He knocked his own hat off intentionally. You can’t reach for your hat, have it fall off and then demand a let replay to your own advantage. Mistakes happen, but you don’t get a free replay because of it. That is not the rule, when you yourself caused your own hindrance against the other player. He’s a great sportsman otherwise, but this was ridiculous, selfish and deluded.

Controversial call assessments: 1) Schwartzman is incorrect about the hat thing. You can't hinder yourself, only your opponent. Should the opponent have no issue, play continues. 2) I get what Dart was trying to say about it being a kinda late challenge, but she was wrong about the ball already having bounced and generally chair umps are lenient on calls that skirt the limits of timeliness. 3) The out call was made before ADF made contact with the ball. From a technical standpoint, the ball was dead upon the call. Point should be replayed. There is the stupid rule that the chair ump can determine when a player is hindered and when they aren't, but I choose to ignore that rule because it is stupid. #'s 2 and 3 would both be completely sorted if chair umpires were given an actual replay system, as would probably 75% of all disagreements on questionable decisions.

Being a tennis umpire is a tough job and many of them deserve more respect than they get. However, it has to be said, the umpire in the Schwartzman-Kozlov match didn’t enforce the rules correctly at all. In many matches. He’s been the same. Far too many mistakes for a professional official.

Being a tennis umpire is a tough job and many of them deserve more respect than they get.
However, it has to be said, the umpire in the Schwartzman-Kozlov match didn’t enforce the rules correctly at all. In many matches. He’s been the same. Far too many mistakes for a professional official.
