Lockheed Super Constellation Start-Up & Take Off at Airport Bern-Belp
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лют 2025
- A legendary Lockheed L-1049F Super Constellation, HB-RSC, visited Airport Bern-Belp in Switzerland. Engine start-up with flames and smoke. Flame out while turning on the runway. Close-up take off and great engine sound.
The "Super Connie" is still considered the most beautiful aircraft ever built. The elegant dolphin-shaped fuselage and the triple tail design are a feast for the eyes. The distinctive sound of the four powerful 18-cylinder radial engines (Wright R-3350) make the heart of any plane enthusiast beat faster. The screechy brakes might put a smile on the faces of many people.
Enjoy the close-up view of the spectacular Super Constellation; a great piece of aviation history or in other words a flying legend! The Swiss watch manufacturer BREITLING is the main sponsor of this classic airliner.

I used to ride in this beauty pretty regularly from New Orlean-St. Louis-Chicago and return in the late 50s. It was always a pleasure. The interiors were roomy and comfortable. The U-shaped cocktail area at the back invited pax to meet each others. Often, cabin crew would sit-in, too. The service was excellent. Those were the days, my friend.
Thank you Joe for this lovely comment. Great to hear about your wonderful flight experiences with the Constellation.
Brings back all of the romance of flying (and it was truly romance back then)!
😍👏💕👍🇧🇩
The amount of blood, sweat and tears it takes to keep an aircraft like this in the air is beyond most peoples comprehension.
I am among the ones that would gladly provide blood and sweat, and the tears would be of joy.
Octavio Valadao Ferreirinha de Oliveira Most guys who provide the blood sweat and tears to keep these aircraft flying, do it out of love for aviation, its definitely not a money making proposition.
"*Can't keep my mind from the circling skies/ Tongue-tied and twisted, just an Earth-bound misfit, I*" -Pink Floyd, "Learning To Fly"
(-Sounds like those brakes could use some work, though.)
No problem, really.
In 1962, I flew on one of these across the Pacific. Travis AFB, Cal., to Hawaii, to Midway Island, to Wake Island, to Guam, to the Philippines. 30+ hours, just those 4 engines droning on and on. Beautiful plane, but I couldn't wait to get off of it.
WOW what a story! Good old memories, thanks for telling.
How old are you now???😰😰
She's one of the prettiest planes ever built. Great catch.
DC3 and the Super Constellation.... bucket list to ride!
Highly recommended by me :)
Got that right
Me 2!
I truly hope that this comes true for you (but you had better take me along with you)!!!
Brings back memories. When I was just a little kid, my father was a Capt. for TWA so I had the chance to fly in one. Very moving experience.
I could listen to those engines all day long.
Most wonderful indeed.
You’d be deaf after a week😅
Beautiful classic from the golden age...
I love those vintage piston radial engines and everything mechanical and hydraulic. Those where the times :)
Except this aircraft is powered by C56 turbines, its a turboprop.
Adrien Perié This is not a turboprop. It's internal combustion.
marine4814 My mistake. I was convinced the super constellation went over to the C56, i beleive some of them did. This one though is Wright R-3350 powered.
@@adrienperie6119 They actually due have turbine recovery on those some design where the exhaust goes through a turbine and that feeds via a shaft directly back into the engine for more power.
The 50's were lockheed's golden years... long live the super constellation!
*sheds tear*
Beautiful time warp, makes my eyes water, it's got soul!
Sehr schöne Aufnahmen, meiner Meinung nach eins der schönsten Flugzeuge das es gibt.
Quite possibly the most beautiful plane ever built. If I were a rich man: I would definitely fly around in one of these. Connie holds a special place in my heart.
Every time I watch this video I get goosebumps and tears in my eyes. Such a magnificent and gorgeous plane. I remember going to Pittsburgh International airport in the late 60's and seeing one parked there waiting for its next flight. Living not too many miles from the airport I always saw them flying over. Miss those days.
Thanks for this compliment. Super Connie evokes emotions. I am proud on my two flights with this Super Connie. It was most spectacular. Glad you saw them flying in the late 60's. Good old aviation times. Cheers Matt
Nothing like the majestic, beautiful and graceful Connie. 👌💕
Most beautiful aircraft!
Super Video!
Man kann solche Flugzeuge gar nicht oft genug sehen!
Beautiful airframe, was the first aircraft I ever flew in, will Never forget...
Very cool! Nice memories of the most beautiful plane ever built.
What an airplane! It just flew over my house in Switzerland and what a sound! There are two specific sounds in the air i can always instantly recognize: the JU-52 and now the one of Super Conny, which is frequently visible on Swiss skies! :-)
Lucky you
I made many flights on the Constellation and enjoyed everyone of them. What an airplane !
So much Nostalgia attached to the image of this plane, as much as a Dakota DC3 - some may argue! I love it!
Back in the day when you wore your Sunday best for air travel. The Connie is one of the most beautiful airframes ever conceived. Slim body, long legs and a unforgettable tail end.
I is definitely one of the most beautiful airplane ever built. It was great to see it at Bern!
Like a fine lady 😊👌
Fantastic 👍 such a beautiful plane. The lines, the start-up, the engines roaring 💪 Gives me a nice little rush every time..... Thanks Matt!
Thank you Aximus! This Super Connie was a top highlight! Cheers Matt
I remember seeing pictures of these growing up. I always thought these were the coolest most beautiful aircraft I had ever seen. I'm just into my 60's and still think the same about these. You'd think there'd be a market for these today in this hurry up world to provide something nostalgic and slower and enjoyable and beautiful. Beautiful old school transportation. I'd pay for that experience.
One of the best looking airplanes of all time!
There is nothing--absolutely nothing--like a Connie. I'm old enough to remember these in scheduled service, but we flew MATS space available or civilian DC-6s, which are pretty neat too. Jets are OK, but radials have a life of their own that can't be duplicated by anything else. Thanks for uploading this!
Thanks for your kind words.
I was lucky to fly in these birds back in the old days.
If there is ever an aircraft that has nice artistic lines it is the Connie....
Absolutely NO ! Without a doubt, the most beautiful piece of machinery to come out of the twentieth century. There are many other beautiful aircraft from the same period, but none comes near the Connies allure and beauty. Kelly Johnson..........one in a million.
I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one that feels that way about the Connie!
WOW die Constellation fliegt also noch, ein fantastisches, aber zugleich auch altes Arbeitstier was schon damals gut flog.
Great video. No hideous music, just great sound (its own music!) and good views. Wish that gorgeous creation would hit the west coast of the USA. Very majestic. Sehr schön!! Vielen dank.
!
What a beautiful aircraft!
Thanks
Wow some views of this beautiful plane! Thanks for posting! Gotta find one to ride in some day. My favourite airliner by far!
Great sound of powerful engines at taking off brings to me good memories of my childhood at the airport.
That is great to hear, Henry! Thanks for your kind comment.
Prettiest plane ever made.
My all time favorite airliner....this iconic plane is something else...absolutely beautiful...and those engines sound amazing...great upload.....Steve.
Those Super Connies are awesome ships. Right there with Lockheed's Electra.
In the air where it belongs and not stuck in some museum someplace. I wish more big stuff like that was flying regularly in the States (at least we now have two B29s flying now as of July, 2016)
Absolutely true! Super Connie is a flying legend.
Beautiful misc to the ears
I miss this kind of plane...so super-nostalgic to me. Saw one in 1976 when I was 10 and never kept my eye off it. Grandeur of all pre-jet aircraft, in my opinion.
Perhaps the most beautiful airliner ever made.
True! It is most wonderful.
Wow! that aircraft really has character.
What a beautiful plane.
My parents met on a Super Conny long ago. Unfortunately, they were married to other people at the time...but that is another story.
+McRocket
I would love to her that story!
The Connie cries out love!
+Tom Szumlic *hear
This comment is criminally underappreciated 😏
@@tomszumlic8971 It's a long story.
If you want to still hear it (I just now saw your comment)?
I will tell it to you.
Btw - the ending is not a happy one.
☮
Kinda late, but your parents meeting under such circumstances on a Constellation... I guess you can say that they were...
Star-crossed lovers.
Sorry for the horrible pun usage.
Its great that these old birds are being preserved for all of our generations to come.
The super connie is quite an amazing sight to see and hear flying, instead of being out in the desert in Arizona rotting its life away over there.
Prop-Jet Electra you are referring to the former MATS connie, i saw that aircraft in an airflow years ago..... i was pissed when i heard that gave it to the koreans. why i ask, why???? does that aircraft ever get flown anymore i wonder.
Always been in love with the Connie’s
Most wonderful plane!
What a beautiful, glamorous airplane. There’ll never be another one like it
The finest piston-engined airliner of all times!
Timeless beauty!
Ahh nothing like a Connie, thank you for upload - most enjoyed.
My pleasure! Glad you enjoyed this video. Cheers Matt
It's so satisfying when those big engines finally fire up.
Amazing beautiful airplane! I can remember planes like this overhead from early childhood memories - living near Tinker AFB
The Cadillac of the reciprocating engine fleet. Everybody I knew who was a crew member on these loved them. Listen to those brakes and did you notice the load on the nose gear tires in a turn? What a plane.
Yes, it was a fantastic aircraft! Sadly it is grounded since a few years. But I enjoyed two flights on this Super Constellation, definitely most adventurous flight experiences.
I was amazed at how preserved this old girl is.
The flame out from the exhaust is a bit scary but that's they way the designs were at the time.
Kudos to all you men who just keep her flying on and on,and let us know when you will make fly overs in my town of san diego,CA.
Such an amazing and beautiful machine. Epic video.
Thank you Edo!
I love the sound of those props
Me too :) Thanks!
best looking prop passenger plane.....
Thank you! Yes, it is definitely one of the best ones!
Super Aufnahmen, das ist eines meiner Lieblings Flugzeuge. Ich war 2007 mal bei einem start in alten Rhein SG dabei, war echt geil.
Nice flyby sound whilst taking off
Really nice video. Those Wright R-3350 Duplex-Cyclone are super complicated engines.
Thank you Brian!
Such a beautiful plane. Just love these vintage aircraft.
I totally agree. The Super Constellation is one of the most beautiful aircraft ever designed.
A magnificent, sexy plane, manufactured by Lockheed. It flew from the late 40's (I believe) and well into the 60's and took passengers on international trips everywhere. I think it is the most beautiful and elegant plane ever manufactured. To this day, it has maintained legions of fans worldwide! It was usurped by Boeing's 707 in the late 50's which used turbo fan (jet) engines for transatlantic and transpacific flights. The "Super Constellation's" sheer beauty ever reminds us of the romantic age of flying internationally and ALL passengers being treated as first-class "jet-setters."
Thank you for your great comment! It is really a sheer beauty!
That is freakin beautiful, great sound, awesome video M!!
懐かしいYSー11旅客機!
私が初めて飛行機✈️に乗ったのがYSー11旅客機なのです、小学生五年生の時!

Such a beautiful fuselage!

Mahassheanie: GREAT TO HEAR THE ' OL GAL IS VERY MUCH LOVED! KEEP ON FLYIN', GRAND MA, JUST KEEP ON A FLYIN' FOR MANY GENERATIONS, STILL TO COME, THAT WILL ENJOY YOUR "GREAT BEAUTY"!
Excuse me... I meant to say, Matthasieani! Bet I STILL spelled it wrong. SORRY!....Me big dummy!😴
Your just Matt :) abbreviation from Matthias. Thanks for watching! Yes, the staff does its utmost to keep this Super Connie in perfect condition. Cheers Matt

Most Beautiful airplane ever.

Oh how I miss hearing those big Wrights.
Cool video of a classic airliner!

What a fantastic video! & no sound too. Thanks for sharing!!
My pleasure! Thank you for watching!
Amazing! What a sound!!!
i was a little boy when these were in service, beautiful plane
Looks like a very happy plane.
One of the classiest airliners to ever grace the skies. 😍
Yes, a wonderful aircraft with so much style!
Stunning Footage Matt - HUGE LIKE 😎👍
Thank you very much, Ed!
the juice spills at 3:45. amazing vid. what a gorgeous bird.
Tolle Nahaufnahmen, klasse Video. Hab sie in Finkenwerder schon live erlebt, ein einmalige Erlebnis, auch mit dem Feuer beim Engine Start und Takeoff. :-)
The Concorde of piston aircraft.
Yos
Absolutely love watching those four engines start. The early days of aviation are a joy to remember. American President Harry Truman traveled in a VC-118 from 1947 to 1953.
How could one miss that! =D It's such an awesome video!
Stunning aircraft!
Yes, indeed! Sad that it has been grounded.
Wow...that's not just an airplane. That is a work of engineering art.
So beautiful. Definitely not a generic airbus
I agree! Indeed a masterpiece, painted in the sky like an angel.
Queen of the skies!
It's beautiful. One of my favourite planes!
What an absolute beauty 😍
Thank you very much!
I remember as a kid flying on these, O'Hare to Atlanta, Tampa, Miami, and back Started from Battle Creek, Mi, on the "Blue Goose" (North Central) DC3, one stop at South Bend, then Chicago, Eastern Airlines if I recall, for the remainder of the trip. This was when flying wasn't all that common, and one dressed up to fly. They served real meals with real dishes and real silverware. The only real drawback to prop planes was the noise, but the flying was what we loved. Then we graduated to the turboprops, then the jets...
Saw this thing flying over Rapperswil. Incredible, it just thunders overhead and inspires more awe than any airbus.
When I was a kid growing up in Milwaukee we lived just a few blocks away from the "old" terminal on Layton Ave. This was before the jets and seeing these beautiful Connie's was always a treat. Great video.
Thank you! Great to hear that you saw them flying. Good old times in aviation!
What a symphony!
That's wonderful! I have always loved propeller planes.
BEAUTIFUL AIRCRAFT.THANKS FOR SHARING!
Beautiful old plane
I was looking for william shattner hanging out the window shooting at a gremlin on the wing, lol
+Tobias Sulzberger in welcher Stadt wohnst du?
+Tobias Sulzberger ich in Bad Säckingen
Weiß jemand wann sie wieder fliegt?
Gorgeous.
shootin flames. Gotta love it!
Absolute thing of beauty !!
aviation history in action - makes us realise how far we've come in terms of faster and more efficient aircraft, but this was cutting edge technology in its day
To me, this is the most beautiful air liner ever built. The sleek lines are sexy. Sad that they do not fly anymore.
