be fine... If you're going to Madrid, you'll want to get there as soon as possible in September cause the apartment search is hard in September but other cities you should be fine in mid September.

    Great video Lindsay! Question: I'm currently traveling in Romania but want to apply this January. You think I'd be able to get the Visa in a Spain consulate here in Romania?

    • @LindseyDara
      @LindseyDara  5 років тому +1

      Good question, but for this visa you will definitely have to apply or send it to your consulate in the US, which means you will have to do it from the US. Depending on which state you live in, Some allow you to send it in from home and others require you to make an appointment to drop it off in person and well you will have to wait till you get it back to travel abroad. Typically the process occurs between June and August and some consulates are slow and some faster. So if you’re abroad now, you have till probably around May/June to return to do all the paperwork and get stuff in order. If you pick a smaller region like La Rioja or really anywhere besides Madrid region, you’re more likely to get your placement faster. Madrid sends their placements out like in July and delays your move till end August/September. If you want to spend the least amount of time in the US, pick a smaller region, pick a date to have your appointment like around mid-June or early July. Hopefully you get the visa/passport back and can be on your way by August if you plan to travel before you start. Also, you’ll want to plan a doctor physical sometime in May/June as well before your visa appointment. Thanks for watching!

    Here is my situation:
    I was hired as an Au pair for a family in Spain through Scotia Personnel, Ltd. I have recieved my acceptance letter to work from July 3rd through September 15, 2017. I plan to depart Houston, TX on June 25th. However, my arrival date is flexible.
    I was admitted by the Ministry of Education, but have NOT received my authorization letter.
    I understand I can apply for my work visa no earlier than 90 days before the start of the program, which would be July 4th. Is this flexible?
    I also believe my passport will be kept when applying for my work visa, and obviously need my passport to travel to Spain.
    I have not purchased my flight until I know when and where I can get my visa.
    Would I be able to apply for a visa once I arrive in Spain? If not, how can apply for my long term work visa if I have not received my letter of authorization from the Ministry of Education? Id appreciate any advice or information. THANKS!

    • @LindseyDara
      @LindseyDara  7 років тому +1

      Jessika Perez hi Jessica! Thanks for watching and good question! There may be another way, but I think you might have to skip the Au Pair This summer, next summer could be possible. You do have to wait for the letter which will come depending on your inscrita number. Last year I was 2405 and received my letter by email in mid July for Madrid. Madrid tends to email their letters out later than other provinces. Also, you must apply for the Visa here in the US. Have you made your visa appointment with your consulate? If not, go online and find out how to do that ASAP ok. You can apply for your visa in June if you get your letter in time, but maybe make it for first week of July just to play it safe. Also, make sure you have your background check and the apostille also in the works. You really have to get good at juggling responsibilities lol. So anyway, once you get the background check with the apostille and your letter and you made your appointment. On that day you will go, most consulates you must go in person. Double check yours, it will say online or you can call. When you go to the consulate you will take all the documents and copies and passport and leave them with the consulate. Then the consulate will mail your passport back with the special Visa attached inside your passport page. This could take a few weeks to a month and yes you will be without a passport at this time. Hopefully your passport will come back sometime in August, then buy your flight to Spain. If you're going to Madrid, try to get their by first week of September to look for apartments and apply for ID card. If you're going to a smaller region, if you arrive by the 15th you should be fine. So yes, if you really want to do the ministry program more than au pair, then yes, you'll have to pass on the au pair. I know that isn't the best news, but you can call your consulate or the Spanish embassy to see if there are other options. But I don't know anyone who has applied in Spain for the program. But if I were you, I'd get a summer job and save as much money as you can because you will need it in Spain. You will make much more money here than au pair. And don't worry! The time will come soon enough and you'll be on your way!!

From my knowledge, you will need to apply for your visa at your states consulate. You sometimes must go in person and drop off your passport for a few weeks and then they mail it back to you in 2-4 weeks normally. If you are living abroad you may be able to apply for this in an embassy abroad, if you are just traveling abroad without a visa, I think you must return to your consulate to apply. This is what I’ve heard, but try asking in the group for more specific info, as this info can change at any time. Thanks for watching!

      Right, so basically any generic job, Americans can’t apply for a job unfortunately. But really your only option is teaching English since that job typically requires a native speaker. There are many special programs for Americans to teach English in Spain. I have several videos on the different programs, check out the 10 ways to teach in Spain video. Anyway, the main program I always recommend is the Auxiliares de Conversación. However the only downside is you have almost no control of where they will assign you. But it’s really the only way to work in spain legally. Actually it’s not even considered work. It’s considered studying and you will only get a student visa, but it’s all you need. I think once you’ve been there for a bit of time you can apply for a “pareja de hecho” visa. Which means you live with your girlfriend and therefore qualify for a visa and you can work at that point. I don’t know much about the “pareja de hecho” (civil unión visa) visa. But check out the spain guru site and search for it. You will find more info there, and I believe there is a spain guru Facebook group as well.

    • @LindseyDara
      @LindseyDara  5 років тому

      John Smith you’re not alone, many people assume the process is as simple as filling out a form, turning it in and voila, here’s your visa. If you are applying to a language assistant program, it’s a long drawn out complicated process that starts at you state’s consulate before doing any traveling. On the program’s website it explains in detail the process for getting the proper visa before arriving to Spain. Which is basically what I am outlining in this video. Anyone planning to stay in Spain longer than 90 days for studying or work must get a visa before arriving to Spain, that includes being an English assistant. After arriving the complicated process continues. Each city has a visa processing centers called “foreigners’ office”. You will go there and basically show them your visa and they will give you an application to fill out to apply for a long term stay ID card (called TIE). Kinda like a drivers license in the US. So within a month or so later, you will get your ID card and it will be good for 9 months or 10 months, however long your program is. You carry that around as your ID instead of your passport. The school doesn’t help at all with the visa. You are on your own, but there are many Facebook groups where people work together to make sure they do it right. But if you follow your programs visa directions and your consulates, you will be fine. Once you arrive to Spain, you will have an orientation to give your more info on applying for your international ID card. So no, the school doesn’t place much of a role in helping you with the visa. It’s each person’s individual responsibility. (However, maybe you’re confusing this teaching assistant program for teaching full time at an international school? If you want to teach at an American international school and you’re a certified teacher. Then yes, the school may help you more, but still the process starts in the US, before leaving.)

    Hey Lindsey, I'm looking into doing this program, but I have a question: Is there a certain amount of money you need to have in your bank account before you apply to the visa for this program? I know some countries require bank statements to prove you have enough money to support yourself (this was the case when I studied abroad in the U.K.). You didn't really talk about this in the video so I'm just curious. I don't see anything on the Spanish consulate website either. I'm thinking of working for a few months to save up about $4000 before actually applying to this since I'm graduating college in like 3 weeks and don't have a lot of money at the moment. Thanks!

      Elizabeth Beltran hi! No you do not need to prove you have any certain amount of money because they pay you a stipend to cover living expenses usually between 700-1000 euros depending on the city. However the application period has ended. CIEE teach in Spain And ConversaSpain are open till May 31st, but there is a big fee for those programs. They’d probably let you apply late if you emailed them. Feel free to join my Facebook group for more info “Teach in Spain - All programs...” that’s the name of the group ok!

      Hmm might depend on the type of visa you currently have, perhaps contact the American embassy or consulate near you.
