    A moment of silence for the the Rialto Boxset, could of stayed in the seal but for our sakes, the sacrifice has been made.

    Another amazing creation! You are a stickler for details, my friend. After watching the entire video, my only constructive feedback is that there were a few too many apologies. No need to ever apologize to the viewer. The fact that you made this painstaking video requires no apology at all. I'm going to work my way through your channel and I really enjoy the videos. Your collection is unsurpassed!

    I would really, really, REALLY love for Criterion to re-release the Rebel Samurai box set in high definition. If my memory serves me correctly, that was the second Criterion purchase I made, and it still gets a lot of use. Each one of those films in that set are excellent pieces of Samurai cinema. I was absolutely elated when Criterion decided to re-release the Samurai Trilogy a few years ago on Blu-ray, as that was the third or fourth Criterion purchase I ever made. New 2k or 4k scans of those four films in the Rebel Samurai box would make me one happy collector. I'd also like a high definition re-release of Olivier's Hamlet, which I think would look STUNNING. Great video, my friend. Thank you so much for taking the time to make them!

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  6 років тому +1

      I am so intrigued to hear about your love of the REBEL SAMURAI SET and the SAMURAI TRILOGY! This is interesting. I admit that these films are good to me, but not great. But, I have not seen them in such a long time... and you have inspired me again, as you always do. I will look at them later this week! Thank you so much for making me re-think about my opinions! This is exactly why I started these UA-cam videos!!!!

    • @stevevincentfurness4537
      @stevevincentfurness4537 6 років тому +1

      Glad that I could inspire you to view them again, as you have inspired me to continue making UA-cam videos! My love of Samurai cinema goes back pretty far, back when I rented Seven Samurai at a small video store when I was in middle school. It ruined me, both in terms of a new-found love for Akira Kurosawa (even though Ikiru is my definitive favorite of his work -- I can't begin to express how that film touches me, every damn time I watch it) -- and it also ignited a passion for seeing every Samurai movie I could find. When I saw the Rebel Samurai box in the video store, there wasn't a question: I HAD to have it. There are many good memories surrounding those films and I admit that there are much better to be found... but they all hit the right kind of notes for me.

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  6 років тому

      I had a similar experience watching Seven Samurai. I saw it on a beautiful print that was shown at my university's film society. It was an amazing experience and the crowd was really into the film. I had seen the film many times before but never on 35mm like this. It was one of the best film watching experiences of my life.

      There is a UK Blu-ray of Oliver's Hamlet from the company ITV DVD: www.blu-ray.com/movies/Hamlet-Blu-ray/6628/
      Reviews indicate it is a decent release, and very cheap at only 10 pounds. Region B locked. But I am sure Criterion would do a much better job if they could get the rights again.

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  6 років тому

      Wow! This is very interesting!
      So, yes, as far as I am aware, Criterion still has the rights to HAMLET, but the Criterion release is a fairly old release of a DVD, which has not yet been upgraded as far as I can recall. So, the blu ray that you mention seems to be a good alternative to the Criterion DVD (maybe even better??).

    Wow that Janus films boxset is a behemoth! It would be a great introduction to someone who has never seen a non- English language film. Congrats on not being squashed by it. Your presentation skills are absolutely fine. I’m so jealous of that Kurosawa boxset. Absolutely beautiful

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  6 років тому +1

      Thank you so much! Yes, that AK boxset is lovely... but I would preferred to have also had MADAYAYO broken out of the box and also have been made available as an individual release. But oh well.
      Have you seen MADADAYO? I admit to not liking it that much (even though I do not hate the film at all), but as a drama comedy film it is in many ways a radical departure for Kurosawa especially when we think about his late period; in that way I really admire the film.

    7:10 Great subject for a video. Thanks for noting the anomaly about the design of the box of the Bergman set not matching the design of the contained DVDs. That set was released in December 2007, well over a year after the "wacky C" design was implemented. So it's not unusual that it carries that design, even though the four films that it contained carried the line design. All of them were either the first or later printings of the titles, and none of them had yet to be reissued with the new design.

      the film Murderous Maids is based on a true story of the Papin sisters, who were French maids in the early 20th century. I think the actual events that are the basis of the film are in the 1930s.
      Here is a link to the wikipedia article about the sisters, which hopefully can lead you to more resources if you are interested!

    What a fantastic collection Deisuke. I absolutely love the Janus collection box set, it’s beautiful. Somewhere in my subconscious I’m sure there was a huge Merchant Ivory box? But maybe it was not Criterion or Janus Films? Forgive me if I’m wrong though. Speaking of Merchant Ivory, so many of those films now OOP. It’s time a lot of them were given the Blu Ray treatment I think. Anyway, thank you again for a look at your wonderful collection. Take care for now.

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  6 років тому +1

      Thank you so much for watching this video also! Wow, this is such an honor.
      I am not sure if there was ever a huge Merchant Ivory box released by Criterion, etc. However, I think there was this: www.amazon.com/Merchant-Collection-Householder-Shakespeare-Wallah-Hullabaloo/dp/B008U0XMXY
      Is this what you are thinking of perhaps?
      And yes, unfortunately, all the title that were released on these Criterion DVDs are all OOP, and the only title that is part of the regular CC collection that is still in print is I think A ROOM WITH A VIEW.
      I agree completely with you... it would be great to see all these back into the collection again. They are all really gorgeous and lovely and so filled with emotion and happiness and sadness and everything.
      Thank you so much!

      Thank you for your reply. I think that must be the Merchant Ivory box set I was thinking of. Yet another amazing collection. I’m fortunate enough to have the Blu Rays of A Room With a View and the now OOP Howard’s End. Both beautiful films and personal favourites of mine.

      I must say that in particular HOWARDS END (both the novel and the film) is one of my favorites. I have seen this film so many times and I often walk my dog while listening to the soundtrack (the track that is played when Leonard Bast is walking towards the house Howards End).

    I have many of these without the box which is sort of a drag because criterion just labels each of the DVDs with a spine #. That makes it difficult for collectors to seek the box because they dont know about it. i didnt realize until watching this video that I am missing these from my collection and I've been collecting for 11 years. I.e: Olivier's Shakespeare, The Rock Box, Bergman 4 Masterworks, Akira Kurosawa 4 Samurai Classics, etc.

    Yet another great video and your intros and endings continue to get more classy. I was going to ask how much that 50 Years of Janus Films monster collection cost you but I found it on Amazon for over $500! It looks like a film course all in itself! Keep up the good work.

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  6 років тому

      Thank you so much monsterfan! This is so nice of you! Yes, the large 50 Years set was expensive but I don’t remember having to pay 500 bucks for it, and I bought mine new. Still it is an expensive item and thus it is not necessarily an item that one must have, since most of its titles appear in separate releases. But it is a great set to have all the same 😃

    Love the Janus set. What is the relationship between Janus Films and Criterion exactly? Is Janus the restoration wing?

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  4 роки тому

      Thank you so much.
      Janus Films was and is the distributor of the films in the US market, and then it partnered with Criterion so that Criterion would release certain films on home media.

  • @DungeonStudio
    @DungeonStudio 6 років тому +1

    Great expose! Now the big question is did Criterion release the unnumbered sets as a sort of 'economy pack' to lessen the prices? I bought The Beales... separately, and when I came across the box it was more expensive than the two, with nothing extra other than the box. When America Lost And Found was released, I had to have it regardless, and didn't even know it didn't have a spine #. 10 Years Of Rialto, what a treat that would be to have, and thanks so much for opening it as well! Aside from the covers, are the discs any different from their stand alones?

    • @DaisukeBeppu

    • @DungeonStudio

    Why is it that you do not have the original boxes within the case? I, curious as to why you use ‘filler’ instead?

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  10 місяців тому +1

      Thank you for your question. It is a good one. So the boxes often contain titles that I would have separately on the shelf (for example the box set may have individual spine numbered titles, so I would take out the individual titles and arrange them in spine number order). But I still like to keep the boxes themselves with filler in order to make them easier to store or easier to put on shelves (it is easier practically for me to store boxes that are filled rather than boxes that are not filled because filled boxes retain their shape over time).
      I understand if others may have different methods or preferences but this works for me.

      @DaisukeBeppu  4 роки тому +2
