As we moved around a bit and ended up in Santa Monica and when I was 13, I went to the YMCA. They had a great Judo Jiu Jitsu program there. I did that for 2.5 years. I started training in LA Chinatown Five Animal Kung Fu under grandmaster Ark Wong. While all that was going on, I read 2 magazine articles. One was Bruce’s Liberate yourself from Classical Karate and the other was an article by Dan Inosanto JKD is Fast, Powerful, and Deceptive.
Im 17-17.5 at the time so I contact Black Belt to ask if Bruce is there and they tell me Bruce is in Hong Kong making movies. Dan Inosanto was the only person teaching. So I asked if I could have the phone number and they told me no but its int he phone book. So I got his number and I called. He had one class, he limited it to 12 people. So these phone calls, I would get his wife and obviously he would say something and she said to call back in a week so I would call back in a week to the day and I did that and finally I got to talk to him and he was like “I might be starting a class soon, call me back in a week.” I called him back in a week.
I guess I just, I must have worn him down because in the middle of a conversation, he just says “Well I’ll tell you what, why don’t you drive down and see me tomorrow.” That’s why I said, 11 years old, I get introduced to Bruce Lee. 6 years later, I’m getting in the car to drive to be interviewed by his personal assistant and best friend and the only person teaching JKD at that time.”
