Third Abandoned Railroad Crossing with Signals Folded

  • This is the third abandoned railroad crossing (it never had gates but the signals are folded up) on the last 12 miles of the CSX Homestead Subdivision. This historic railway was built in 1926 by Seaboard Air Line to bring tourism to the area via a passenger line and connect to the overseas railroad with the FEC tracks that ran parallel to US 1 which eventually went into the Florida Keys and Key West (First train to arrive in Key West was 1912). Ironically, the Homestead Sub only lasted as a passenger line for 3 years, 1926-1929 and then was converted into freight until its demise. SAL eventually became Seaboard Coast Line then Seaboard Systems and finally CSX. This line played a vital role in the development of Miami and South FL as we know it.

How such a sight can be simultaneously amazing and depressing never fails to blow my mind! Still hoping this line gets revived either as commuter service or a rail trail someday.
I couldn’t tell you about the electronic bells, except to say that we’ve got them up here too. Call me old-fashioned, but I like the mechanical bells better-I will NEVER get used to how the e-bells cut off in the middle of a ring as the lights shut off.
P.S. I’m South Carolina lowcountry on my mom’s side of the family-remind me to tell you about the door/front porch ceiling color “Haint Blue” someday!

So this is one that they will change into a trail for people jogging, biking or walking. They are used up here on the once was W&OD line in northern Virginia. If they don't use the tracks anymore then these trails are the perfect thing for them to be used for. Be careful crossing those streets, there are a lot of crazy drivers now. Good to see your videos again. Thanks for your views and history of the tracks. Take care my friend. :-))
