    Greetings Alex. First timer here: this came up in my recommendations today. You've reminded me of another somewhat warped individual who used to put out videos denigrating other language-fanciers. It took me a while to remember his name, which was Christophe Clugston. Anyone remember him? His particular bêtes noires were Steve and Benny. By his own account he was a professional academic with a research qualification but his videos were both ridiculous and rather unsettling, probably on account of his other great passion which was Thai kickboxing. One got the distinct impression that he'd been kicked in the head once too often. I just checked and there are a few of his language and linguistics videos still knocking around, all over ten years old now. Occasionally his name used to come up in forum discussions and nobody could find any reference to him or any published work of his in academic journals. P.S. Thank you for alerting me to the correct pronunciation of Botes. I too have been saying Boats. My defence is that I have a very common Flemish surname which almost nobody pronounces or spells correctly, and the unwritten rule is that if you've got a name which everyone gets wrong then you're allowed to mangle other people's names with impunity.

    I grew up speaking Spanish in my household because my grandma didn’t allow us to speak English at home but of course I would speak English outside of my household… my Spanish was bad but got a bit better getting older with the grammar. Later my gma died and I stopped speaking the language. Irony, I moved to Mexico and my Spanish worsened because I was too embarrassed to speak my shitty Spanish to anyone. I just want to go back to speaking Spanish fr because it’s my blood language main and it hurts walking this earth not being able to speak to my people properly honestly 😭😭💀

To me it just seems like he cannot speak a language as good as he would like and just goes on and hate those who do something he would like to do and finds crazy answers to why they can. He also craves the attention they get...

    You tube is a haven for fakes and liers because they don’t require posters to prove their claims. I could post here that the moon is made out of cheese and you tube would do nothing about that lie. So as you read, keep in mind that this is the place where scamers practice their art.

    I’m Namibian (South-Africa’s neighbor), and my two native languages are also both English and Afrikaans. Lindie Botes has a normal Afrikaans accent. She is South-African. All us Afrikaans speaker grow up with English because English is one of South-Africa’s national languages and English is Namibia’s only national language, so we don’t “have to work hard to learn English”. What is the scam? Even if someone is exaggerating their skills online, that’s not a crime. A scam or crime is when someone is stealing money by deception, who is like “I speak 7 languages, give me a thousand dollars” 😂 Lying online isn’t a crime in of itself (not that I’m saying most of these people are lying, his “evidence” is dumb)

    Are you interesting in learning Belarusian or Southern Russian dialect/accent and/or Common Slavic vocabulary? I want to reach C1+ in ~Russian/East Slavic but I don't want to learn all the Russian slang words and endless synonyms so my plan is to use the common Slavic vocabulary, especially the verbs. Are you interested in seeing my research or assisting? Specifically I need help double checking my verb translations e.g. (говори́ть/го́вор vs. река́ть/речь vs. мо́(л)вить/мо́(л)ва.) Your knowledge in Bulgarian would be useful. 1 more thing, while learning German or French or Turkish or Japanese is interesting, and I want to learn Japanese too, your base in Bulgarian means that you could achieve very high fluency in Russian, more so than other language so it's the best for your buck. Also, I'm pretty sure all the high level technical stuff is the same or similar between Bulgarian and Russian.

    Honestly I just realised for the first time in my life that every single line you say is a brand new video. Every sentence is edited from one to the next... Its not a fault but I am saying this because actually I never noticed until you were talking about editing and I realise that your head is moving between every sentence.. My friend is a Video editor and told me its hard to go at least 2 minutes unedited. I just signed up for Preply and had to do a video and I didn't want to edit... It took me hours and hours just to get to a 1minute 59 second video I was okay happy with.. My point is you don't really recognise these things unless you are looking for them. About the guy, it's sad how he feels so bad about himself he does this - and online, that's what makes it really pathetic.

      @@studywithalex I challenge you to take the Clozemaster 10 languages 10 questions each challenge. Pick any 10 languages video yourself taking the challenge and inspire us. (whether you have studied are familiar with or not). This is a fun opportunity to showcase your talent with a little bit of humility proving you too are human and still a language learner. You can put the flags of the 10 languages you choose for the challenge in both the thumbnail and the title and tag the video as #takingtheclozemaster 10 languages challenge. While also tagging the languages of the challenge. When choosing from a diverse variety of languages consider this, to include some of those you're familiar with, those that you are not, and those that you will later learn. Choosing to include a conlang like Interlingua and an ancient language like Latin will keep the challenge diverse while bringing recognition to these languages (you may surprise yourself). Consider getting a hold of Clozemaster they may be interested in sponsoring the video. We as a community of language Learners need a challenge that we can all appreciate and try together. To get the most out of the video challenge adjust the settings as follows: put the skills to listening, the question count to 10, and the mode to multiple choice. Then you can adjust the account to dark mode (as it's more attractive) and the default speed to 75% for better hearing the questions. Doing a dry run will ensure all the settings are correct. Keep a notepad by your side to keep track of the language scores. Before you end the video it would be nice if you encouraged other polyglots and language Learners to take up the challenge. Buenas suerte Carpe Diem السلام عليكم

    You said there's nothing to gain from lying. Well, that is obviously not true. If you can speak 3 languages well, native, English and German, because you live in Germany (just an example). Then you learn French, and some Italian, because it's very close to French, and Dutch, which is similar to German. All of that is fine, Your languages range from A2 to C1. Then the fraud begins for some, which is learning the basics of different languages in the basis of one language per month or more. What you gain from that? Views=money. Half of Europeans could identify you're exaggerating or right down lying, but 80% of Americans would be none the wiser. If you learn 3 words of an Indian language, you'd get bazillions of views from Indians saying you speak excellent Bengali or Telugu.

    • @studywithalex
      @studywithalex 5 місяців тому

      That's true, but now you're heading more into the question is what is the definition of "speaking a language" because that person who speaks 3 words of Bengali or Telugu still speaks 3 more words of Bengali or Telugu than most Americans or Europeans, and C1 people are not the only people who are qualified to talk about the experience of learning.

    • @RogerRamos1993
      @RogerRamos1993 5 місяців тому

      @@studywithalex Speaking a language is different from being C1 in a language. I agree with you on that. However, words have meanings. If I speak a language below A2 level, I'd never dare to say I speak it. I would say I know some X language. In my case, I say I speak Portuguese (n), English, French and Italian. My spoken Italian is quite limited, but I can read almost effortlessly in Italian and understand almost everything I hear. I may or may not say I speak Spanish, which is a language that I learned without trying and being able to understand in songs and in literature from the get-go. I never speak Spanish though, and would most certainly transfer a lot of my Portuguese to it. German is a language that I am close to reach an A1 level, and I wouldn't say I speak, maybe a tiny bit, as now I am starting to be able to follow texts written in A1 or A2 levels. I've read a few books in Catalan, but I don't speak it. I've read a book in Neapolitan, but I don't speak it.

    • @studywithalex
      @studywithalex 5 місяців тому

      @@RogerRamos1993 I'm very much the same. I'm really careful with the words I use to describe my levels because we still live in this world where people take "speak" or "know" very seriously in language learning. I think we can blame some of this to the limited character count of UA-cam videos or social media posts that cannot express all the shades of gray you're describing.

    I've found that setting SMART goals (specific, measurable, etc) for long term goals doesn't work very well for me personally. So most of my goals are more of "dreams"/visions of improving in certain areas, even if they're vague, and then I work on short-term projects or challenges throughout the year that are SMART goals and that work towards 1 or more of those visions/dreams. For me, time goals especially are difficult to set and then follow-through, because it's so easy to over- or underestimate how busy I'll be and how much motivation I'll have throughout the year for certain languages, and if I get behind I find it really demotivating. I do set a few measurable goals, though, like trying to read a novel per month in Korean. All this to say -- I think different goal-setting styles work better for different people. I think knowing about SMART goals is important, and knowing what motivates or demotivates you personally is also important, and people should set their goals accordingly. I do agree that sometimes people set vague or just unrealistic "goals"(dreams) for the year and don't seem to have any idea of how they're going to get there. What kind of stuff do you usually do/watch for Korean? Just wondering because the amount you set (3 hours) makes me think it's not dramas, unless you just really space the eps out haha. I'm currently working on improving basically all aspects of my advanced Korean and reading/watching stuff in low-intermediate-ish Mandarin and Japanese on the side.

      I totally understand how SMART goals would not work for someone. It could make pressure and not allow flexibility. Your dreams and my time-bound goals aren't that far off. At the end of the day, it's just a statement of dedication that you'll push yourself further in whatever realm you want. TBH, a lot of my Korean listening last year was like random UA-cam videos of like a Korean person vlogging or like a non-episodic cartoon in Korean. In general, in any language, I'm not into series with a throughline. That works for me, and it accumulates to quite a lot of listening. Good luck on Korean, Japanese, and Mandarin! ❤

    I met all my language goals in speaking and understanding Welsh and Irish, but my (much more modest) writing goals in both languages fell by the wayside. I still count it as a win though, as I had a much more unsettled year than I expected and you can't help it if real life intrudes in ways you couldn't have anticipated.

      Absolutely. The biggest issue to the language learner is life. 😆 If I could pause time, bills, health, responsibilities, I would be FLUENT.

    2:28 That's one of my main reasons for wanting to learn languages, studying Spanish and Russian right now. Being able to talk to the people in a country you move to or visiting unlocks so much more opportunities than not being able to talk to them at all. When it comes to "minority" languages, I already speak Swedish fluently. Want to learn Korean, Finnish, Turkish and Estonian at some point.

    The more I listen and hear about Sam, the more he sounds like a language channel version of DarkSydePhil (don't look it up unless you enjoy torturing yourself).

    1:48 Having great English is quite common in Scandinavia, English has been one of the "required subjects" for quite some time now. One place that allot of Scandi people lack in is the speaking part, I did allot better than my peers due to growing up in a bilingual household (My mom could speak Swedish and English, my dad spoke English and we used purely English at home). It also helps that Swedes get so much media from the USA, in that regards you will be hard pressed to find someone that if not fluent is at least has very good understanding of English. Lastly, it's a generational thing. Boomers and older people struggle hard with this, mainly cause they didn't learn English growing up. Edit: I was expecting Sam to be an actual Dane, not some half-mongrel "kebabsvarvare". He's just as Danish as the Turkish yoghurt is greek just because I changed the labels.

    I feel like he's similar to Nikocado Avocado. Truly deranged content but also so fascinating at the same time.
