I just did the same comparison but on 3.5 inch 7200 RPM HDD and I tested Enthusia Professional Racing with this HDD and the game loads so fast it gives off disc skip error glitch when it reads something while playing music and FMV. I mean on disc it the loading was good around 15-20 second to load a race but on this HDD it's down to a second or two,PS5 SSD experience on PS2 games lol.
@chayil coupe It won't crash the game at least for this game but I can tell that the game code weren't designed for such fast reads and during the race I can see the game frame judder quite a bit while that didn't happened on original disc. on OPL I would turn on the compatibility Mode 1 just to limit the read speed but then you would lose that insanely fast load times but in return the game would be less buggy when it loads something on the fly. But weirdly this Mode 1 also caused issue on game that required a lot of loading on the fly like open world racer Test Drive Unlimited for example will eventually failed to load the map in time and you will fall off the map and game crashed shortly afterward. So I turn Mode 1 off and it plays fine since no more fall off the map 'n crash.
I dunno man; I have the 18000 phat model and it is damn slow. Maybe it has something to do with the way you process the game files or just the model of your system
If you have a choice,NEVER use USB method to play PS2 games it's very hit and miss and compatibility is low and if your USB flash drive were on its way out or it got the game data fragmented then it became black screen fest and you have to re format the thing and reinstall everything over and over which sucks ass I'd rather play on real discs when USB drive mess it up that often. Then you have very slow loading,skip or stuttered FMVs and game that randomly stops working due to USB drive clouldn't keep up with seek requirement. I only use USB flash drive for PS1 game which still have its issues and some slowdowns but much better than PS2 games. I mean HDD play are not perfect as well but the compatibility are much higher but if you sick worry about certain games not working then it's better to just play that game on disc.
Backup discs 4 life specially that freedvdboot exist now where u buy stock ps2 slim with no modchips to it u can still play games like a champ My recomindations are use verrrry cheap imation dvd+r and make sure u patch with the iso in freedvdboot then use ultra iso at 8x your game would run like a charm even if the disc still has little scratches unless they are not some of those deep ones u know what i mean then cutscenes and loadings are incredible but again ultra iso it does the job better then imburn which sucks a lot 😂😂😂
From my experience, everything runs fine and dandy on the USB, minus the often-choppy FMVs. Aside that, its a perfect solution to play backups on the go.
Dang. I booted gta vcs with usb and the loading screen didnt seem that bad compared to a disc. I did hear that the bigger the device the slower it ran though and I use a 16 gig stick.
That's not the problem, PS2 only has USB 1.1 so that's why loading games from USB is so slow. It's better to use an HDD or load the games from a PC using an Ethernet cable.
I just tested the same thing too with Vice City. The USB compared to the actual disc (perfect shape) was only about 12 seconds slower on that first big loading screen. USB isn't horrible. No network adapters to buy and it's easier to add games as you rip them with the USB thumb drive so easy to access. And it's dirt cheap to do.

I've played a lot on usb ps2 loading times is the only issue I found there might be few compatibility issues in some games but majority runs but usb is the slowest method to play games when loading sighn appears its take v long to boot i personally find that issue only but in hdd obviously it's extremely fast and instant i went on to switch to hdd and built a ps2 library
Usb is mostly a problem in the cutscenes. Games, like gt4 that I play a lot, work flawlessly in-game. But, gta san andreas has limitations and lags even in game when a lot of stuff is happening on screen

You should buy a PS2 FAT and a HDD adaptor to use a HDD. Loading times are 30-60% faster on an HDD compated to a DVD (depends on games of course) so it's really worth it. But of the PS2 slim, you simply can't use the advantages of an HDD because you can only connect it trought USB which is very slow. If you buy a PS2 Slim I think you should buy a SPCH-9004 or higher model because it can run freemc boot, and it is a better construction than the previous slim models. Or If you choose the PS2 FAT I suggest the SCPH-5xxxx model because it's fan is quieter than the SPCH-3xxx ones.
My PS2 is unmodified, the pendrive is used is usb 2.0 and PS2 has usb 1.0 by default. Jak and Daxter and Crash cutscenes are running fine with it, but Ratchet and Clanks pre-rendered cutscenes are slowed down.

Hello, it seems the fmcb memory card that you got always boot to the OPL menu. I would fix this by starting the console without the memory card, and when the normal PS2 bios come up, insert it again then delete OPL from the memory card. Then you can install a new one and configure fmcb to not start any app automatically when you start your console. OR Wipe the whole memory card and install a new freemcboot and opl with the help of freedvdboot (it works on all consoles, and you just need a burnable DVD.

Usb is good in game, but things may longer to load in game depending on what you play if it has to load something.
