You deserve residual payment from Classic Firearms, JGSales, etc. for teaching their customers how to turn a cosmoline caked paperweight, into a beautiful rifle. Thanks dude. Hope you get a bunch more views and likes. Also, you kind of have a Bob Ross Feel. I have watched at least 200 videos for different firearms I own, and you are one of the best.
Nice work Tp. Very informative and thorough. I would have to agree as well that this is the best video on UA-cam demonstrating M48 disassembly and reassembly. You could easily do this for a living!
Thanks for the video, very clear and helpful. Needed it to assist in putting back together my M48 that has been sitting totally stripped for like 8 months while I've refinished the stock (yes I'm slow lol).
Gorgeous rifle. I have the M48A M24/47 and a 24/52C. when i got my first Mauser, it was your vids I watched to learn how to take it apart properly. Keep it up! love your vids.
I really like your video bud you did grate on showing how take the yugo mauser apart really helps people learning how to work on one or needing tips on how to keep up the good work bud
The barrel bands and the floor plate are usually very hard to remove .A vise grip to compress the spring, 4-5 cleaning patches on wood side under vise grip, and still very hard to knock them off with out scratching the wood. Fl. Plate -ask someone to push in the detent, while you are knocking it out using flat screw driver wrapped in tape or plastic or hardwood dowel.
the sight hood is simply a piece of stamped metal that just slides on the front sight very easy to remove not tricky at all to remove / however if you mess it up then it will not fit tight maybe this is why he didnt remove it but it is rather easy to do and if you do mess it up a bit you can just pinch it back together to make it a tight fit again
good video to learn from. i agree with everything ya did. lol. i just bought and put on a MoJo rear sight cause my ole eyes and now i shoot it again. i'm saving this video and telling my friends. lol. thanks again.
Thanks for sharing have the same one ,, the only thing that bothers me is the sling keeper that sticks out the right side, gets in the way of my hand when shooting,, but otherwise one of my favs,,
Yeah they figured that since soldiers would be carrying these things more than shooting them that making it more comfortable to carry was the most important.
Excellent video, huge help. Maybe you can help with something, you seem very knowledgeable. Just got an M48 and the bolt takes a good amount of force to pull up initially to cock. Once its up it pulls back fine, goes back in smooth and will pull up and back smooth, once cocked. When the bolt lands home and dry fire is when it starts all over again. Bolt is in good condition, no rust or pitting, ive cleaned the cosmoline out. Is there something i can do to help smooth out the bolt? Thanks in advance
Mausers are cock on open. Means you are camming back the cocking piece, striker, and mainspring as you open the bolt. You can put a little grease on the cam surface but the initial force required to open the bolt will always be there. If you have more force than normally required for a mauser then a solid cleaning might be in order.
Wow that was fast, I appreciate the input. I took the bolt apart (following your video) and put all the parts in hot water for a half hour and wiped off all the cosmoline i could find. Before removing the cosmoline it wasn't hard to open, it was kinda sluggish but didn't require any force. I've read on forums about lapping compounds on bolt parts. Thoughts? think I've read so many different ideas I'm even more confused now. This is my first bolt action rifle so please forgive my ignorance
Mine father use this gun in war vs Serbia agression on Croatia he was sniper for croatian army i still have his M48 in basment.Gun became rusty so i watch this video to restore the gun and i will put her on wall thanks for video mean you help me
Can the lower band be reversed? I bought a m48 for cheap on an online firearm auction looks brand new condition, but the lower band where the sling goes looks to be flipped to the right side from the pics. Can it be slide forward and flipped so the sling is on the correct side (left)?
Just follow along with the video and then when reassembling just turn the band to the opposite side. Very common mistake on rifles that have solid sling loops on the barrel bands.
So I just bought an m48 today and it has cosmoline on it. To clean it, should I disassemble anymore than you did or should I just stick with what you did?
This has nothing to do with your video, but I have the need for some gunsmithing tools. Do you have any recommendations for which kits/brands to get? Also I need gunsmithing accessories such as your red box you have your gun sitting in. Any recomendations for things like that?
Midway USA will probably have everything you need. Just don't buy the cheapest stuff out there and you should be fine. I'm not big on any brand in particular. I think that red stand was made by case guard but I can't recall right now.
Hey I have no idea what happened but I followed all your instructions, and cleaned the cosmoline off when it was disassembled and gave everything a really light ballistol coat that I wiped off as much as possible. Now when I reassembled the rifle the trigger breaks before the second stage. It's basically a single stage rifle now. Can you think of any reason that would have happened? I checked and I did not switch the bolt detent spring with the trigger spring.
I honestly can't think of a reason as to why that would happen. There really isn't anything that can change in the trigger that would cause that. I would pop the rifle open and see if any crud got in the trigger while you were putting it back together. Also check the sear surfaces as well, make sure no crud is on those.
So how do you take the front sight hood off the m48? I'm trying to find people online that have videos but I havent found one yet. Any help would be very appreciated!
You have to spread it apart, unlike a K98 which is more of a friction fit, the M48 has tabs that keep it from getting pulled off. You need to clear the tabs in order to remove it from the base. It is a pain and not really worth doing for general maintenance.
Thank you 👍 , I’ve M48 and I want to clean the bolt spring from cosmoline ! Can I use hot water or boiling water to remove it and then clean it with WD40 ! Without lubricate it with oil
Excellent tutorial....I would only suggest that you remove any reference to WD-40 as a proper lubricant. The WD = "Water Displacing" and that is it's only redeeming property. In guns, it tends to gum up over time.....into a very hard substance and can lead to problems.
He did not say to use WD40 as a lubricant. He said to use it as a cleaner which it is excellent for. I have been using it for a cleaner for almost 50 years. I then clean it off with a rag and use a very light coat of Mobile 1 synthetic motor oil for a lubricant. A light coat of Mobile 1 works great in the gas tube and on the piston of an AK47 or an SKS and the carbon that builds up wipes off easily with a rag without scrubbing
Grady Poteat Hi , first time I hear someone using WD In rifles! And motor oil for lubricants ! That’s clever ...but I don’t know if that is good thing or not .... any way I want to ask you what happens if you use WD on the wood ?
Brassstacker.com sells a "Mauser Recoil Lug Nut Spanner Wrench", which you can pop into any socket wrench to remove the recoil lug nut. Brownells has a wrench for the same purpose, but it costs twice as much. Sootch00 has a video on adding a scout scope to the M48, which involves removing the recoil lug, using that same tool, for installation of the rail mount, as it is the best way that I know of to add an optic to k98-style rifles without permanent modification.
its a special wrench that you can get with a gunsmiths screwdriver set but i would also recommend you leave it be. The wood swells up around it and when you back it out you can easily chip your stock.
Fuck... I have the same gun and I screwed with the bolt... it just stuck and I cant do anything... Now I have real "pain in the ass" to get it right -.- Can you show me the easiest way to do it???
I did I think the same thing as you. I some how had the bolt in the 'fired' position outside the gun. I had to mess with it for a while but I was eventually able to cock the bolt while it was outside the gun. It was very hard but I was able to do it.
@@gatortime1086 If you have a drilled and tapped mauser the scope will mount pretty low and the safety probably will get in the way. If you buy a special scope mount that you dont have to drill into the rifle you may be able to use the safety cause they generally mount high or are made to work around the safety. Hopefully this helps!
Anyone here know if you can put a K98 style handguard on a czech vz24? I just picked up a guatemalan mauser and its got everything but the hand guard and personal preference i dont really like the full hand guard so i was curious if a k98 style would work.
Targetpopper would you happen to know what could cause a loading issue,...When i have a full 5 rounds in the well the first round tends to get get wedged sometimes,.. all other rounds load very easily with minimum effort. If i dont give the first round a lil extra push sometimes it gets wedged. Any ideas?? The follower and spring both appear to be in good shape and the magazine well/box sits pretty flush with the receiver so i dont think its getting caught up. This could be common among mausers i wouldnt know since this is my first one. Any info is greatly appreciated. thanks
I've got a few mausers that do it as well. Provided I give it a good nudge forward it works fine. I think it's just the friction caused by the overly compressed follower spring and magazine lip that cause it. I am not sure though as I just always powdered through it.
Yeah i kinda figured it might just be the nature of the beast with these things. Its a non issue like i said i just make sure i put a lil bit behind that one. Thanks for the response.
@@Targetpopper cool im not a fan of hooded sights so i was hoping there wasnt anything finnicky like threads or what have you that really needed the hoods protection

I used to carry it all around with me as well. It's funny how many inaccuracies are in there.

Thank you, M48A here much needed information, mine is still unfired.. needed to disassemble the bolt and you’re right on time! Great work man.

Graduation on bottom of rear sight for shooting while prone, don't have to lift head to change range. Just got a mauser and this video was perfect.
Nice thanks. I already knew how to do this but nice to see how you did it. My M48A is experienced like yours - and has the stamped parts too.
Great, informative video, pal, this will really help me with the initial cleanup from the cosmoline. Cheers, bro!

I don't know enough about the zf41 mount to say.
How is the bayonet lug held on or what is it attached to.
It's pinned onto the stock. I wouldn't remove it unless you had to. Its a pain to line that pin back up.

What tool do you use to remove that funny bolt on the stock with the two little holes in it? Some sort of spanner? I can't find the tool for it.

Hard to say. Make sure you full depress the spring and then try tapping the bands with a non marring drift of some sort.
