This was a huge hit at the time because it coincided with the women's movement of the 70s, becoming a theme song. It was played constantly on the radio.
This was a song written by Helen Reddy. It's not just an empowering song to some women. It is an anthem. At the time, 1971, women required a man to co-sign contracts, mortgages and get a credit card. And child-support laws were still a work in progress. The social impact of the women's movement cannot be underestimated. It's a shame that many young people don't understand the history and struggles and take things for granted today.
Helen Reddy was a goddess! A brilliant, totally unique voice. She has a huge catalogue of music with not a single bad song in it. I highly recommend "Delta Dawn", "Ain't No Way To Treat A Lady", "Somewhere In The Night", and "Emotion".
Out of the Vietnam War protests was born the Woman's Movement of the late 1960s into the 1970s. Until 1968, a married Texas woman couldn't own property or start a business without her husband's permission. Although my Mother worked as a teacher, she could not buy a car in her own name, it had to be registered to my Dad. This song was an anthem for the Women's Movement.

Helen was a radio staple in the 70's, with lots of hits, and a host of the Friday night music show "Midnight Special." The next song to react to would be "Angie Baby," a cool song with an interesting lyric.
This song was iconic because it became a part of the Women's Lib movement, which was going strong at the time, and became a call to action and affirmation. It was a huge hit. It's hard to imagine how different life was for women even in the 70s than it is today but, they had a lot of obstacles to overcome. My favorite Helen Reddy song is "Angie Baby".
I remember all of my little friends and I singing this song on the day we decided to challenge my public school's dress code, along with my mum, who was a teacher at the aforementioned elementary school. Back in the dark ages of the 70's, the female staff and students couldn't wear pants in school, even in winter. So one day quite a few of us kids, and female teachers, just came in nice pants. My mum wanted to make a statement, so she wore a hot pink pantsuit. They yeeted the rule after that. It felt powerful and positive to me as a young girl to know that "🎵 I am woman hear me roar, in numbers too great to ignore..."!
Good for you gals! I remember back on the 60’s being the first girl on high school to bleach my hair blonde, and my mother did it for me. The principal came to my first class of the day and made a big deal out of it. Then I was the first girl to wear a mini skirt! It was a checkerboard print. A teacher came up to me and told me that we don’t wear mini skirts. I told her, you may not, but I do! And I walked off. This experience was bold for me because I was always an introvert. But that soon changed. Then in later life, there was the time I decided to wear a narrow tie(husband’s)with my double breasted suit to friends funeral. I got so many compliments from the other ladies. They said “I would have never thought to do that.” And once I wore a tie with a white jacket. The mayor saw it and wanted it. So, eventually I gave in and gave it to him. And again, I decided I wanted a man’s watch. Hubby tried to talk me out of it. But I told him no. That was all before those two things became a fashion thing. I always said I’m not a follower, I do what I want. If nobody likes it, that’s their problem.
As a teenage female in the 70’s, I really loved This song. It was inspiring. But as an adult women currently I find it more empowering. Loved Helen Ready, she had many many great song. 60 years old, was a girl when this was popular, and it STILL gets me in the feels ❤ It’s an ANTHEM and it needs to make a comeback as we need it now more than ever.
I was a young girl when this song came out and it was one of a handful that had a real impact on my thinking. Women's Lib, bra burning, the sexual revolution, ERA. All these were issues on the nightly news back then. This was very empowering.
You have no idea how powerful this anthem was to women. I was 14 at that time and in California. I have no words. I did not know that she passed. sad to hear that. She played her role well on this planet.
Loved this song It was iconic for millions of women. During a very needed time. It was ( a man's world) were not just words, women were very much a second class citizen. Some even less and in some countries they still are..
I grew up listening to Helen on the Radio, just hearing her voice brings me back. My Mum who I now have the honour of caring for (83 bless her) when I was 3 her song You & Me Against the World was released; I can remember (even at 53) her picking me up & dancing with me in the kitchen. At the time (1971) I had no idea that my father had just left us for her best friend & her entire world had just crumbled; all I knew is that I felt safe 💜 It's "our song" 🥺💜 This song is such an anthem for the womans movement & equality that I can't put into words💜 Delta Dawn & Angie Baby are another classics but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE react to You and Me Against the World 💚💚

Tears in my eyes listening to this. At the beginning of the women’s movement in the 1970’s. As a teenager then and a woman now, you have no idea how meaningful this is. It’s about knocking on the door and telling the men, who had ALL the power, look out, here we come, we’re much stronger than you know, and we’re not taking anymore of your dismissive BS anymore. It’s a song of hope and freedom for women. And the struggle is not over. I marched for the E.R.A. in 1976. It still hasn’t been ratified by enough states to become the law of the land.
Ah, Helen Reddy, the girl from Victoria, surely one of Australia's greatest singing exports. It's not Easy, No Way to Treat a Lady, Angie Baby...to name just three of her hits. A chanteuse whom you have yet to feature is the enigmatic Sia, another Aussie, and one most well known for her aversion to being considered a celebrity, and her keenness to avoid fame. Surely, though, her international hit, "Chandelier" must rate as one of the most popular songs that talent show contestants try to sing. I was in my young twenties and participated in some of the "movement" of the time. Participated in a huge "woman's liberation" conference. A very exciting time for me. I'm too old and tired to get into everything going on now, I wish I could. So much has changed, and not for the better. I have a "I AM WOMAN" Sticker I have stuck to one of my things. A constant reminder of where I was and where I am now.
Leave Me Alone (Ruby Red Dress) is a catchy tune Helen Reddy said she didn't like to perform. Unmistakable voice, beautiful. I did like the movie although Jeff, not so much. He had no idea the rare treasure he had married. So he blew it.
It's been a long time since I've heard this brilliant song. It actually brought a tear to my eyes: one of the few songs in our history that had serious importance to the equality movement. This is not just a song--- it's an Anthem.
"Ain't No Way to Treat a Lady" has a beautiful bridge. ("I Am Woman," like many songs, doesn't have one; just repeats verse and chorus.) "Ain't..." is just a musically inventive song. I write music and find this one of the best songs Helen did because the bridge is like a rest, a pause for the brain...oh, what's this...different notes. Good bridges are hard to write. If you're amenable. Thanks for this one, though. I remember how much I really liked Helen. :)
I'm a child of the 70's and I also remember hearing this song but not really understanding it's importance. My grandpa was one of "those" men. I remember some comments he made. One was "women were put on earth to serve man." He'd say he was kidding, but I question it. He also said that women shouldn't be in the workplace making important decisions! When I told him I was going to law school, I thought he was going to have a stroke! I had to walk away from grandpa! Don't misinterpret this...my grandpa was a great man that provided extremely well for his family's future. My grandma was his Queen and he proved that everyday of their lives! But, that knuckle-dragging, chauvinistic thinking was strong in gramps! I also need to thank all the women from the generation before me for finally taking a stand - the stand that allows me to be in the profession of my choice! From the bottom of my heart, I thank you all!
I always wondered why I occasionally heard a woman say, "I am woman. Hear me roar!" I thought it was such a strange thing to say. Now I know where it came from. :)
My favorite song by her is Angie Baby. Listen to that. It used to scare the hell out of me as a kid because I couldn't understand what happened to the boy in the song LOL!!
I don't know if you have critiqued "Anne Murray" yet she is about the same time period as Helen Reddy. AND she also has a powerful strong unique voice that I would love to hear you give an opinion on Javon. One of the songs I really love by Anne Murray is called "Cotton Jenny." AND that's one that's special from my childhood. She also sang the song that I got married too back in 1981. AND that is called "Can I have This dance." She had many many other good songs 🎶 and I'm sure that some of the other listeners could recall.🤔
Your next song you should play is her song You And Me Against The World. I loved her music when I was a kid, she was in the original movie Pete's Dragan, it a musical and I fell in love with her voice watching the movie.
Wow that's a blast from the past.i haven't seen Pete's dragon in decades used to get shown quite a bit in the UK when I was a kid.there wasn't as much TV or films for kids like there is now.
After the success of this song, she ditched her husband who was her manager, because he was taking most of the money and making the decisions. They tried to stop her from releasing this song because they knew it would empower women. she started playing it live and everyone loved it so they reluctantly released it. still a strong message
She is a beautiful singer. From Canada. Just an FYI lol I don't know how to love him and Delta Dawn are a couple good ones. She was during my era. Being named Dawn people would sing the hook at me. Lol
The anthem of the woman's movement in the 70s it was considered very controversial at the time and many stations refused to play it saying it was a man hating song. Fter today's supreme court leak about reversing roe vs Wade we need to hear it again and again and again. Shame on them.
Many people forget about the equal rights movement for women, this was very popular when I was starting Jr. High School as our country was going thru a big transition.
When you think that women have only had the legal right to own a credit card, in their name for 50 years. Banks could deny women accounts, it was hard to get jobs, they had minimal rights. This woman was a pioneer. She is not given enough credit for her anthem for women. This was women's theme song of the day.
I am 74 years old. This was our anthem. It was a game changing song.
I was a 9 year old boy in 1971, and yeah, I got it and loved it...still do- VOTE BLUE!

I've seen this video in it's live version. Her voice was amazing. All her music is stellar. Really enjoy your videos
She does a touching job with You and me against the World.
I LOVED your reaction! You got it! It was so important at the time and empowered us when we needed it!
"Peaceful" is a vibe.
Interesting song!
I love her energy! Check out “Candle On the Water” from Pete’s Dragon. It’s another good example of Helen’s talent!
Do more Helen!
You should hear Angie Baby as well ❤️
Jeff Lynne / ELO fame wrote a song for Helen Reddy called Poor Little Fool 💜💗
I would react to Helen Reddy singing It's Not Easy from the movie Pete's Dragon.
AND that is called "Can I have This dance."
She had many many other good songs 🎶 and I'm sure that some of the other listeners could recall.🤔
Your next song you should play is her song You And Me Against The World. I loved her music when I was a kid, she was in the original movie Pete's Dragan, it a musical and I fell in love with her voice watching the movie.
This was live!!!
I’ve loved this song since I was a kid and I watched the Sex and The City 2 movie 😂
Her song "candle on the water" from "Pete's dragon" is really good.
Wow that's a blast from the past.i haven't seen Pete's dragon in decades used to get shown quite a bit in the UK when I was a kid.there wasn't as much TV or films for kids like there is now.
Good counterpoint to Loverboy....
Believe in yourself, turn yourself loose, you are strong, you are invincible!
The Isley Brothers "If Leaving Me Is Easy "
I linked this Helen Reddy video to the most recent (1 week ago) Iranian protest news website. I hope it gets around to them.
After the success of this song, she ditched her husband who was her manager, because he was taking most of the money and making the decisions. They tried to stop her from releasing this song because they knew it would empower women. she started playing it live and everyone loved it so they reluctantly released it. still a strong message
❤️ ❤️ ❤️
She is a beautiful singer. From Canada. Just an FYI lol I don't know how to love him and Delta Dawn are a couple good ones. She was during my era. Being named Dawn people would sing the hook at me. Lol

@@chele6828 Thank you for correcting me. It's been awhile. 🙂
🎶🎶🔥🔥🔥🔥🎶💯
The anthem of the woman's movement in the 70s it was considered very controversial at the time and many stations refused to play it saying it was a man hating song. Fter today's supreme court leak about reversing roe vs Wade we need to hear it again and again and again. Shame on them.
Sadly in 2022 we now have to ask "what is a women?"
Good point
This was a woman's anthem I was a preteen but taught me independence and I could do anything don't need a man
Many people forget about the equal rights movement for women, this was very popular when I was starting Jr. High School as our country was going thru a big transition.
Helen Reddy is 2nd only to Karen Carpenter in terms of best female artist. Pure brilliance. She has a load of great songs in her catalogue.
👍👍👍
Latasha Lee "After Party "

Tori Amos - Winter live in Montreux is epic
Angie Baby is a good one by her
When you think that women have only had the legal right to own a credit card, in their name for 50 years. Banks could deny women accounts, it was hard to get jobs, they had minimal rights. This woman was a pioneer. She is not given enough credit for her anthem for women. This was women's theme song of the day.
