  • On this day, April 15th, the Titanic sank. We have a quick look at berth 44 where she sailed from on her ill fated maiden voyage.

How beautiful is the GM2 seen in the distance. Just breathtaking ships especially the Cunard queens. The sheer size and power of these ships is overwhelming. But just imagining the titanic setting off from berth 44. Just amazing.

They are massive ships these days shipmate. If Titanic was there, she would like small by comparison

Hi Solent Ships, very good video. Very sombre for it was the 108th Anniversary of the Titanic disaster and for me personally as my beloved Grandmother sadly passed away on 15th April 2020.

Excellent footage of the BRITANNIA and QUEEN VICTORIA in the Ocean Dock in the Port of Southampton.
I have emailed ABP SOUTHAMPTON to ask them to take a photo of the BRITANNIA and QUEEN VICTORIA in the Ocean Dock but have yet to receive a reply so I was extremely pleased to see your excellent footage depicting the two vessels in the Ocean Dock as it's an extremely unique situation.
The last time that two cruise ships/liners were berthed together in the Ocean Dock was in 1977 when the Cunard liner QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 was at the former Ocean Terminal at berths 43/44 and the Russian Black Sea Shipping Company's LEONID SOBINOV was at berth 46.
The LEONID SOBINOV was built for Cunard Line in 1955 and rebuilt for cruising in 1963 and renamed FRANCONIA. Sold to the Russians in 1973 and eventually scrapped in 2000.
The last Cunard Line vessel to dock at berths 43/44 was the QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 in 1979, at the former Ocean Terminal. The Cunard Line relocated to the Queen Elizabeth II Terminal at berths 38/39 in April 1980 with the arrival of the QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 from her 1980 world cruise.
The former Ocean Terminal closed to passenger operations in November 1979. It would remain closed to passenger ship operations but was used on a couple of occasions for events such as the Tall Ship's Festival in 1982. The Ocean Terminal was demolished in October 1983.
The new Ocean Terminal on the opposite side of the dock at berths 46/47 was completed in April 2009.
The last time that a Cunard vessel wearing the traditional Cunard black and red funnel that had docked at berths 43/44 was the QUEEN ELIZABETH in October 1968.
This is the first time since October 1968 that berths 43/44 have had a Cunard Line vessel alongside wearing the traditional Cunard line funnel.
Of course the QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 used berths 43/44 from her maiden voyage in April 1969 up until November 1979 but she had a black and white funnel. It wasn't until August 1983 that the QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 gained the traditional Cunard Line red and black funnel.
This view of the QUEEN VICTORIA at berths 43/44 is such a nostalgic view and a view that I've always wished for but never ever expected to see happen.
Whenever I am at work in the Port of Southampton I always dream of a Cunard Line vessel at berths 43/44 as I have fond and personal memories of the QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 at the former Ocean Terminal.
If you have a few aerial photos that you wish to share I would love to have a few copies.

Thanks shipmate. Your knowledge is impressive, sounds like you are a salty seadog than myself.
It's not easy to make good videos and take photos at the same time, but I'll make a special flight and take some photos for you. This afternoon/evening should be ideal conditions.

@@SolentShips Hi shipmate and thank you for your reply.
      Regarding my knowledge.
My late Grandfather worked for the White Star Line from 1924 then joined the Cunard Line in 1936 after the merger between the two company's. He joined the Queen Mary at Clydebank in 1936. My late Grandfather retired in 1975 as a restaurant manager on-board the Queen Elizabeth 2. He spent 51 year's at sea.
My father was at sea for 10 year's with various shipping company's including Cunard, P&O, Royal Mail Line, Union Castle Line. After leaving the Merchant Navy he went to work in the docks. My father spent the rest of his working life within the Port of Southampton, finally retiring in 2001 after 42 year's service.
The Port of Southampton was something of a weekend playground as a young lad as I often went to work with him on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, getting the opportunity to go on-board the different liners, collection brochures and menus, taking it all in and this all started when I was 7 year's old, imagine that now. My father used to get me onboard often introduce me to the pastry chef who always made sure I had some freshly baked cake's and off I went exploring the ship. My father always gave me a time and a meeting place just before the ship was ready to depart. Looking back on it I must have been a confident 7yo and someone my dad could obviously trust. Working in the Port now and being involved in the cruise ships that sort of thing could never possibly happen, it would be totally unheard of. When I tell my colleague's of those experiences they don't always believe me. I'm so grateful for those experiences when I was growing up.
My love affair with passenger vessels and ferries come from my personal connection with the Port of Southampton and my late Grandfather's and father's history in the Merchant Navy.
In 1983 aged 18 I followed in my late Grandfather's and father's footsteps by joining the Cunard Line aboard the Queen Elizabeth 2 as a waiter. My boyhood dream accomplished. I changed departments and joined the Front Desk/Pursers Office, I soon rose the ranks and ended up as Deputy Purser.
I spent 15 year's in the Merchant Navy with Cunard Line as well as a short period with P&O.
I now work in the Port of Southampton in cruise ships operations, which I have done since 2006, "back to my old playground".
I have a huge amount of passion for the Port of Southampton along with the cruise, passenger, liner trade. Over the years I've amassed a huge amount of knowledge with regards to the Port of Southampton and the cruise industry.
It all started when I was a 5 year old boy when I was at the former Ocean Terminal at berths 43/44 watching my late Grandfather depart on the maiden voyage of the Queen Elizabeth 2 to New York in May 1969.
From that day I was hooked on the sea, the ship's and the docks. I often wonder what my childhood and adult life would have been like if I hadn't been born in Southampton and had no links to the sea. Probably a far borer one.
From that 5 year old boy to the man I am know it's all down to my late Grandfather and my father who is 83yo and someone who is still be very much there when we discuss the Port of Southampton and the ship's from the past.
I could honestly write a book and at one point I was very close in doing so but I prefer to leave comments online.
I am very active member and a senior member on a website called we.shipsnostalgia.com
I look forward to seeing more of your video's and maybe I can give you my email address at some point if you could send some stills as it would greatly appreciated.
      Regards
