      Actually, everything is scripted on TV shows and in videos, and the agcy controls all media / TV / contents etc and all trends and all tech and all industries etc, which were all made by them - despite repeating a lot the same things over and over, he does make some valid points! For example, self-proclaimed polyglots only speak one or two languages really fluently, while being beginner level or intermediate level or only learning certain phrases and certain words that are asked and answered a lot (and planning the questions & answers beforehand) in most others! When someone isn’t an English speaker, he can usually speak his first language fluently and then English also fluently or almost fluently and some speak English as a first language, as English is the easiest and the most used languages, so almost everyone can speak English nowadays, and sometimes one may also be fluent enough in another language, such as Spanish or Italian or French or Dutch or German etc, which are also very easy to learn!

      Very few beings can learn a language fast and multiple languages fast, as it takes inteIIigence or at least some mental acuity - so only I can do that fast & also all my protectors who are all top agents (because we possess the rare quality inteI / IQ aka logic and are a fast-thinker with total mentaI acuity) and, a few other agents that I haven’t met yet can also learn faster than most (because they have some mentaI acuity) and maybe a few others as well, but it’s usually agents, because that type of guy is usually recruited, while non-agents take years or even decades to learn a new language to fluency, and I also am the only one reflecting names such as Linda / Lindie etc and most other names that get misused (special names / big names / flower names / other nature related names / names that reflect a compIiment etc) and I am the only being reflecting big terms etc aka The Goddess / The Lady / The Queen / The Leader / The Princess / The Star etc, and most hum’ns misuse unsuitable names or unsuitable terms etc, which must be changed!

    You said there's nothing to gain from lying. Well, that is obviously not true. If you can speak 3 languages well, native, English and German, because you live in Germany (just an example). Then you learn French, and some Italian, because it's very close to French, and Dutch, which is similar to German. All of that is fine, Your languages range from A2 to C1. Then the fraud begins for some, which is learning the basics of different languages in the basis of one language per month or more. What you gain from that? Views=money. Half of Europeans could identify you're exaggerating or right down lying, but 80% of Americans would be none the wiser. If you learn 3 words of an Indian language, you'd get bazillions of views from Indians saying you speak excellent Bengali or Telugu.

    • @studywithalex
      @studywithalex  10 місяців тому +4

      That's true, but now you're heading more into the question is what is the definition of "speaking a language" because that person who speaks 3 words of Bengali or Telugu still speaks 3 more words of Bengali or Telugu than most Americans or Europeans, and C1 people are not the only people who are qualified to talk about the experience of learning.

    • @RogerRamos1993
      @RogerRamos1993 10 місяців тому +7

      @@studywithalex Speaking a language is different from being C1 in a language. I agree with you on that. However, words have meanings. If I speak a language below A2 level, I'd never dare to say I speak it. I would say I know some X language. In my case, I say I speak Portuguese (n), English, French and Italian. My spoken Italian is quite limited, but I can read almost effortlessly in Italian and understand almost everything I hear. I may or may not say I speak Spanish, which is a language that I learned without trying and being able to understand in songs and in literature from the get-go. I never speak Spanish though, and would most certainly transfer a lot of my Portuguese to it. German is a language that I am close to reach an A1 level, and I wouldn't say I speak, maybe a tiny bit, as now I am starting to be able to follow texts written in A1 or A2 levels. I've read a few books in Catalan, but I don't speak it. I've read a book in Neapolitan, but I don't speak it.

    • @studywithalex
      @studywithalex  10 місяців тому +2

      @@RogerRamos1993 I'm very much the same. I'm really careful with the words I use to describe my levels because we still live in this world where people take "speak" or "know" very seriously in language learning.
      I think we can blame some of this to the limited character count of UA-cam videos or social media posts that cannot express all the shades of gray you're describing.

      I really liked that video from Days of Swedish and French that you're talking about, about "I learned X in two weeks". It was critical while still staying respectful. We need more voices like that.
      As I mention at the end, we really ought to be aware that UA-cam videos provide a limited perspective because creators cannot include every mistake or stutter or the hundreds of hours staring at a textbook. Therefore, a viewer should not expect that they can also speak without stutters or pauses to think.

      I am learning multiple languages at the same time, and mostly prioritizing Dutch and Norwegian and Welsh at the moment, which are the prettiest and most refined languages ever with the most pretty and poetic words, just like English - I learned over 8.000 base words in Dutch and over 3.500 base words in Norwegian (and in Swedish) in just a few months, and about 500 words in Welsh as I started learning Welsh about 1 or 2 months ago, but not every day tho! It is possible to learn fast, but only for a few - it depends mostly on inteI and / or mentaI acuity and also on having a lot of time, and I have all three, and, I have all the time in the worId because I don’t do anything, so I spend all time watching videos and learning languages and commenting! I remember that a good point was made in a video about most not having enough time to really learn the actual language, because hum’ns work, and they also have to edit the videos and film etc, which takes many hours or even days, which is why most only learn the basics and the sentences and words that are usually asked / said instead of learning every single word / random words etc, so one doesn’t really learn the language (thousands or tens of thousands of words and idioms and sayings etc) and only learn a small part of the language based on the things that are said the most, and this explains why most questions and most answers and most sentences are very similar in all the languages that one says he speaks in pretty much every video one makes, and one tends to practice those very well!

    • @evefreyasyrenathegoddessev4016
      @evefreyasyrenathegoddessev4016 Рік тому

      The language learning trend was also started by the agcy, in order to create content to teach me the pretty / important languages, which is why most of the pretty languages have the best types of videos (well-explained and to the point and usually HD and entertaining to watch) that are meant to get me to fluency as fast as possible - and also to teach others / educate others in the process! As the agcy decided every move, and knowing all the tricks they taught the ones that make the content, for every group of famous ppl that teach languages learning or that say they can speak many languages fluently etc, the agcy also makes sure to get someone or a group of ppl that show those tricks to the viewers, and this goes for everything else, not just in the language learning community! So that is why some make that type of videos, and showing details that others haven’t noticed or thought about!

    What I found interesting to 'catch' fake polyglots in the act, is to introduce them to an extremely distinct or indistinguishable language that can only be accessed through resources like family relations.
    I tried this on a narcissist in my high school who had the intent of learning languages to be a jerk and cause dramas and rumors in my cohort, and told him to learn my mother's mother tongue, Tuwali. Though isn't endangered, but is hard to access through the internet or books. And he just used the most broken, obsolete and outdated version of the language that he found from online resources. Most of the stunt he tried to pull was just broken grammar and loan words from Ilocano.
    My observation is: if someone is truly trying to inspire you to learn languages, especially via online platforms like UA-cam, their intention is meant to inspire. Not to hog you into buying their 'whatever' subscription, or the suspicious use of repeated textbook phrases. Applaud efforts? Maybe. But I draw the line at claiming to speak a language that you're really very much beginner in - you know full well when someone says someone "speaks a language" they DON'T mean thy have a 100 word vocabulary and started last month. They MEAN, typically, basic proficiency, which would be on the order of a B2 level for European languages or HSK4 to 5 for Chinese. If you only know how to say "hi, my name is John, I live in America, I like pizza and apples, where is the bathroom, thanks, goodbye", sorry, but that's NOT what people mean and it's a lie, therefore, to mislead beginners into thinking you are better than you are. You MUST be able to hold a conversation to be telling the truth when you say you can "speak" a language. Anything less is at BEST a massive exaggeration.

    His real argument is not only that they can't really speak the languages, it that they can't really speak and then try to sell you products.
    Take Benny Lewis and Steve kaufmann, two of the biggest con men in Language learning. They started selling product to help teach others how to learn a language while they were still beginners. It took Steve 40 years to get to a lower intermediate level in Chinese and he still struggles with it. He's not a person anyone should listen to when it comes to language learning.
    How about Lao Shu, he never claimed to be more than a language learner. But how many foreign languages did he know Fluently? 0. He was fluent in ZERO foreign languages, yet selling a product to teach others how to learn a language.
    Yes, the "Fake Polyglot Hunter" may be a little off the wall, but I understand where his anger is coming from.
    You said: "There's nothing to gain by lying".
    Not true. Benny, Steve and others have been making money from their lies for years. They have gained a lot of money.

      Although I can understand your perspective, I still can't agree with the really generous premise you give him.
      I don't want to argue whether this guy or that guy speaks a language fluently enough. I do want to reject your assumption that someone needs to be fluent to speak publicly about language learning. I think every person from lesson 1 of A1 to totally fluent C2 has useful insight to share.
      If someone sells a useful tool that I, as the customer, think is valuable, I'll buy it. I'm not going to go through their videos with a fine-toothed comb to look for things to complain about.
      Should I spread hate about a watchmaker because he didn't carry a watch every single day? "This watchmaker is a conman because he didn't have the time memorized."

    • @MrX_TV
      @MrX_TV 2 роки тому +10

      @@studywithalex I think you dodge the question a bit here. You say "If someone sells a useful tool..." The reason we think the tool might be useful is that it's being promoted by someone that claims to have learned several languages by using it. If they haven't really done that then it's a scam.
      Most of the polygots I've watched are selling something Olly and Steve put out entertaining videos but they're clearly advertorials for books and subscription websites. In itself I don't think that constitutes "scamming". There is a grey area: UA-camrs must be self-promoters and "professional polyglots" need to earn a living. But you get beyond a grey area if you start making videos promoting these tools if:
      (a) you exaggerate their effectiveness; (b) imply/say it's how you learned when you used a different method; (c) deliberately avoid talking about other methods or tools you don't make money on; (d) exaggerate how many languages you know and to what level in order to make yourself seen more of an authority on language learning so you can shift more product.

    • @studywithalex
      @studywithalex  2 роки тому +9

      @@MrX_TV Well said! I think those four cases could be misleading.
      We ought to be aware that we are not getting the full story from anyone. I really like Olly's book series, but I do acknowledge that this is not the only way to improve my language. I can say that Olly is rebranding himself as "the book guy" and that is his niche. If you don't want to learn through short stories, that's fine; don't interact.
      I think case C is an unsolvable problem. It is impossible to promote one method of language learning while also always providing a disclaimer in every video that "this is one of many methods to learn a language and it might not work for everyone." I think that's common sense, and it is not scamming not to provide that obvious information. In an extreme example, bread companies don't need to claim this is only of many ways to get carbohydrates in your diet, and this bread may not be right for you. The consumer is not that dumb; we know that.
      Case A, B, and D that you mention are real and very misleading, and I don't support that at all.
      As it pertains to this video and "hunting fake polyglots," I do not think I have noticed it from the people he harasses, but I do agree with the principle that A, B, C, and D are cases we ought to have in the back of our minds at all times.

    A bit late to the party here (oops) but what I find mindboggling about this individual is that he could very well, if he wanted to, make occasional "takedown" videos of actual fake polyglots, or rather, he could point out in a concise & coherent way (while being friendly and critiquing in good faith of course) as to why a particular youtuber might be lying, or exaggerating their language skills.
    A great example of said critique/takedown of a fake polyglot, I would say, would be someone like Benny Lewis. From my experience of lurking over the years in language forums, reddit, youtube, etc, I have noticed how much he lied and exaggerated his language skills (and in quite a few cases, he literally scammed some people).
    When people would give him constructive criticism, he would often write back really nasty replies, often saying things like "I see you have been learning x language for 3 years but you still aren't at a high enough lvl, its not my fault you chose to use a terrible method rather than trying something else". He would constantly exaggerate his levels in certain languages, as well as lie about how long it took him to get to a high level, for instance, claiming he learned Egyptian Arabic to a B2 level in three months, or Hungarian to a B1 level in a similar amount of time.
    With all of this in mind (and my apologies for the huge body of text lol) I saw quite a few of this guys videos about Benny Lewis (I couldnt get through them all, rather I skipped through them cause they were so painful to watch) and I was expecting him to shed light on some of the many instances where Benny lied about his skills/the time it took him to learn x language, but literally there was no valid criticism in sight, literally nothing, just him yelling "FAKE FAKE FAKE, SCAM SCAM SCAM, EDITED VIDEO SEE HE EDITED VIDEO! FAKE POLYGLOT".
    Like I think it isn't an exaggeration to say that all of this dudes videos are more or less the same, just a bunch of rage and incoherency. He could have easily made a 10 min or so video of him critiquing some1 like Benny Lewis, or Nathaniel Drew explaining step by step as to why and how they are not real polyglots, or how they are lying to their audiences.
    Anyways, I just wanted to say thank you for this video! I really enjoyed it, and felt that you had a very concise takedown of this this very sad and spiteful individual, and I cannot wait to check out your other videos! Subbed! (also my apologies again for the really long text lol)

One place that allot of Scandi people lack in is the speaking part, I did allot better than my peers due to growing up in a bilingual household (My mom could speak Swedish and English, my dad spoke English and we used purely English at home).
    It also helps that Swedes get so much media from the USA, in that regards you will be hard pressed to find someone that if not fluent is at least has very good understanding of English. Lastly, it's a generational thing. Boomers and older people struggle hard with this, mainly cause they didn't learn English growing up.

Nowadays, I see that people are very, very concerned on things like: "you have an accent", "this is not the way we say it in x country (but deep inside they understood what people meant to say)", "no, the correct pronunciation is... (but the so called mistake is almost imperceptible)."
    Many people from many countries speak at least 2 local languages and many of them also know English. Many Indians can surprise us when we see that they speak Hindi, Marathi, Tamil... Many people from Central Asia speak their native language, Russian, and many of them speak Turkish too. Why would it be uncommon or a surprise to see someone claiming to speak 4 or 5 or 6 languages? We can say he did the mature thing by responding calmly and kindly, but he’s also enabling the other guy to pursue his harassment, while in the meantime leaving the possibility lingering that he actually really is a fake polyglot
    I also disagree with your take on polyglots reading from scripts
    Of course there’s nothing wrong about having notes, but still, first that has norhing to do with acting, that comparison makes no sens, and even if it would, it would be more detrimental to your point than beneficial, because polyglots are not actors, and they are not acting when they do a live stream or even a youtube video
    And also, you can very easily read “fluently” a language that you are familiar with, even if you can’t actually speak it
    I can’t speak Italian, but I am familiar with the language, and I can speak French and Spanish fluently, and with that, I can very easily read Italian with a decent accent and decent pronunciation, and trick people into believing I can speak fluently, even if I only understand 20% of what I am reading
    So his point is valid
    His methods and mindset are questionable, but his goal makes sens: There are a lot of fake polyglots out there scamming people, and he is right to confront them

      Your arguments are not good. Obviously people write scripts. But you know what he is getting at. If you claim to be proficient in a language you should be conversationally fluent. Thus able to speak the language without detailed prompts. It is obviously much easier to find phrases or even a speech and practice reciting it. To your acting example there are many actors who speak lines in a foreign language that they don't understand and would not be able to hold a similar conversation because they have been taught wrote recitation. Does that mean that because you have a script that you are a scammer? Of course not. It is also a skill which requires learning but it is not the same as being fluent in a language.
      It's a red flag when people take the most shallow possible version of an argument and refute that.

    That guy always torn off comments in his videos, probably because he doesn't want people tell him that he's always dishonest when he speaks about polyglot UA-camrs.

    Fake polyglot youtubers deserve to be exposed and lose money. No different than exposing a fake business guru or a snakeoil salesman. The guy may go beyond, of course 😂😂😂😂 but I know when the majority of youtube polyglots are lying, because, their lips are moving. 😂😂😂

    GREAT video, and a breath of fresh air -
    I've been watching videos of SO many countless fake polyglots making total asses of themselves, and you, Alex, are one of the few who has exposed them.
    It takes a person who is actually university educated in a foreign language to comprehend this. That's me.
    Those videos are comedy routines more than anything else, such as an Asian guy claiming to be from both Spain & Argentina because he can do a fake accent from each nation.
    I also saw a British guy doing fake accents from every region of Great Britain. That'd be not too different from a Puerto Rican guy claiming to be from both Texas and New York.

      Genuine polyglots are EXTREMELY few and very far between -
      When you learn a foreign language, if you can communicate as fluently as the average 15 year old kid, then you've surely "arrived" in some fashion; the problem ... ? MANY people claiming to be "fluent" can barely speak a foreign language as well as a 10 year old -
      Moreover, knowing a foreign includes many components and related skills, not all of which are equal to other skills. Ok, so we can speak: But can we comprehend virtually anything said to us? Or can we read the language well enough to understand a newspaper? If we need to write a simple note to somebody, are they likely to understand it? Is our pronunciation up to the point where we can be very easily understood by native speakers?
      Some skilled people here and there manage to fake it with superlative pronunciation, but their vocabulary may be virtually non-existent.
