All to often items like this just get thrown away, when in fact, as we have just witnessed here, they can live to fight another day with a bit of resourcefulness. Top job Ryan.
I agree . honestly its an odd looking cleaver and I wasn't sure about it but with a little work I really like it. Seeing that its hand made now I really wish I knew how old it is , who made it , and where they made it . Thanks David !!
Beautiful restoration ! The grain on the wooden handle is gorgeous !! You not only gave it a new life , but preserved the dignity and strength of its old life ! Another fine Whipple project ! Thank you for sharing !!
Lovely work restoring this old Cleaver and it's handle ( love the grain in the new handle look's superb . Your very talented in everything you do. watching from London, Ontario, Canada A very Happy New Year to you and family
Hello from Mn. I love the work you put into this project, I love to do the same with tools I come across... Say hi to the rest of the family and I hope you have a great new year!!!
Wow. It is a pleasure to get a response for the author... I have been following you and your brother and Brook and Nick... At 58 I'm trying to get there... .. thank you I would love to share some time with any of you... Thanks Dave
I found one just like it along with a 12 inch Griswold cast iron skillet at a yard sale about 20 years ago. Paid $5.00 for both. The Griswold is worth about $500 now, and I use both almost every day.😁There's plenty of metal there if you want to try getting some of the worst pitting out, but as long as it holds an edge you're good to go. The handle came out great. Was that tung oil? And don't let anyone tell you cleavers don't need a decent edge.
Thats an awesome find !! I kept the pitting to keep that antique look . thanks !! yup I like tongue oil it seems to hold up well and doesn't have a horrible odor . yeah I saw that comment too what do they think you just smash the meat in half ?
Looks Fantastic. 2 questions. Why not a broomstick handle with a screw on pommel??? Why put an edge on a cleaver?? Cleaver is made thick at the top thin on the bottom for a reason.
Thanks !! I like a bit of a curve to my handles, just feels better to me . once I had re profiled the blade to get that broken end out it was better than a 16th inch thick still needs to be sharp
Happy New Year to you and your family from Wayland, MI. Ryan you have some serious skills and one very cool shop! Can I ask what trade you are in for your primary work?
Looks really nice, you did a good job! Its shame the original wood couldn't be saved, but the new handle is so pretty! How long did it take to do all that?
Thank you !! the old wood was pretty much junk . Thanks and it has a much more comfy shape to it . I would guess without the time waiting for the vinegar to remove the rust and the glue to dry maybe 6 -8 hours

happy new year John ! Thanks ! I spent around 16 years building electrical substations
Isn't there anything you can't do? Really nicely done. Where did you lind it?
there's lots of thing . thanks !! I found it at an antique store in a bin of stuff that wasn't worth a display .
Really nice job! Do you make knives? I make them as a hobby and find it very enjoyable.
Thanks !! Yeah I’ve sold a few but mostly make them when I feel like it . I agree I really enjoy it too
Restaurada cutelo 🔪😉
Obrigado!!
Excellent work. Is that handle made from spalted sugar maple?
Thanks !! yes it is

Would love that. Can I buy it ?
I don’t know. I kinda want to keep it . Thanks though
Since there wasn't any markings of who made it or when, you should stamp a restoration date on it.
That's a cool idea !!
Is there a blacksmith forge in your future?
Lol , I don't know where I would put it if there was . I'm running out of room
Ryan, you need some steaks for that cleaver.
I can't disagree with that !
❤️🇺🇸💙
thanks!!!
neat but could use more commentary about what you doing.
yeah I was going for just a relaxing video but I think you're right I probably could have put some voice over in it
It was relaxing to watch. if that was a goal then you succeeded. @@blackspruce1861
Hello 😢😢
HI :)
Why destroy the original handle?
It was cracked All the way through and had open spots through it . Not worth saving
It was cracked all the way through and had missing pieces . It was junk
