As a Walmart Bobby fisher that was swallowed by a talking carnivorous whale, and then solved a chess puzzle to save mine and many other people's life's, I see this video as an absolute win.
At 4:40, is there anything actually wrong with a8=Q+ ? I calculated Kb6 Qb8+ Kc6 Rxc2 Rc1 Qxb2 and it seems like white is winning, just not as quickly as the line you showed.
3:15 The king can move left, and then the rook has not choice but to check the king at the same file as the queen, which lets the queen take it, and the black king more squares to move.
MARTIN CHALLENGE: You can only take Martin's pieces if they're attacked twice, or your pieces are cautious and will only move to take a piece if they'll end up defended in that square.
6:40 In the forth episode, the whale spits the three fishermen onto the shore of an Island. There they meet a Japanese soldier with a samurai's sword, who believes that the second world war still goes on and who only let them go, if they solve a go puzzle. No, I'm joking, if they solve a chess puzzle.
Looking up that pawn and rook pattern to find this study, I found an interesting one by Tigran Gorgiev, Schakend Nederland 1966-1967 (published January 1967), 3rd commendation (number 806 in the magazine EG, so that should be a very early issue). Maybe you want to look at that one, I can imagine our heroes could enjoy it.
There's one other line that you didn't cover and which looks like a win for black. If after Rc1, black doesn't waste a move with b2, but instead immediately goes after white's pawn, white must run with it to avoid losing it but then black can escape. Rc1; Ka5 a7; Kb6
@@Rocky64 If white queens, black takes the rook. White can then only afford one move that is not check, otherwise black also queens and is a whole rook up.
Since they're on an island, I guess Bobby and the other Fischermen won't be meeting up with Stockfishus Giganticus. Christopher Moore has written a funnier story about people getting swallowed by a whale. The first move for the next puzzle appears to be the amazing 1. Ba1!
BTW, after we play king c3 in the main line, what about if the king goes back up to a4? We can't go back to c4 or we're just going to repeat moves so we have to make a queen, but then I don't see an easy checkmate even if white should eventually be able to win.
After Rook D4, King B3, and if Rook B4 (only check that can't be captured by the queen), King A3. Only two checks can be captured by the queen... But Queen to B3 is still stalemate! 😮 Damn.
I am missing something, I'm sure... If at the 3:08 mark, the king moved to c3, the rook could not move to d3 without being captured by the queen. And the black king could move, so it wouldn't be a stalemate, would it? I must be missing something, given that I'm an extremely novice player. Let me look at it again... EDIT- thank you to the person below for pointing out that if the white king moves to c3, the rook goes to c4 and does a reverse pin.

Sorry, but no, you couldn’t really live inside a whale. 1) Whales, like other mammals, have a digestive system where the stomach contains hydrochloric acid and bile. At best, this would be unpleasant, to say the least, at worst, well - let’s not get that graphic - this is a channel about chess, not biology, after all. 2) Then there’s breathing. You’ll need air. Also, Whales can dive pretty deep. I hope you can hold your breath a long time. Oh, and then there’s Nitrogen Narcosis, not to mention, “the bends”. Just ask any Scuba diving instructor. Please, kids, don’t try this at home. 🤣 Do try solving the chess puzzles; it’s a lot safer!

Not for nothing, John can be a pleasure to read in its own right!
This fisherman puzzle thing is so much fun 😋.Bobby Fischer’s fisherman version = Bobby Fischerman 😂
The stories add a certain charm to these videos.
For anyone wondering, I've played the position on 2:45 if Qc3+ for 50 moves, but it's a perpetual check, but not checkmate
thats the whole point. That line does end in a draw which is why you have to cut the king off first
3:15 The king can move left, and then the rook has not choice but to check the king at the same file as the queen, which lets the queen take it, and the black king more squares to move.
Only b3 and b2. B5 allows check without protection from the Queen.

Good one
4:46 doesn't a8Q or Rc7 (following the other move) also win?
3:10 Kb3, rb4, and Ka3 allows the queen to stop the rook without stalemate
If Kb3 then Rd3. The Queen could not take the rook.
@@sieevansetiawan4792 You mean Rb3?
6:32 audio glitch when you queue the music I think
At 4:50 , Kc5 is unnecessary.
White can just promote a pawn a8Q+ and then take black pawn on c2
a8=Q is still winning, but Kc5 leads to a faster mate.
3:35 underpromote to a rook
White can't really do that; it ruins some of the other lines. And if Black ever gets a breather, he's got two pawns which will become queens.

If after Rc1, black doesn't waste a move with b2, but instead immediately goes after white's pawn, white must run with it to avoid losing it but then black can escape.
Rc1; Ka5 a7; Kb6
