This movie has absolutely no business being as affecting or as well-acted as it is. The fact that they managed to make the Thermians simultaneously super alien, hilariously weird, but also deeply tragic is incredible. It's one of the rare films where it's just like..."A+, no notes"
Pretty much the only way to improve it would've been Wil Wheaton's idea to cast him as a guy running his mouth about how dumb it was to have a kid as a member of the bridge crew.
I hold Rickman's performance in this movie as a great example of acting, specifically for how he delivers three variations of his character's tag line. There's the one from the original show, which is as cheesy as you'd expect from an old sci-fi show. There's the one from the store opening, which just drips with apathy and derision. And then there's the final delivery, which handles with such gravitas that it rips your heart out. Phenomenal.

My friend often calls this “a perfect movie,” and his rational is this: If you love Star Trek, you’ll love the movie. If you love making fun of people who love Star Trek, you’ll love the movie. And while I think you’re right that’s it’s a love letter to fandom, it still takes a particular level of skill to make a film that plays PERFECTLY to both of those demographics 😁

They took out REALLY good scenes; Quelleck showing Dr. Lazarus around the ship, Tech-Master Chen seeming to resolve the First Issue by asking repetitive questions until the Thermian crew did it, & some *hilarious dialogue* in the extended Rock battle scene. Oh, & Sam Rockwell _could_ have dialed it down a bit. But it's an *_excellent_* movie. That needed a *sequel* dammit!
Colantoni played Keith Mars, Veronica Mars' father, He is an excellent actor. The way the aliens talked was his idea, which he suggested to the director at his tryout. He said it was based on an exercise he learned at Yale drama school. Missy Pyle didn't have a lot of lines but she sure was good.
Weaver actually isn't just repeating the computer. She does it out of habit, but she doesn't really have to. However, since the Thermians didn't understand how pathetic her role on the show was, what we actually see happen in the movie is that the computer won't really accept commands from anyone BUT her. Every time Tim tries to ask it something, it just ignores him. It only responds to HER requests and inquiries. Because that was the Thermians' interpretation of her job on the show. They thought she was repeating the computer because she was the one in charge of the computer...not because the producers just made something up as an excuse to get a hot chick on the show. She just does the repeating bit because she's used to it...it's a deeply ingrained habit. But she's actually quite important if they want to get anything done, because they can't fully use the computer without her. I wish they'd shown more examples, but it works as it is.
I remember reading the novelization when the movie first came out. This was definitely covered. Also a very funny deleted scene where she uses the hyped up sexuality of her uniform to get over on a few of Sarice's goons.
I, and many others, hated that I cried when ALexander Dane says to Quellik, "By Granthar's Hammer, and the Sons of Warvan...you shall be avenged." Damn, I get misty eyed just typing it.
I interpreted it as "by the suns of Warvan...", i.e. by the two suns of his alien home planet. But I think the screenwriter deliberately paid homage to an old Star Trek episode where the visit an alien version of ancient Rome, and they find people there worshipping the "sun", except in the end they realize they are worshipping the "son", i.e. Jesus.
Alexander was always so obsessed with his reputation as a great actor. But saying that line and really meaning it, because it meant so much to Quellik, was his greatest performance. And it was for an audience of one.
this really is a brilliant film. It laughs with the fans, never at them. Yes its satire, yes its taking the piss, but it never loses respect for the fans of a show.
Apparently Sam Rockwell really wanted to get this role. It was right after he played Wild Bill in The Green Mile and he wanted to do something the complete opposite immediately so that he both wouldn't get typecast and so that he wouldn't be stuck in the audiences minds playing a character like that and this would balance it out.
It's worth remembering that in the 70s/80's, heck even up to about the 2010's, there was only one fandom in existence: Trekkies. Nobody else was dressing up as their favorite characters, going to conventions, writing fanfic (distributed as fanzines back then) or any of the things that tons of now do today. And this was way back when nerds were really looked down on by the rest of society, so it took some bravery. Hell, SNL even had a sketch where William Shatner lays into them for caring too much about an old TV show. The fact that they were able to reboot it into a film franchise so many years after it ended (reboots weren't popular back then), and then use that franchise to launch more television shows so that it continues to this day, is remarkable, and it's 100% because Trekkies basically invented fandom as we know it. The guy who played Mathezar (Enrico Colantoni) had been auditioning for the role and it wasn't going great, so he said "let me try one more thing, it might be kind of crazy" and right then and there basically invented everything about how Thermians act. All the other actors playing Thermians were told by the director, "just do whatever Enrico's doing." Speaking of space comedies with loaded casts, you should check out "The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy" some time.
By Grabthar's Hammer... what a movie 😐 I adore Galaxy Quest. Sam Rockwell screaming hysterically is always funny, Alan Rickman brings so much heart, and every clip of the old show makes me laugh with how camp and ridiculous it is.
5:36, this scene is based on a true incident that happened to William Shatner at a Star Trek Convention in 1996, where he overheard a couple of guys badmouthing him and the cast, calling them "frauds and liars who will never live up to their fans expectations."
One of my favorite quotes about Galaxy Quest was in a review I came across of the recent streaming series, "Only Murders in the Building", that compared the series favorably to Galaxy Quest and The Princess Bride as, "that rarest of gems, a genre parody that also manages to be an excellent example of the real thing."
The villain, Sarris, is played by the late Robin Sachs, who you might know as recurring villain Ethan Rayne in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, or as the voice of Zaeed Massani in the Mass Effect games.

And so many quotable lines! one of our favorite is "And it exploded!" as well as the all time classic "By Grabthar's Hammer, what a savings!"

You obviously appreciate what a gem of a movie this is, and best of all you are the only reactors I have seen that caught my favorite joke in the movie where Sigourney Weaver says "Let's get out of here before one of those things kills Guy!" while on the mining planet. There's some great clips I've seen from the actors playing the aliens discussing how they came up with the weird dialog choices. Basically using vocal warmup techniques to make the odd noises and to speak in that cadence. It is very effective from both being strange and funny and showing that they are alien. Also... The torture scene and Rickman's revenge quote are so effective at drawing out tears every time.
You KNOW if whoever owns the Dreamworks library now, decided to release the original PG-13 edit - ALL the superfans would have to have a collectible copy on their shelves. It would be a license to print money. I'm still kind of amazed how neither the studio or the general public appreciated this little gem in its day. So glad home video gave it the recognition & reputation it deserves, and that it's still easy to find & discover for first timers. Thanks for posting this.
To me, this movie is the 90s equivalence of "The Princess Bride". It has an amazing cast who share a great level of chemistry, the story manages to balance out the inherent sillyness of the plotline and the serious moments that makes it so great and the music score is memorable and iconic, not to mention it holds up countless rewatches. Overall, it´s damn near a perfect movie in my opinion and it will always have a special place in my heart.
When i watched this the first time i had to pause it several times because i laughed so hard. When i rewatched it, i realized how awesome this movie is. Seeing this in theatres here in Australia when it came out, I clearly remember Sigourney Weaver saying "Fuck this!" in the chompers scene. So at least it wasn't dubbed over globally. No idea if physical releases here were dubbed like in the US though.
The f-bomb was actually in the theatrical release, but dubbed over for VHS/DVD. I remember wondering why it was different the first time I watched it at home 😂

MONK IS HIGH!!?? For years I've been trying to figure what the deal was with his character. All the other characters have a vey clear angst having to do with their struggles with their career, typecasting, etc. And then there is the guy who plays the Engineer, who is just ...weird! Finally it makes sense.
He also is supposed to be playing an Asian character, and whenever he remembers to do it, i.e. when his Asian name is mentioned, he immediately narrows his eyes in the most unconvincing Asian impersonation possible.
This was an AMAZING review. I've loved this movie for years, and watching this review was like reliving it with dear friends -- you were teary-wyed when I was, laughing when I was -- this is what makes your channel so incredible. Thank you for reviewing this.
I don't know specific names, but I've read that some cast members from various incarnations of Trek consider this movie to be Trek canon. Which is about as good as it gets.

I watch the documentary almost every time I re-watch Galaxy Quest, or after I watch a UA-cam review. It is a truly wonderful look at the making of the movie and how beloved it has become since its release.
Fun Facts: the entire bridge set was built on gimbals, so it really did tilt & shake during certain scenes. Sam Rockwell's scream was not scripted. if you watch carefully, Sigourney Weaver nearly jumps out of her skin in surprise. Kudos on noticing the fact that Tech Sargent Chen was stoned the entire movie. Most folks miss thatl Weaver had a nice reference to Aliens: "Ducts! Why is it always ducts!?" I'll skip all the references, but the whole costume thing was real. Female crew had to wear those miniskirts on the original series, and on Voyager Jeri Ryan played Seven of Six, who was usually dressed in skin tight catsuits. The reason Gwen's bra was visible has to do with a hilarious deleted scene that was a little too adult for the more kid-friendly rating. @Serai3 DUDE, it depended on where you lived. Here in Louisiana it was in fact 99 cents a gallon up until the year 2000, that summer it went up to a dollar 50 a gallon. I appreciate your reactions- so funny and sincere. And even though I've seen this movie at least a dozen times, I cried along with you-just now! My father had AD, and this movie was one of the last connections i made with him, harking back fifty years and us watching the premiere of Star Trek on our B&W television. The level of writing, direction, costume... every facet of this movie is evenly matched to the talent playing within. It's a demi-glace of a film.
What an amazing movie, one of my favorites, & knowing the Star Trek lore/tropes AND the much-discussed travails & tribulations of Shatner & Co. since the show/movies ended, just made it all the sweeter. It's like Disney World for Trekkies/sci-fi buffs.

Tim Allen at first didn't want to do the sad part... and seeing thw other actor show so much raw emotions which totally made Tim show the same was just heart wrenching... at the end Rickmans words to Tim was... "that's acting for you"

I just want to say, yesterday I saved this video for later in order to revisit the movie today and also watch the documentary for the first time before watching your reactions and be in the same page as you. Am glad i did. Because i also cried both with the movie and the documentary. The final treat for me was that Jessa got to comment about the funny anecdote about Alan Rickman from the documentary, that was GOLD. 😄 ❤️… I love when Jessa comes prepared for your reactions, it makes them a whole experience along with the very funny comments from Alex.
Oddly I saw this film before watching Harry Potter. However, it wasn’t until after Deathly Hallows Part 2 came out did I realize that Doctor Lazarus and Professor Snape were both played by Alan Rickman. I don’t know why, I’m usually pretty quick on those kinds of things. And who else will agree that Sam Rockwell is one of the most underrated actors today? The man did this film and The Green Mile within months of each other and proved that he could play both lovable goofballs and despicable psychopaths. He also played Francis Flute in A Midsummer Night’s Dream opposite Kevin Kline that same year. He’s also won or been nominated for several acting awards. But yet hardly anyone talks about him! Why?

One of my favorite quotes about Galaxy Quest was in a review I came across of the recent streaming series, "Only Murders in the Building", that compared the series favorably to Galaxy Quest and The Princess Bride as, "that rarest of gems, a genre parody that also manages to be an excellent example of the real thing."
I haven't see "Only Murders in the Building" so can't vouch for that, but I'd say "Hot Fuzz" deserves a spot at the table.

The villain, Sarris, is played by the late Robin Sachs, who you might know as recurring villain Ethan Rayne in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, or as the voice of Zaeed Massani in the Mass Effect games.

One of my all time favorites. You are exactly right that its a love letter to fandom in general and science fiction in general. It's the best Star Trek movie, still, lol. And so many quotable lines! one of our favorite is "And it exploded!" as well as the all time classic "By Grabthar's Hammer, what a savings!"
The same year Sam Rockwell played Guy Fleegman in this movie he also played William Wharton in the Green Mile. It just goes to show what a versatile actor he is.

You obviously appreciate what a gem of a movie this is, and best of all you are the only reactors I have seen that caught my favorite joke in the movie where Sigourney Weaver says "Let's get out of here before one of those things kills Guy!" while on the mining planet. There's some great clips I've seen from the actors playing the aliens discussing how they came up with the weird dialog choices. Basically using vocal warmup techniques to make the odd noises and to speak in that cadence. It is very effective from both being strange and funny and showing that they are alien. Also... The torture scene and Rickman's revenge quote are so effective at drawing out tears every time.
You KNOW if whoever owns the Dreamworks library now, decided to release the original PG-13 edit - ALL the superfans would have to have a collectible copy on their shelves. It would be a license to print money.
I'm still kind of amazed how neither the studio or the general public appreciated this little gem in its day. So glad home video gave it the recognition & reputation it deserves, and that it's still easy to find & discover for first timers.

To me, this movie is the 90s equivalence of "The Princess Bride". It has an amazing cast who share a great level of chemistry, the story manages to balance out the inherent sillyness of the plotline and the serious moments that makes it so great and the music score is memorable and iconic, not to mention it holds up countless rewatches. Overall, it´s damn near a perfect movie in my opinion and it will always have a special place in my heart.
When i watched this the first time i had to pause it several times because i laughed so hard. When i rewatched it, i realized how awesome this movie is. All the details they nailed and the phantastic acting, i didnt recognized the first time. A loveletter to the core. Glad you enjoyed it! Btw: 'Orville' is a show, that goes in the same direction. I think you might like it.
they were talking about doing a new sequel or streaming series but plans kinda fell apart after Alan Rickman passed away. May he rest in peace...
Seeing this in theatres here in Australia when it came out, I clearly remember Sigourney Weaver saying "Fuck this!" in the chompers scene. So at least it wasn't dubbed over globally. No idea if physical releases here were dubbed like in the US though.
I believe the producers wanted a PG rating so it had to be overdubbed in the US, otherwise it would of gotten a PG-13 rating.
The f-bomb was actually in the theatrical release, but dubbed over for VHS/DVD. I remember wondering why it was different the first time I watched it at home 😂
I love this movie, it is so much fun, and especially great for those old enough to have watched the early Star Trek and understand all the references. Yes, it's a 'loving homage"
If you enjoy Alan Rickman and Sam Rockwell having hilarious fun in space (and it seems you do), you guys should definitely watch The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. You won't regret it!

For years I've been trying to figure what the deal was with his character. All the other characters have a vey clear angst having to do with their struggles with their career, typecasting, etc. And then there is the guy who plays the Engineer, who is just ...weird!
Finally it makes sense.
He also is supposed to be playing an Asian character, and whenever he remembers to do it, i.e. when his Asian name is mentioned, he immediately narrows his eyes in the most unconvincing Asian impersonation possible.
Far and away the most enjoyable reaction to Galaxy Quest I've seen! Well done!

I watched this for the first time in 20 years and I gotta say it holds up super well.
I don't know specific names, but I've read that some cast members from various incarnations of Trek consider this movie to be Trek canon.
Which is about as good as it gets.
I really enjoyed watching the two of you get such a kick and appreciate this movie. It’s one of my favorites, who’d of ever thought you’d see these particular actors together…. ever. It’s criminally overlooked but has a cult following.
I love that Rockwell did both this and The Green Mile the same year, showing incredible range right out of the gate.

I watch the documentary almost every time I re-watch Galaxy Quest, or after I watch a UA-cam review. Fun Facts: the entire bridge set was built on gimbals, so it really did tilt & shake during certain scenes.
Sam Rockwell's scream was not scripted. if you watch carefully, Sigourney Weaver nearly jumps out of her skin in surprise.

Weaver had a nice reference to Aliens: "Ducts! Why is it always ducts!?"
I'll skip all the references, but the whole costume thing was real. Female crew had to wear those miniskirts on the original series, and on Voyager Jeri Ryan played Seven of Six, who was usually dressed in skin tight catsuits.
The reason Gwen's bra was visible has to do with a hilarious deleted scene that was a little too adult for the more kid-friendly rating. The other deleted scenes are also good.

@Serai3 DUDE, it depended on where you lived. Here in Louisiana it was in fact 99 cents a gallon up until the year 2000, that summer it went up to a dollar 50 a gallon. I was working an insurance job back then that required me driving around a lot. I could have specified this in my original comment, but I also never stated this was nationwide

My father had AD, and this movie was one of the last connections i made with him, harking back fifty years and us watching the premiere of Star Trek on our B&W television.
The level of writing, direction, costume... every facet of this movie is evenly matched to the talent playing within.
It's a demi-glace of a film.

What an amazing movie, one of my favorites, & knowing the Star Trek lore/tropes AND the much-discussed travails & tribulations of Shatner & Co. since the show/movies ended, just made it all the sweeter. It's like Disney World for Trekkies/sci-fi buffs.
Funny that this Role as "Guy" launched Sam Rockwell's career, but also everyone delivers in Galaxy Quest.
The scene with Tommy scraping the ship on the side-I did that once to my car coming out of the garage! I can relate!
I love Star Trek, and this is one of my favourite Star Trek movies.

Tim Allen at first didn't want to do the sad part... and seeing thw other actor show so much raw emotions which totally made Tim show the same was just heart wrenching... at the end Rickmans words to Tim was... "that's acting for you"

After Alan Rickman's death there was a tribute video made of the cast talking about him and to me the most moving part was when Enrico Colatoni said " He was the first film star who wanted to be my friend." What a Mathasar moment.😢

I just want to say, yesterday I saved this video for later in order to revisit the movie today and also watch the documentary for the first time before watching your reactions and be in the same page as you. Am glad i did. Because i also cried both with the movie and the documentary. The final treat for me was that Jessa got to comment about the funny anecdote about Alan Rickman from the documentary, that was GOLD. 😄 ❤️… I love when Jessa comes prepared for your reactions, it makes them a whole experience along with the very funny comments from Alex.
Oddly I saw this film before watching Harry Potter. However, it wasn’t until after Deathly Hallows Part 2 came out did I realize that Doctor Lazarus and Professor Snape were both played by Alan Rickman. I don’t know why, I’m usually pretty quick on those kinds of things.
And who else will agree that Sam Rockwell is one of the most underrated actors today? The man did this film and The Green Mile within months of each other and proved that he could play both lovable goofballs and despicable psychopaths. He also played Francis Flute in A Midsummer Night’s Dream opposite Kevin Kline that same year. He’s also won or been nominated for several acting awards. But yet hardly anyone talks about him! Why?

Also, Galaxy Quest is considered by many film professors to be an example of a "perfect movie" because of the pacing and storytelling and acting and production. The emotional journey of the audience is considered to be masterfully orchestrated. Etc.

The bathroom bit actually happened to William Shatner. Alan Rickman didn't want to do this because he didn't like outter space Sci-Fi, but when he read the script he couldn't resist.
If you like Alan and haven't seen Dogma, its a must. Also I hope you guys do Moon Knight.
