  • This is a movie reaction to my first time watching Galaxy Quest, released in 1999 and directed by Dean Parisot. I have never watched any Star Trek before, but I still giggled SO much during this movie! Should I get into Star Trek now? 👀 Alan Rickman shines in this movie and may he rest in peace. Make sure to stick around to the end of this video for my full thoughts and review and thank you so much for watching!

My absolute favorite behind the scenes story on this one is that after filming the scene where Taggart admits he's a fraud Tim Allen was really shaken up. "I don't like these feelings I'm having, I'd like to go back to my trailer." After he leaves Alan Rickman quips "Oh my god, I think he just experienced acting." 🤣🤣🤣

I like that the Thermians are a parody of ultimate nerd fandom. While IRL, of course fans don't actually believe Star Trek is real, they do act and talk about the show as if it was real, and in a sense they make it real with cosplay costumes, learning fictional languages and making home-made props, much like the Thermians go to extreme lengths to bring the show to physical reality.

What I love most about Galaxy Quest is that although it is poking fun at "Star Trek" (and more the show's position in popular culture than at specifics of the show itself, which is why you don't need to see it to find it funny), it is also a sincere science fiction film with genuine dramatic moments. It's one thing to riff on something, it's another to also do that thing while you're riffing on it.

Galaxy Quest is a terrific movie! Kaiiele, there are some things in Galaxy Quest that makes fun of Star Trek that you might have missed. Some of the actors on the original Star Trek DID have a resentment towards William Shatner, and felt he was a prima donna. As Captain Kirk, Shatner did a lot of those somersault rolls from one boulder to another, and a lot of times he got his shirt either partially ripped off or completely ripped off.

Thanks for the upload! A few fun facts...
    1. When they first transported aboard the ship, Sigourney Weaver's reaction was real. She wasn't expecting Sam Rockwell's scream and she was genuinely, startled.
    2. The film was originally cut to be PG-13, but the studio insisted that they cut it to PG. That explains a lot of things... First, Tech Sergeant Chen is clearly high, but the drug use was cut leaving him just sort of acting weird and having the munchies all the time. Second, when they approach the "chompers" Sigourney Weaver clearly says, "Well, fuck that!" Since they didn't have an alternate take, they just had to use the same take and dub over it, "Well, screw that!"

#2 - OMG...I always thought given his name and the way he was always 'squinting' when the camera hit him that he was...ummm..."playing asian". if he was high in the original cut of the movie that then explains his nonchalant reactions to things that should elicit extreme emotions. Both could be true though. #mindblown

It is a parody but also a deeply wholesome love letter to Star Trek fans. The director with costume designers knew that the costuming had to go hard and really sell the idea that the Sarris was an alien plucked out of the Star Trek universe (probably influenced by the reptilian Xindi with the war culture of the Klingons and the Star Trek limitations that a lot of the aliens were humanoid). It is real within the parody and faithfully true to the show.
Sir Patrick Stewart was weary of even watching this movie because he didn't want to come across as supporting a story that may make fun of the nerds who love Star Trek. He knew that his character Captain Picard meant so much to said nerds, who like the Thermians, might have not quite accepted the separation between actor and character. He feared it might betray that trust of the fans. However, he was eventually convinced to see it and he was greatly relieved that his fears were misplaced. Tim Allen's Jason Nesmith was more based on William Shatner's Captain Kirk.

I guess you can also watch the J.J. Abrams Star Trek movies, but in good honest, those feels more like Star Wars in a different costume than real Star Trek.....

Fun Fact: Fred is always so chill with everything because he was originally written in as a stoner…. errr. Pothead. Although they removed any scenes or dialog that actually referenced the drug. But you still get to see the resulting munchies, giggles and laid back attitude. Ive always been a Star Trek fan from back in the late 70’s and I adored this movie. It was a parody that didn’t really make fun if the original. I think it was tastefully done maintaining that respect for a a legendary show.

Another Fred fact: Tony Shaloub plays an asian actor (Fred Quan) playing an asian crewman (Tech Sergeant Chen) but he isn't asian. So he has trained himself to squint during dramatic moments when the camera is on him. We see this in the first scene, when the old series is being shown, as well as when Mathezar first meets him. A couple of fun facts related to the "Thermians from the Klattu Nubula":
    1) A Theremin is an old electronic musical instrument often used to produce odd sounds in 1950s sci fi movies. One was also used in the Beach Boys song Good Vibrations.
    2) Klattu was the name of the alien who came to earth in the sci-fi movie The Day The Earth Stood Still. This was one of the top science fiction films ever. Michael Rennie played Klattu in the original film, and Keanu Reeves played him in a somewhat less successful 2008 remake.

If you enjoy behind the scenes stories, it is well worth your time. For another Alan Rickman film, if you can find a way to watch Dogma, it is very enjoyable. It is difficult to find these days because the rights are apparently in dispute (luckily I have it on DVD), so very few people react to it.

You just made my day. I saw this in the movie and the movie's aspect ratio did indeed change 3 times in it. The original Tv show in 4x3, then the middle in 1.85/1, and then, when the black hole is revealed, it opened up to a full 2.35/1. Great film; great react. Subscribed.

Well kaiielle, this movie has been reacted to death, but you did a credible job. One thing that I noticed is that the instruments carried by the Thermians when they showed up without their appearance generators included something that might have been a speculum. And something noted elsewhere, Commander Taggart referred to Guy as "Fleegman" one time when they were on the planet to steal a beryllum sphere. Meaning that Guy actually had a last name.

"Galaxy Quest": The best "Star Trek" movie that Paramount didn't make. (I wonder what "Weird Al" Yankovic thought of this movie?) Useless trivia: Sigourney Weaver liked her "Lt. Tawny Madison" blonde wig so much that she wore it off set...all the way home.;) I've suspected that there is a direct line between "Galaxy Quest" and "The Orville." Justin Long's first major movie role.

The story behind Gwen's shirt being opened: there was a deleted scene (that, in my honest opinion, wasn't even that bad) where she tried distracting Sarris's men and she opened her shirt before ordering the computer to liquidfy them. It didn't add to the story, sure, but it did explain why her shirt was open for the remainder of the movie.

Is he even wearing underwear? Part of Tim Allen's routine when he was doing stand up was the view a husband gets when behind his wife bending forward and the view the wife gets of her husband.

As somebody who's old enough to remember watching the *original* Star Trek when it was *originally aired* (when I got the chance to talk my Mom into letting me watch "that *silly* show!") ... you won't get the same 'background feel' by watching the S.T. movies, even the first few, that used the original cast.
S.T.-T.O.S. (The Original Series) was very different; example: in TOS, it became a sort of joke how often Captain Kirk ended up shirtless/semi-shirtless (from it getting ripped-up in a fight, or changing tops in his cabin, or an explosion shreds it, or he's captured and has to wear a leather harness, or ... whatever), so when Alexander says "I see you managed to get your shirt off!" - every Trekker/Trekkie (there absolutely is a difference) chuckled at the line! Also, when Gwen remarks on how often the Commander "... slept with _every_ ..." - that echoes how often Kirk somehow managed to *at least* end up lip-locked with so many characters on the show! (It really was a bit ridiculous!) [A bit of Hollywood-TV historical trivia: Star Trek was the first TV show to have an inter-racial kiss on-camera.]
By the time they started making the movies they'd decided, apparently, to go a bit lighter on some of that stuff; although some said it altered the 'feel' of the movies, compared to the TV series.
You can, I believe, catch many/most of TOS on YT, if you're interested. Just watching 6 or 7 episodes (the 1st two seasons are considered the best; many folks who aren't real Trekkers/Trekkies don't realize that 'Ensign Chekhov' wasn't in the 1st season) will give you a feel for the show.
    *Enjoy!*

While this is a "spoof" of Star Trek, this movie still manages to capture the "spirit" of Star Trek perfectly. I think that is why this movie has the following it does. The people who made this really showed that they understand what Star Trek is really about and they love it too. This is their love letter. It's ultimately about hope for the future when you choose to see that you could do better today to get to that future. All the "actors" learn valuable lessons that they will take with them, and we're left with the impression that life will be different and better for them for it going forward.

In your quick review at the end, you basically say that it went pretty much as you expected and you were fine with it... although that's all well and good, it's a pity, because one of the characteristics of Galaxy Quest is that it exceeds expectations, which is why it is so loved! It's not just a spoof, it's a multilayered llove letter to fandom (let's not forget it's more than twenty years old) AND to acting, filled with surprising dramatic moments. Everything about it is awesome. When it's not hilarious, it's delightful.

I think having watched Star Trek only provides a few Easter eggs (some of which you may have more or less gotten anyway, just by exposure to pop culture). Some of the best references are more about fandom history, stories about how certain actors were on set, how certain actors got along with each other, actors' and writers' reputations, etc. etc., for which it's hard to replace being a long-time fan immersed in the fan culture. Apparently, some Star Trek actors watched this movie and absolutely loved it to death. As much as it pokes fun at it, it's also a love letter to the franchise, and it really captures the good, the bad, and the ugly of it.

  • @JustWasted3HoursHere
    @JustWasted3HoursHere Рік тому

This movie spoofs sci-fi in general, but especially Star Trek, but never in a mean spirited way. In fact it is almost universally loved by Trekkies who have seen it. Years ago at a Star Trek convention people were asked to rank their favorite "Star Trek" movies. Believe it or not, this one made it to number 4 even though it's not actually a Star Trek movie! Jonathan Frakes, who plays Commander William T Riker on Star Trek The Next Generation called his friend Patrick Stewart (who plays Captain Picard on that same show) and asked him if he had seen this movie yet. Patrick said no and that he wasn't really interested, but Frakes told him, "No, you MUST go see this. It's great!" so they went to see it together and Patrick loved it. It's too bad they waited too long to do a sequel and Alan has died, but at least we have this fond memory.

Thank you, Kaiielle. This is a fun movie. I started as a Star Trek fan. I loved the original series when it came out. I was never in to the conventions, although I did go to one when I was in high school. It was okay. The highlight was getting to hear Gene Roddenberry, the creator of Star Trek, give a talk. This movie pokes a lot of fun at fandom in general, and Star Trek fans, in particular. This movie is a fun 'fish-out-of-water' story, as well as a 'what-if-it-were-real' fantasy. It was fun. I also loved Alan Rickman. I miss him, too. But, more so for his role in Die Hard, which was the first thing I saw him in. (He's also pretty good in Quigley Down Under, which I highly recommend.) Should you decide to watch Die Hard, there are a lot of other movies in the franchise. The 2nd one is not great, the 3rd one is not bad, the 4th one actually has Justin Long in it, and it's my 2nd favorite of the franchise after the first movie, although... I find I rewatch the 4th one more often, because it's a lot of fun, a little easier to watch, and the interaction between Bruce Willis's character and Justin Long's is a lot of fun. There's also a 5th movie which I wouldn't recommend at all.
Thanks again for the watch. I'm enjoying your reactions. I'm looking forward to whatever is next!

Tech Sargent Chen is a spoof of the Kwai character of David Carradine on TV series Kung fu. Carradine is a white guy playing a Chinese character, so he squints in every closeup to get the fake eye effect. This is mainly a homage of the Star Trek fans dedication. Good reaction.
