  • Can love be reduced to just science? We like to believe we’re in control of our dating lives, but is this really true? Max explores the merits of evolutionary and social psychology, attempting to work out just how deterministic love really is.

His voice adds so much to these videos. It’s a great mix of accent, tone and cadence. He sounds very knowledgeable, but also friendly instead of dull and overly professorial. Makes it even easier to be pulled into the subject matter. Good job!

I've experienced this myself before, it really is like a drug and can make you addicted, and once it's over you will feel the withdrawal symptoms

I think I needed this today. I ended my 1 year old complicated, unrewarding, draining relationship today on valentine's day. Yesterday we marked 1 year of this whatever "thing" was going on and I thought it was enough and I ended it today.

Ooh, this is good to know! Makes sense that some people would be more predisposed to long-term pair bonding than others, explains why our current understanding of relationships is so hard to navigate, because we project so often that people are a certain way, not through rigorous testing, but crossing our fingers.

I enjoyed the very brief flicker of useful information conveyed in the phrase "low dilation". When someone sees something they really like, their pupils get bigger in order to take in more light and see that thing more clearly. And while most of us have an implicit sense of when someone is attracted to us, there are some of us with a more explicit sense. I used to play poker, and the same rules apply -- watch someone's eyes for larger pupils to indicate that they're excited by their cards.
If you watch enough people's eyes, you'll eventually see it and recognize it. It can be useful for finding people who like you (though, again, most of us already pick this up implicitly and thus we're already taking advantage though we can't explain why) but unfortunately it also lets you know when someone's disinterested. It's heart-breaking to not even have secret hope because you know "she's just not that into you".

Love is the need to find acceptance and approval to replace the rejection and abandonment we experience in infancy by being weaned before ready and being put down before ready to explore on our own. Love is a self-centered emotion derived from fear - the fear of failure, which is why the "honeymoon" is short lived. Nurturing love, on the other hand, is the awakening of consciousness, which is the greatest gift and ultimate purpose of life.

100% determinism is nonsense, but it's true that a large part of our life is already determined by various factors and conditions, as well as our past choices.

ah, and horniness and love are 2 very different things, almost opposites, otherwise we would want to have koitus with our children we love, when I am in love with a girl my hornieness drops significantly and I rather want to cuddle and protect her than having koitus with her

Love is God, that's why all creation recognises it. You can't comprehend the infinite and limitless by only using your extremely limited brain. By looking at the chemicals and trying to rationalise it you are looking at a very tiny piece of the whole, an insignificant symptom that is mistaken for love, while also using a dirty lense that is impossible to see through. A flawed and limited approach will produce a flawed and limited conclussion. We are the Universe becoming aware of it self, looking at itself
