- Using some frame interpolation we can now see Wilt Chamberlain jumping off of just one step perhaps higher than any other NBA player has in very slow motion. The original 25fps footage is thanks to the archiving efforts of fellow UA-camr 70'sFan. Follow his channel and / or Patreon to help him obtain more rare footage:

For those curious, yes, this was actually whistled a goaltend and yes goaltending had existed for the entirety of Wilt Chamberlain's career. It's a clip showing how high he gets off one-step, hopefully people won't be mislead into thinking goaltending didn't exist back then.
That other early video that you have on him in B&W - when he intercepted the shot ( I think he was in college in the video..) and it was called goaltending as well... the angle is hard to see it, but it sure looks as if he was around eye-level with the rim.
Tyler Hingleton .... and that was a 300+ pound, 36 year old Wilt doing that.
@Coatesville Red Raiders I'm a big fan of both Thompson and Wilt. Shame there's no video footage of anyone taking dollars off the top of the backboard.
Media builds opinion. Sad but true. If there was Big money to make, Wilt would be for the crowd what he Really is: the GOAT. Black lives matter.
Great point 🎯
And that's with shoes so flat, he's practically jumping barefoot.
exactly wilt would be 7’3” in todays shoes lol
i think hes wearing some converses
Good point. An amazing jump!
Barefoot is better than a bad shoe
the shoe hasn't got to do with the jump ..its about the landing
This is why I laugh when people say he couldn't dominate with today's athletes. He's an athlete among athletes in ANY ERA.
Then imagine if he had todays modern technology and workout routines
@@Aiden-vb2ws And that's exactly why I know he would dominate in today's era
Prof Aid how is your modern technology working for today’s weak athletes. Why they can’t they play 48 minuets at a slower pace game? They are not and never will be more athletic now. Stamina is a huge part of being better. Who in today’s game has it. So much for your modern technology and sports medicine.😅😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@43msd I think the modern technology and sports medicine is better nowadays, but the athletes of today don't have the same heart and drive as the old days, that's why they miss out alot of the season.
He was so far a superior physical specimen compared to anybody else who has ever played in the league ever it's a joke. Quicker and faster than Olajuwon bigger and stronger than O'Neal, can jump higher than Michael and that is without modern training methods and nutrition. The real G.O.A.T.
I'm amazed at the athleticism, but I am also impressed with how far the the camera guys are from the court. Wilt would have crushed someone in todays game with that absurd 1 step vertical
Tyler Hingleton he himself said he held back caz he didn’t wanna come across as too aggressive on the court
One needs to remember that only about 2% of Wilt’s career is available on film (most of it from his later career). If the same were the case for LeBron we likely would not know that he was capable of a jump like that
@Jesus Saldana
Who cares? What's with the LeBron nut hugging?
Jesus Saldana Wilt has a 48 inch vert but keep talking bro
@Jesus Saldana I didn't make up the 2% number (maybe it's up to 3% now but it is very low). There are hardly any available games of Wilt and all of the highlights that you have seen of him have been from a very limited number of games. The first five seconds of this one hour Wilt montage are proof
ua-cam.com/video/G94iJr8ZbzM/v-deo.html
Rules were created to keep him from being so dominant...that ought to tell young people how special he was
@Sheriff Heck Definitely not MJ, for him the literal opposite was done (just like for Shaq), to stack on top of the greatest teammates that he had already.
The only player to score triple digits in a game
The athletecism he displays is insane. Jumping off 1 leg and reaching 13ft and 3' with whatever the shoes were like back then
The shoes were freaking Chuck Taylors. That's right, he did that in converse!
The greatest basketball player to ever live and it ain't close
And athlete
Greatest athlete yes but best player? Hell no, he wasnt even the best in his era
Аяcнøп
Bullshit...he's the best player and athlete in any era...he still holds 72 records (68 by himself with no ties) and he hasn't played since 1973...100 points in a game, 55 rebounds in a game (against Bill Russell), averaged 50 points a game, never fouled out of a game, etc.etc. etc....

This is the highly controversial goal tending call by referee Mendy Rudolph in Game 7 of the 1962 Eastern Conference Finals. This call put the Celtics up 107-102 with less than 2 minutes to go in the game, but despite his focus on defense (e.g., 14 blocked shots prior to this goaltending call) in this game, Wilt immediately returned to his dominant scoring ways. The Big Dipper scored the next 5 points to tie the game at 107, but a last second shot by Sam Jones gave the heavily favored Celtics a 109-107 victory.

ONE HUNDRED PERCENT💯 It's like Wilt didnt even exist to these people. ESPN recently put out a top 10 players of all time list and put Bill Russell ahead of Wilt😳 And Lebron at #2 so obviously they're supposedly ranking by skill, not rings, but they still managed to have Wilt at #6😒
yeah bro i just read on his book where he said kareem is overated for never trying hard enough and care only for points and man he is got a fucking point
@@Blkac-pill-Black-Life Wilt called Kareem overrated and said that he didn't try hard enough? Wilt is a stat padder and a choker who takes a backseat during the playoffs and finals and he is calling Kareem overrated? If only Wilt tried as hard as Kareem and Russell he would have more than 2 rings
His free throws?? 😀
He is the greatest athlete.... But he is not the greatest player 😀
Wow that’s insane!
Thanks
Wilt was the most athletically gifted human in modern history, and it's not particularly close. He was over 7 feet tall, he was fast enough to run D1 college track, he was strong enough to out-lift professional bodybuilders, he had enough stamina to play every minute of every game for an entire NBA season, his vertical was clearly close to 45-50 inches at the very least since he's able to get his head above the rim without a running start or time to wind up, and he was a hall of famer in two sports (basketball and volleyball). Who else matches Wilt in terms of physical dominance? Goliath? Thanos?
@LesterChesterSylvester TheMolester useless!!! 😂 if you dropped wilt into this current small ball NBA he'd average 40 a game. imagine draymond green or PJ tucker playing C trying to guard this guy. there aren't 5 players in the league who could come close to guarding him. i guess you think shaq would be useless in todays league too?
Wilt was a physical anomaly. 7'1, athletically gifted (rumoured 50 inch vertical), unbeleivable endurance and uncanny strength (players have said he would pick them up and move them at will).
Went a long time in the NBA without fouling out of a game, if ever, couldn't find out for sure if he ever did. That is my favorite stat of his.
@LesterChesterSylvester TheMolester you got nil rings idiot! you know nil is zero! LOL
@LesterChesterSylvester TheMolester Who was talking about today? Some people think L.James is the goat but he only has 3 rings.
Reason why Wilt not fouling out is a thing means he didn't use his strength to bully players like Shaq did. They also didn't record blocks during his prime, no telling what that stat would look like.
If you cannot appreciate what a rare individual Wilt was, then why are you watching his video? I didn't say he was the greatest player, just very gifted human being.
@LesterChesterSylvester TheMolester Didn't see the reply till now. No worries man. He did have foul trouble though, the fella tried everything to fix it too, even granny shots lol.

GOAT - oh, and I forgot to mention he also owns the NBA record book....here is but one example - 60+ point games - Wilt has the record with 32 games...who's in second place? Kobe with 6!! And if anyone tells you "well, they all scored a lot back then" or "no one played defense" blah blah blah then ask them why none of Wilts peers have joined him higher up on that (or any other list, besides rebounds, Bill Russell was close). Wilt had some great peers, too - West, Russell, Baylor, Barry, Jabbar (whose sky hook he blocked numerous times), Robertson, etc. I could go on and on but you get the idea. Check the record book - you'll be amazed.
Too much disrespect on Wilt's name. If we're talking from a pure skill and physical perspective like they love to argue for Lebron, then he is the true GOAT
One of my favorite Wilt records is his 124 career 30-30 (points and rebounds) games. Every other player in NBA history combined has 32.
He was lucky to play when he did .he wouldn't have those numbers in the 80s and beyond ..
@@aje2321 he would be twice as athletic bc they had no modern technology to help with injuries or anything and they didn't have a three point line then so if we were in the 80's he would be way more athletic and probably be able to shoot alright but he could already shoot a little bit
Actually if any one tells you they scored alot back then and they didnt play defense they would be correct. And what do you mean why wasnt his peers join him up in anything other then rebounds? 3 of the 5 top ppg averages are from his era. 5 of top 10. Wilt did play against players that overall that are not on level of players from 80s on. His enormous scoring stats really started dropping off while he was in his prime because the nba was catching up to him athletically. He would have been very good in any era. But that career scoring average 2nd to mj. ( which is much more impressive considering the level of competition and how slow the pace of the game was during that era. ) would have been considerably lower then 30 ppg , if he came along 5 years later. The wider lane hurt his offense as well as several other players from that era. Mostly because of poor ball handling skills and not great shooters.
No Question, He would absolutely dominate in today's game! 💪

@@brum23 Bill Russell had team mates worth having. The rules of the game were changed becuse of Wilt - not Russell. Wilt was the most double teamed player in history. Players fouled Wilt more than they did every other player. Fore-arm smash some one and they fall over. Shoulder barge Wilt and he wont move much - so the referees let them get away with it. In todays game - players would send him to the free throw line ALL the time - as it was the only weakness to his game.

When I time this out, I get a vert of about 37 inches. That kind of number has come up when I measure out a lot of his one-step verts on this channel. If these are running at the right speed I think his standing vert in games was a little below 40'. FYI after timing out a bunch of these I do not even nearly believe the 48' figures - but I absolutely believe comfortably over 40 in ideal conditions, which is just stupid for a 7'2 centre.
With his stupid long arms 37' puts him 4-5' shy of the top of the backboard in this clip.
For reference that means he could dunk quite easily on a 12 foot basket off the vert shown here.
For comparison, MVP Shaq was leaping sub 30' in games. There's about a 10 inch difference in their standing verts.
edit; I mean waaaaay sub 30'. It was unusual for him to go over 22'. I wouldn't have believed it if I didn't measure it myself.
I was thinking somewhere around 40” but didn’t calc it out. Absolute insanity. OP deserves recognition for shining light on Wilt’s greatness.
I bet his feet really hurt when he landed. Their is no shock absorbing n his shoes at all. Maybe if he wore a pair a Jordan's he probably could get his vert to 43 inches.
@@KISS_MY_CONVERSE to be honest I'm pretty sceptical that modern shoes help your vert much. I think they're mainly there to save your feet and benefit leapers who take off from one with a big heel plant. We've seen that Wilt's feet held out, which is surprising for someone so big. Shaq did have some foot problems, as mannnny of the super-heavy centres do.
To reach 13'3" required a 45 inch vertical for Wilt with his 7'8" wingspan.

Yes, Wilt was fast up and down, but his lateral quickness not so great. I do think he would dominant in today's game more than Shaq did when he played.
Wilt was basically like an oversized version of many of the great athletic fast centers like Robinson or Olajuwon. This gave him the strength of really strong centers like Shaq but with the speed and leaping ability of a thinner more athletic center. He was also extremely talented winning the field goal percentile title - 9 times. And a majority of his shots were fadeaway jumpers, not dunks.
Except he was even more athletic than the "thin" centers and even stronger than the "big" centers like Shaq. Inhuman.
Never fouled out of an NBA game.
He didn’t 🤔?
never played against a level playting field either...played when there werent athletes who could play above the rim at the other 4 positions as well as most of the other centers...woulda been a all star and hofer if he played during the 80s but all of those astronomical numbers are a byproduct of playing during the stone age of the games history.

The most athletic, the most dominant, the GOAT!
The GOAT 👑.
I respect so many great athletes over the years in all sports, and I don't think America has ever produced an all-around physical athlete and specimen like Wilt. Now, if you want to tell me that MJ or Russell was the NBA GOAT (I'd lean to Wilt), that's reasonable. Even in this clip, Wilt - the strongest man ever to play in the NBA - goes up with no running start, blocks it with his off-hand, lands, and quickly leaps to almost save the ball. And he does it so fluidly. Wilt had amazing strength, could run and jump with anyone, was agile, incredibly coordinated, had great stamina and skill. Simply one of a kind!
How is this jump even possible with such a small lead step for someone this tall and wide? Unbelievable !
The greatest......
🐐
Less important, but just the same, am wondering how long was the hop he made trying to save the ball after the block? Some serious distance covered there!
Crazy man, but what’s the song in the background? These vids always use song good music
Wilt with today's sports science and sports accesories would have destroyed every single centre in the league
We saw DeAndre Jordan block shots better. Does that mean he's some Goat? Did these players get a chance to play on a 9 foot court like Wilt did? Ctfu.
Crazy block
My God. The best center ever
Look at how fast he was to jump out of bounds to try to save the ball after jumping so high. Who knows maybe at the beginning of the game he would have jumped 5 to 8 inches higher. No body talks about how fast Wilt was
The angle makes this look more impressive than it is. He's a couple of feet away from the basket, but it looks at first sight as if hes close to the basket and his head is above the rim
His arm brushes the net on the way down, so he is right under the basket.
I can't believe this video exists in such high quality because for the last year, I keep seeing random people in comment threads asking for video evidence that Wilt could jump 40 inches or higher because according to them, his head would be above the rim if he jumped that high. Well, I paused the video at around 20 or so seconds in just to make sure and it might be a perspective issue, but it looks to me like not only is his head above the rim, but his chin is at rim level!
By the way, I don't fault people for asking for video evidence. The science educator Carl Sagan liked to say that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. And this video is indeed extraordinary evidence even though he is goaltending because that isn't the point.
dude would have at least a 55 inch vert today with modern shoes, training, and diet and would be probably 7,4

I don't think he had a 48 inch vertical... But he had for sure a 40 inch that could become easily 42 with proper shoes and even more with today's knowledge of training.
Don't think he lifted 500 lbs, but at the end of the day many magazines did the same thing saying Giannis was 7 feet 1, Shaq 7 feet 3 and Lebron 280 lbs (when at best he was "only" 270).
