Soulcalibur II on the PS2 supports progressive scan (525p) through component, at least that's what it says on the backcover of the Japanese version of the game as well as Tekken 4.
@@fernandopereira6445 yes all versions of SC2 support progressive scan. Also, the Dreamcast launched in Japan in 1998 with SC1 releasing there 8 months later which only made SC1 a US launch title by proxy.
@GTgo Ahead of its time really, it was the first home console to do on-line gaming and it brought most of the near dying arcade scene (in the UK at least) into the home console market. Sometimes even bettering it, case in point, Soul Calibur. Spectacular display of coding from Namco. Pity Sega couldn’t pull off the same with VF3 instead of farming the job out to Genki. Still, it did the job… just.
@@marcosribeiro2518 Tekken 5,god of war, devil may cry 3...
I loved SC for the Dreamcast and I always liked the brighter effects on the weapons, but I think scenarios are more complex in SC2, perhaps because the Soul Calibur 1 were very influenced by the arenas of Soul Blade 1, very prone to ring-outs. Also, Soul Calibur was a Dreamcast exclusive, so we'll never know how it looked on the PS2.
it would look ugly in the texture department ps2 ha the worse graphics of that gen it lost to every console in graphics often having cut down versions of games but fanboys kept it alive by lying about 300 bit graphics 😂
Again the the PS2 was so overhyped. The DC could keep up quite nicely. Regarding SC2 if the DC would of had the sequel im sure the comparison would be very close indeed. I'm pretty sure the DC had plenty more to give technically. Unfortunately it didn't get the support it deserved.
DC holds up well, it was the perfect SC in my mind! Of course, SC 2 shows more geometry details in the stages, better lightinhg and some effects like cube bump maps. However, the art direction is occasionally a bit weaker and some textures on the ground look fuzzy. You can tell it is the same engine slightly improved.
I think a more accurate comparison for the Dreamcast release of Soul Calibur is the PlayStation 2 version of Tekken Tag Tournament. Both were Namco titles that ran on the System 12 board - essentially souped-up PlayStation 1 hardware - in arcades and were ported to more powerful next-gen consoles and thus could have better graphics. Soul Calibur II was made on the System 246 Board which is almost identical to the PlayStation 2 and as a result it shows much more complex character model, lighting and geometric detail than its predecessor. Soul Calibur on Dreamcast has some advantages with regards to image quality, but everything being displayed is less complex. It still has fine art direction and lots of color, so it will always be nice to look at.
One thing i notice is the Dreamcast use mipmapping on the ring's floor textures while ps2 Soul Calibur 2 doesn't. The Dreamcast textures look beautiful but i feel the character's still look somewhat "squarish". Soul Calibur 2 characters don't convince me neither but they look more "high polygon"'. Soul Calibur 2 seems to use more complex lightning and shadows with characters casting self shadows.
I don't think that's mipmapping. It looks like DC is using basic bilinear filtering, which is why textures at an angle and farther from the camera look blurry. PS2 seems to be using some basic form of anisotropic filtering, so textures still retain some sharpness regardless of angle from the camera.
@@RetrOrigin but that is what mipmapping does, right? It blurs the textures from a distance from the camera to avoid texture shimmering or jaggyness. In Soul Calibur 2 the arena is using more geometric detail like loose bricks or floor tiles, while on DC is just a plain texture ( but a high quality texture). The ps2 hardware also supports mipmapping but lots of developers didn't use it. May be because the blurry look as you said.
@@jsr734 mipmaps are just lower resolution versions of the same texture (stored within the texture itself) They may indeed look blurrier due to the lower resolution, but in this particular case it looks more like a side effect of the angle at which we're looking at them from the camera. The reason I believe this is the case is simply because the closer the camera is to the ground, the blurrier the floor gets. if you have access to older PC games that still offer the option to choose between bilinear, trilinear and anisotropic filtering you will basically see the same results. I think many developers avoided mipmapping on PS2 just to save VRAM. The PS2 does not support hardware texture compression (DC does) so textures in general utilize much more VRAM. Later on developers found ways to compress textures by using its multi-texture capabilities. They basically saved each texture twice, once at it's original resolution but in gray scale and a low resolution version of the same texture in color. When rendered, the gray scale hi-res texture pulls color data from the low res version and with this textures end up taking roughly the same amount of VRAM as a hardware compressed texture.
@@jsr734 The Power VR2 on the Dreamcast is a deferred rendered. Is not a true GPU per say as it lacks hardware T&L. Because of this all graphics data needs to be ready on VRAM before rendering a scene, which includes both mesh/geometry data and textures. This is why most Dreamcast games on average only allocate about 5MB worth of textures and 3MB or so to geometry (about 3 million polygons per second) The PS2 does not really have dedicated VRAM, but instead is designed to store graphics data on its main 32MB pool of RAM. is not exactly the same model as shared memory but for all intents and purposes it does the same thing. On top of that the Graphics Synthesizer also an extra 4MB integrated into it intended to cache whatever is on screen at the moment.
@@mayconwilliam600 DREAMCAST bem times concorrente direto caralho, play 1 ? 64 ?
I always liked those weapon demonstrations. The colors on Dreamcast look more vibrant. Noticeable on Xianghua's pants being more eye catching. While on the Ps2 they appear drab and worn. Also the Dreamcast looks better in motion. However I did have to slow the footage down to .25 speed to really notice a difference.
The Dreamcast soul calibur was more revealing than the PS2 soul calibur 2 and plus it was still the nineties when the Sega Dreamcast was barely emerging
The Dreamcast and PS2 SoulCalibur games both look good graphically. But the PS2 version has a slightly higher polycount in the 3d models, and better graphics in some areas. The dreamcast SoulCalibur, has better image quality over the PS2 version, smoother animations, and better graphics in some areas too. Being an animator for over 10 years, I noticed in this vid, and from watching the weapons demonstrations from both games in real life, that the motion capture and animations for the kata's, are smoother in the dreamcast version, and a bit janky in the PS2 version. You can see a few missing frames of animation, in the PS2 version, when the characters do their weapons demonstration.
Wish there was a way to combine the art styles. The vivid colors and lighting of the Dreamcast really pop, and make everything look way more dramatic and surreal - it represents nothing except for itself. The PS2 is more artistically ambitious, but that means it's easier to compare it to other mediums.
SC II might be better in char models , weapons , details and some Soul Charge particle effects but loved how in SC I the stages environment looks better than SC II for example in Xiaghua stage the blossom petals still touches the floor and has an good excuse to leave the ring due to wind or both fighters moving , Mi - Na stage shows some better darkness with smog effects specially the torch lights and also good details on Yoshi s stage smog or the river breeze of the canal as examples and finally Hwang stage with that wind and sand effect looking great also
probably component. But the dreamcast 480p quality by vga is superior to PS2/GC and Xbox 480p component cable, although not comparable to real 1080i resolution and 720p HD on xbox.
I think the first thing a lot of people would notice is the use of mipmaps on Dreamcast, ps2 shimmers a lot due to the fact they aren’t used at all, but ps2 has a lot more going on in the scene- mainly with particles and effects
Both look truly impressive, however each has weaknesses and strengths, for example, the PS2 has a greater number of polygons and elements on the screen, as well as dynamic lighting that helps a lot. For its part, the DC looks sharper and has some better textures, likewise the first part has a great personality in itself. However, the announcer's voice and the music in general are better in SC2... both highly recommended for any collector. 😍❤🌞
Banjo Ginga was the original Astaroth, Ryuzaburo Otomo took over in the Japanese Version since Soul Calibur II. I forgot that Taki's name is written in Katakana. Yoshimitsu's Second Costume is weird in Soul Calibur II. I still want a Soul Calibur Collection in the future someday.
Yeah, its kind of crazy that we only have 2.5 years of dreamcast development and compare its games to games on systems that had way longer development time. Then say that it's better than dreamcast.
A common mistake with this notion is improvements are not necessarily attributed to time but understanding of the hardware. Most developers were simply not familiar with the PS2’s unusual/complex architecture which is why there is a more drastic difference between it’s earliest and latest AAA games. But there are early exceptions like MGS2 and Gran Turismo 3. Dreamcast/NAOMI hardware was mostly very well understood from it’s release. The overall best showcase is perhaps Shenmue II which the Dreamcast clearly struggles with performance in crowded and detailed areas of the game. Even if big budget AAA games continued to release for Dreamcast in 2003 they most likely would not have fared any better. If there’s any Sega platform that had significant untapped potential, it would be the Saturn. Regardless, a native Soul Calibur game on Dreamcast/NAOMI (like DOA2) would be interesting to see.
@@alexpace1783 I get it but Shenmue series was developed by the same creators of the hardware, hence, the knowledge. I'm pretty sure Namco, Capcom or Konami, or even western studios like Bizarre Creations could do a much better job with 2 or 3 more years developing Dreamcast games.
I wonder if it would be possible to mod SCII characters into SC Dreamcast definitely thinking Link 🧐 Great comparison I have no doubt SCII would have performed well on Dreamcast
Not really fair, there are 4 years of difference. A 2003 game on Dreamcast would have looked better than the original Soul Calibur (even if the resolution and image quality are already superior as it is).
I agree though In a way I also think it shows how well SoulCalibur and the DC held up even in light of SoulCalibur 2 on the other platforms. Would had been interesting to see SoulCalibur 2 on DC if the system stuck around longer.
True and also according to dev interviews on they were holding back on Dreamcast, especially on the poly counts. Since SC on Dreamcast was experiment of what the team can do with modern hardware. They modeling on the characters on dreamcast use less than 4,500 polygons.
@@waterheart95 To be fair, the deadline wasn't the most forgiving, and they were simply upgrading an arcade game - at the time, nobody questioned that these were the best graphics in a home console game, by far.

Dreamcast is amazing and will always have a special spot in my life. But the PS2 version...it just takes your breath away. And I am not even considering Soul Calibur 3...

I played Soul Calibur II to death on PS2, but was more intrigued by the breadth and depth of the game. I actually prefer DC's Soul Caibur, however. Perhaps it because it showcased how 128-bit games should look, as it was undoubtedly stunning for its time. Also, there was something so much more immediate and addictive about the first game. I definitely preferred it.
I played both back in the day, and on a CRT, the Dreamcast version trounced the ps2 visually. The Dreamcast looked sharp and vibrant, whereas although more detailed, the ps2 looked dull on colours and blurry. Those that have played both on CRT I’m sure will mostly agree!
More geometry/triangles on the PS2 version, while not like for like stages, the PS2 stages appears to have more lights. On the flipside the Dreamcast image is almost pristine. Textures are sharper, appears to be running in slightly higher res, and I like the Dreamcast colors better. This one it depends on your taste, but for my dollar I'll take the Dreamcast as the PS2 looks muddy and drabbed.
@@ViciousAlienKlown I own all systems but didn't buy the PS2 until late 2004 for Metal Gear Solid 3. With that said the PS2 graphics always appeared muddy to me. I had a Samsung 32 inch 1080I CRT and the PS2 looked bad on it. A lot of PS2 games hi res mode is 512X384 if I'm not mistaken so they can either look a tab soft, or a tad too much AA. On the flipside the PS2 could process geometry like nobody business, but was limited by ram to typically 128X128 8bit color textures.
same situation I was mad when dreamcast died I got a ps2 hooked up to my tv and was disgusted with the graphics it was a ugly looking downgrade to see poor image quality it look dirty and rough to me you called it the muddy look its bad😂 I couldnt understand how it killed dreamcast with graphics like that then xbox came out and it was like a generational leap coming from ps2 better everything except particles ps2 wins with particles
@southsidetherealest2860 Very few PS2 games looked good to me. Even the games with progressive scan looked dirty. A lot of PS2 games didn't use mipmapping (this was also typical of Sega AM2 group) and often lowered the color depth from 32 to 16 bit. Early PS2 games didn't use AA at all and would often use 512X384, 512X224, 640x448 resolutions. All are memory saving techniques at the cost of image clarity. What the PS2 was good at was moving around large amounts of low res textures and triangles, but with poor PQ.
Just decided to lookup up SC2 for shitz n gigglez. I didn't know it was remastered or re released on PS2. The fps look smoother, the characters look better, the arenas and backgrounds are more creative and have more depth. Yes, some detail advances were made but the original concepts and ingenuity are more prevalent in the DC version
Stylistically DC stages are way better despite more complex textures on PS2. I prefer the contrast of colors that makes the character stand out in DC SC, rather than the drab overdone lack of distinction in SC 2.
I like the ps2 version only cause it had a some that gritty look in some of the arenas and during that time i felt ps2 had More details then the DC version but overall Both version are good imo would if i could go back in time i probably would of gotten the DC version anyways lol
The PS2-game is newer and so has many advantages visually over the older DC-game, especially background 3d-elements and textures look better on PS2. Only thing DC has over the PS2 is that it seems like on PS2, they did not include proper Mip-Mapping, thus you get a lot of texture shimmering and pixel crawling in the distance, which is pretty ugly. But DC is not flawless in this department as well, since instead of shimmering pixels, you get very blurry and over-filtered textures in the distance at flat angles (like on the floor) since no anisotropic filtering was present. But man... venice stage looks soooo good on DC!
man, oh man, lighting looks great on the Ps2...but that aliasing? Simply garbage. Definite pluses for both, its pretty easy to see the best of the underrated console for sure. Hopefully they just keep making this game for all systems!
Considering Namco already released System 246 and Tekken 4 by that time, I fail to see why they would’ve used any other arcade board at the time for SC2, unless you can prove it.
Dreamcast is higher resolution, and overall less pixelated. There's also a number of detail the DC nails a lot better: For example, notice how Killik's staff bends a bit with the motion, while on SC2 for the PS2 it's all stiff.
In reality while sc 2 has better textures everywhere, sc 1 looks way better simply because dreamcast and output via vga and ps2 at best does component.
textures in soulcaliber lack colors vs sc2 on the ps2,also more polygons on the screen on ps2.better resolution and filtering on dreamcast .gameplay= soulcaliber,sc on dc has better music and plays faster as wel maybe better framerate and better animations, rare to see a ps2 game with so good textures.
DC SC looks better even despute the textures. Colors pop. Style is better. Resolution better. Graphical differences negligible, except for textures. For some reason, despite PS2 textures, features in stages are less complex at some points. Why?
The PS2 is better, but it doesn’t seem like a generational leap. I’m sure of the Dreamcast had the sales to last a few years longer, it would have gotten a version of this too, would looks similar with maybe less effects, but sharper visuals, and we would have all been treated to one of the golden axe characters making an appearance.
Totally The dreamcast version was release in 1999 and was not a full dreamcast optimised but a arcade boost If it was exclusively made for dreamcast it would have been more textured then soul calibur 2 on ps2 ( this version was release 4 years later)
Dreamcast owners got this at launch in 1999. Plus the resolution is better.

Textur ram dc 8mb > ps2 4mb
Dreamcast can do textures better than PS2. PS2 textures were never a strong point. Some PS2 games even lacked textures that Dreamcast version had.
it would look ugly in the texture department ps2 ha the worse graphics of that gen it lost to every console in graphics often having cut down versions of games but fanboys kept it alive by lying about 300 bit graphics 😂

I perfer the art direction in 1 too. 1 and 2 are the best looking in the series in my opinion
Lighting is better in sc 1 along with the textures
2 is better, but it’s insane how well 1 holds up to this day.
The #1 arcade smash only in Dream Cast... the best version
I loved this game with all I had... Started on Soul Blade, simply unforgettable !!!
I love how sharp the image on dreamcast..even on emulators games like RE CV look better
Soul calibur better game then tekken tag

Interesting comparison VCDECIDE. Could you also consider doing Tekken Tag (PS2) vs Tekken 4? It’s a similar situation.
When rendered, the gray scale hi-res texture pulls color data from the low res version and with this textures end up taking roughly the same amount of VRAM as a hardware compressed texture.
but, as I understand it, hardware compression/decompression saves you memory in the main RAM not VRAM.That's why the Dreamcast has 8MB of video RAM.
@@jsr734 The Power VR2 on the Dreamcast is a deferred rendered. Is not a true GPU per say as it lacks hardware T&L. Because of this all graphics data needs to be ready on VRAM before rendering a scene, which includes both mesh/geometry data and textures. This is why most Dreamcast games on average only allocate about 5MB worth of textures and 3MB or so to geometry (about 3 million polygons per second)
The PS2 does not really have dedicated VRAM, but instead is designed to store graphics data on its main 32MB pool of RAM. is not exactly the same model as shared memory but for all intents and purposes it does the same thing. On top of that the Graphics Synthesizer also an extra 4MB integrated into it intended to cache whatever is on screen at the moment.
I'd have liked to see Soul Calibur 2 on Dreamcasst

I always liked those weapon demonstrations. The colors on Dreamcast look more vibrant. Noticeable on Xianghua's pants being more eye catching. While on the Ps2 they appear drab and worn. Also the Dreamcast looks better in motion. However I did have to slow the footage down to .25 speed to really notice a difference.
Soul calibur is a system 12 game and DC's port only improves it, so the stages are very empty next to SC2 or even Dead or Alive 2.

Dang wtf I didn't know they just recused the same weapon demonstration animations for SC2. That's pretty neat!

About the graphics visuals, are you using composite or component cable in PlayStation 2?
probably component.
Particles are actually BETTER in Soul Calibur compared to Soul Calibur 2!
ps2 was horrible at mip mapping thats why 99 percent of ps2 games have dry dirty looking textures
I still have my Dreamcast somewhere and Soul Calibur too. I loved that game so much it was beautiful too. I hope it still works.❤

Not really fair, there are 4 years of difference. A 2003 game on Dreamcast would have looked better than the original Soul Calibur (even if the resolution and image quality are already superior as it is).

It comes down to what system you owned and when. This was on the Dreamcast in 1999 and the ps2 version was around 2003.

Nope. Ps2 Is soulcalibur 2
even tho SC2 is graphically better overall (SC3 is as well) DC SC1 at the time was the best looking console game of all time up to that point.
Stylistically DC stages are way better despite more complex textures on PS2. I prefer the contrast of colors that makes the character stand out in DC SC, rather than the drab overdone lack of distinction in SC 2.
ps2 has more details but is to blurry... i like the DC version
I like the ps2 version only cause it had a some that gritty look in some of the arenas and during that time i felt ps2 had
More details then the DC version but overall Both version are good imo would if i could go back in time i probably would of gotten the DC version anyways lol
@@Rhinestone_Radio two different games. Dreamcast had soulcalibur 1 exclusive to that system. Soulcalibur 2 was released for xbox, gamecube and ps2.
PS2 looks amazing in prog scan mode, ditto the DC using vga
I like both of em
❤️❤️
man, oh man, lighting looks great on the Ps2...but that aliasing? Simply garbage. Definite pluses for both, its pretty easy to see the best of the underrated console for sure. Hopefully they just keep making this game for all systems!
Originally soul calibur 2 its planned for naomi.
Considering Namco already released System 246 and Tekken 4 by that time, I fail to see why they would’ve used any other arcade board at the time for SC2, unless you can prove it.
@@alexpace1783 yes
The Dreamcast graphics are a little less detailed, but seem much deeper. Dreamcast is the winner.
The backgrounds from PS2 but the characters from Dreamcast.
Dreamcast is higher resolution, and overall less pixelated. There's also a number of detail the DC nails a lot better: For example, notice how Killik's staff bends a bit with the motion, while on SC2 for the PS2 it's all stiff.
Nothing compares to Dreamcast.
I love the Dreamcast but the PS2 has more geometry, better lighting effect, & sharper textures.
DREAMCAST was GOAT !!
Totally
The dreamcast version was release in 1999 and was not a full dreamcast optimised but a arcade boost
If it was exclusively made for dreamcast it would have been more textured then soul calibur 2 on ps2 ( this version was release 4 years later)
Less effects? The myth that the PS2 has stronger hardware will last forever, I guess?
Dreamcast pra mim é melhorzin
