GMAN’s 5 Crankbait Tips for Early Prespawn Bass
Вставка

- Gerald Swindle relies on crankbaits to find and trigger prespawn bass on rivers and reservoirs. We connected with him on the Tennessee River to learn how and where he fishes crankbaits during late winter's high and dirty water, as bass start thinking about the prespawn. *Additional product links at the bottom.

Swindle (wired2.fish/Sw...) shares 5 tips that run the gamut from how and where bass position, why finesse balsa crankbaits are the best lures to start with, and how to fish the baits to get the most bites possible:
GMAN's 5 crankbait tips for late winter and early spring bass:
1. Target current breaks. Late winter and early spring see an uptick in water levels and a corresponding dirtying of the water. Current on rising water helps position bass in predictable spots such as in the eddies behind boulders, slack water behind points, and other current deflection.
2. Use finesse balsa crankbaits. Swindle has better success starting with smaller crankbaits with a subtler action. He usually begins by targeting shallow water with a balsa flat-sided crankbait, making sure to contact cover throughout the retrieve. The best baits are fairly neutrally buoyant or a slow rise, keeping them in the strike zone longer -- similar to jerkbaits, this can be key to getting bites in cold water.
3. Make constant bottom contact. Current-influenced bass hug tight to the bottom and any key cover elements. Cold, dirty water keeps the strike window narrow, so make sure to get your bait where it counts and keep it there. As mentioned above, crankbaits with neutrally buoyant or slow rise characteristics help keep the lure where it counts. Incorporate pauses pulls and interact with the structure and cover as the bait collides and careens over it.
4. Have several crankbaits pre-rigged. Experiment with running depths to find different populations of fish. Swindle follows up a shallow cranking pass with a deeper diver to work adjacent edges and flats. An 8- to 10-foot diver works a highly productive depth zone and allows you to maintain easy bottom contact during a more significant duration of the retrieve than a 4- to 6-foot diving bait. Bottom line, have subtle shallow and mid-depth baits at the ready.
5. Use a light rod setup. Skin-hooking bass is common in cold water, so Swindle opts for a light power rod with a slower taper to combat tearing hooks out. Straight fluorocarbon in the 10- to 12-pound test range is ideal for hitting max running depth.

Man he ain’t lying about the location of the current break. Did this exact thing Monday and absolutely loaded the boat on chickamauga. Boated 21 bass all over 2 pounds with the DT-6 in demon of course.
Good cb bite is so fun...
Man I had a blast!! Best winter time fishing in years! Found some sparse grass back in a pocket off the main channel it was ON!
@@The_Bass_Stunters got a thirty pound bag in one hour on a a public lake in Cali about two years ago.Caught back to back 7 plus lol Now I'm an official cb grinder and have some of my best years ever .Expensive habit tho lol ,old snagged line under water has become my enemy🤬
What color demon ?

He there for the buffet. Just on edge of current. Food comes to him.
As good as it gets. Could watch G fish for hours and never not be entertained
Imagine being our lucky as*es being able to film him. Hard to keep the camera steady!
@@Wired2Fish LoL 😂 I can just imagine

I Got myself some Tiny minis OG 4, The other day to try out and I caught two on kinda cold days just small dinks but can't wait to catch a bigger fish on it
I got hooked on the slim 6 last fall! Mini ott… sign me up. 🙂
Ott looks like happy Gilmore in his happy place, blowing the saw dust off that crankbait 😆
Just getting back into fishing and I have so much to relearn! Thanks for the education!!!
A great video thanks
You got it G-Man!
Looks like Nickajack, I've caught many off that point!
Thanks good stuff👍
Love me some speed clips too G 😂 especially when I’ve been on the lake for 6 hours and I am lost like hillbilly in a Chinese airport. The DT’s are great. The smaller sizes have always had a little bit better action to me. Im a strike king fanatic, but I do keep a couple DT’s in the box for just in case.
Thanks for sharing! Love the airport reference 😆.
Man gotta try the smaller Hybrid Hunter in grass and the new Chic Magnet damn they catch ‘em.
I got a Plano Edge 3700 Deep full of Hybrid Hunters. Took a year to get them in, and for good reason. I had a good laugh last weekend when one of the Elite Series guys said that’s how he’d caught them at Harris. Good thing I already got $200 worth of them cause they just got harder to buy. Chic Magnet is everything you love about the OG, but it casts much much better, and it doesn’t hang nearly as easily. I’m working on a stash of them but I’ve got a couple missing some paint thanks to a few Toledo Bend brush pile pigs.
Listen to him talk is like going to the fair, lol. He must have worked some booths in between fishing seasons.
What size clips are you using on your crankbaits, thank you...
I wonder if Ott is gonna rename it "Mini" ? Lol 🤣
It's all about finding em ...
Is it really about the lure or your ability to find fish. I feel like when I'm on the fish I could throw any lure in any color and they will bite.
There's a spot on Henry Neely that in front of my work right up from the boat ramp on the left I've seen G-man fishing I fish it on lunch my 30 min of heaven for 8 hours of hell lol
I wonder how u get the whole video without gettin stuck. I only throw a crank when sand or bottom ı know very well
hey G where can I find that crank bait? and what's the name of them? and can I please meet you one day lol
Hey bud, full product details in the video description. Thanks for watching.
Nickajack my home pond 😆
Just let me hold'em
Man they push up.
What lake is this yall
Indonesian hadir bos
I see you use a snap, though you pros didn’t use them
Can work well -- a small one doesn't affect the bait's action and supports fast bait swaps (wo having to retie) as you experiment with different running depths and colors.
Some of them do when they film just because they go through so many bait changes. Honestly I always use them for crankbaits, and every time I can without effecting the action on my jerkbait. Norman Speed clips, the smaller size. Day 4 with Frank Scalish (BTL) Uncle Frank put me on them. It’s not your granddads swivel clip. It’s muchhh better.
Oh and did I mention verrry cheap.. 😍
Caught a 30lb bag on cranks with a clip.never retied, had back to back 7 lbers. I love em. Only change em out if your changing lures alot
Not impressed with the OG lines. Much rather throw the Little John because of the success rate with them year round.
That does not look like or sound like The Gman???????
This dude talks wwaaaaayyyyyy too much.
