It's a momentous day for Columbia University, and congratulations to President Shafik on her inauguration!
I do however respectfully suggest a reevaluation of your opposition to Universal Basic Income (UBI).
In your speech, you referred to yourself as a "3rd generation Ph.D.," which made me consider the potential blind spots that may have influenced your negative view of UBI. It's important to acknowledge that targeting benefits may not always be the most efficient or effective way to assist those who are most in need, particularly those who may not have had the same educational advantages and intellectual gifts as someone such as yourself. UBI is not about "giving up on people" as you've previously suggested; it's about establishing an income floor for everyone and recognizing the universal right to basic financial security.
I hope that in future inaugural addresses, Columbia University can celebrate a nation that embraces Universal Basic Income, especially given the contributions of its alumni, such as Andrew Yang, who have played pivotal roles in advancing its adoption.
