- (19 Feb 1945) Pictures of Field-Marshal Montgomery's advance to Cleve have now reached London. Germany was entering the Reichswald Forest area and the enemy pushed back in a determined action. The capture of Cleve marked the end of phase one of Monty's push.

Even back in 1945 the town was called Kleve. The name was subject to the National Socialist Party’s grammatical correction program which took place in 1936.
It should be pronounced Klefer. V is pronounced as F in the German language.
It is associated with Anne of Cleve her Father was the Lord of the region, however she was born in 1515 in Düsseldorf and grew up with her wealthy Mother in Schloss Burg on the outskirts of Solingen about 100km from Kleve.😊

And there in the first few seconds of the clip are the Kangaroos developed by Canada as probably the first armoured personnel carriers. Essentially a Sherman with it's turret and basket removed, climbing rungs on the sides to enable it to load quickly and carry a group of infantry within it's hull protected from small arms, heavy machine gun and some artillery fire. They performed brilliantly.

My dad was shot in the Reichswald Forest in 16 February 45, he was part of the 7th Seaforth Highlanders, which was part of Op VERITABLE.
Lawrence mcintosh My grandad was shot on the exact same day and I presume in that same place. He was part of the 5th Dorsetshire Regiment.
My Grandad was in the 9th Seaforth, he was killed in the Reichswald on March 23, 1945.
My Grandfather made it through the Reichswald, but hit a mine near Cleve. He survived. I made the trip over this Summer. Stayed in Groesbeck.

My dad was an officer in the 43rd Recce and shot in February 45 (exact day unknown) near Cleves, in the Reichswald, when a German round took off the top of his left thumb and hit him in the chest. A cigarette case deflected and shattered that bullet and sent the shrapnel into his legs.

Non sense you can say what you want about his personality but you can't deny his ability as an organiser and planner. There were constraints on the British empire forces that the Americans didn't have which informed some of his choices .

But the failure of Market-Garden was: 1) Ike pushing; 2) Monty believing, like everyone else, that Germany in the West was finished. Monty “learned the lesson;” Bradley, who surely knew of the operation would make the same “Germany’s finished” mistake twice. Bradley sacrificed men in the Huertgenwald, and then in the Ardennes, all because the Germans were “finished.” Mark Clark in Italy was of the same “they’re finished” mentality, and consequently wasted men. Monty’s operations after Market-Garden were well planned and well executed. Whilst Cleve was a “meat grinder,” British and Commonwealth forces won. Huertgen Forest was a meat grinder, and the US lost.
