I have Rubbermaid self watering planters i bought 25+ years ago and they're still working great! Ive had more annuals propagate year after year in them too!
I did a LOT of work putting together self-watering containers for my garden in Houston. It turns out that it's a bad idea in 100% humidity to always have moist soil. The fungal issues were INSANE. Since then I've scrapped it and started letting the pot dry out before watering again, which has really helped with the fungus. I didn't realize that moisture is the enemy in the sub-tropics!
Same here in CNY. We go through a week and a half of heat during which things dry out. Then we proceed through a week of alternate-day storms. I'm considering this design for water-hungry plants like potato vines and brugmansias, and maybe elephant ears, but as far as my petunias and butterfly bushes are concerned, they seem to not mind going a day or two of dryness.
I just love watching your gardening videos. I learn so much helpful tips I actually managed to not kill this year's cactus plants because of your tips! Thanks again.
Awesome I just looked at this planter today at the garden center and wondered if it was worth the money . I will be watching for your results...Thank you your videos are wonderful!!!!
Might be a good idea to get a cheap funnel for that container, can't wait to how those plants do, i've always been hesitant on self watering containers.
Just came across your video, great looking flowers in that planter. I don't have an eye for "plants/flowers" and I'm starting my front porch and front yard from scratch. Front faces north so lots of shade little sun. I really like your ideas though and I have to say you are beautiful. Will keep watching your videos. Thank you!
Oh Laura that container for flowers it would be great for garden clubs to display their cut specimens . Do you do talks to garden clubs--like you don’t do enough 😄 just a thought. I am not as handy as I use to be but I would love to put specimens from my potted plants on mu from door😉
Ooh can't wait to see how the containers work out! Any chance you could show us how you prep your yard for winter later on? We just moved into a home this year and I'm not sure the best way to clean up summer plants and prep perennials and things for winter.
I feel like if you're living in an apartment with a busy day job, and have a balcony that was wide enough, having one of these would be amazing! You could plant it up according to your climate and how much sun your balcony gets, and you wont be stressing about watering your plants during your work or if you have too many things going on to remember every day.
This could be the answer to my plants surviving when we're away on a long trip! Unfortunately that did not happen this year but will have to try this out for next year. Also a fall yard clean up video would be so helpful!
Such a FANTASTIC video :-) Self watering containers look brilliant and would save so much time having to water all the time and looking forward to the updates on it :-) WOW the supertunia Vista bubblegums are absolutely BREATHTAKING :-) Dexter is ADORABLE :-) thanks so much for sharing Laura and sending heaps of love and happiness from Ireland XXXX
Great video! It's nice to see something informal mixed in with your other stuff. The variety keeps it all fresh. I watch a LOT of your videos :) Glad to see the pot worked. My front garden gets 100% sun all day so this type of pot would be a good option for me. I'm recently arrived in the SF bay area from the UK and I'm finding watering can be a real time consuming chore here so I grow lots of succulents! We're renovating an old spanish colonial style house and we need to completely do the front and back gardens so we have a ton of gardening challenges to come. Thanks for making me feel more confident about tackling them! I'd love to see some of your thoughts and suggestions on waterwise/drought tolerant garden and landscape design. Love your channel - keep up the good work! :)
Oh - and I meant to ask - did the pot retain it's colour in the sun? We get quite fierce sun here and I've seen quite a few plastic pots get bleached and discoloured. Not sure if you had it in full sun or if was in the sun for long enough for you to see if it bleached?
Hi, I am new here and new to gardening. I watched a few of your container gardening videos and I have a question. I planted a tiny garden in a self watering container and did like you said, watered from above to start. However, now I noticed I have a bunch of mold growing on the soil. Is it because I watered too much or maybe because I put a little potting soil ontop of the potting mix since I had some leftover. Anywho, I love your videos 😊 my mom recommended them to me, so now we're both gardening up a storm!
We're selling different styles of self-watering containers and pots in the garden center I work at and we tried out some of them. It works with several different plants and more during the summer when the evaporation is more intense... Also depends on the soil, how much water it can take in until it becomes saturated. But it is good to not keep it full all the time. And sometimes let the water reservoir be empty for a while. Otherwise the soil will be too soggy.
I love your garden. I have a quick question are those self watering containers good for all perennial plants. Will they tend to keep the soil too moist?
love it! I was curious about the big box in your foyer that you passed by to get to the self watering container...was that a vegetable garden trellis? I had a garden this year for the first time, loved it!, but was kinda land locked with the cucumbers and they spread EVERYWHERE. I was thinking of doing some sort of climbing trellis for them next year and saw that box and had to ask you. ☺ thx!
Hi I have a quick question, I don't know if your familiar with small bamboo pot planters grow kits, I just started getting plants for my room and one of these planters were my first. They're self watering with a wick going to the water, the only thing is it's for a Spanish Stone Succulent and I feel like the soil could be too moist for it to begin growing. So my question is, will they be okay or should I take out the water and set up a schedule for them based on how dry the soil is?
"They spelled plugs wrong" had me in tears, oh they're good! I can only really imagine they used the wrong vowel, but even then it's not easily comprehendable, my best effort came out as ploerg, did they attempt to create the L by rolling an R? did they use an extra G or two? you must share this spelling, please! I might very well not be able to sleep tonight!
You're so pretty! Your hair color goes well with your eyes. Do you get it done at a salon or is that box color? My eyes are blue like yours and I tried to do dark brown, but it didn't work with my skin tone. Your hair has red in it. Sorry, I'm off topic. Getting compliments from one woman to another is a nice thing :).
I like the idea of the pot but I guess I can't imagine that I have to preserve the pot by bringing it in. Usually I think it's the plants I want to save, not the pot.
Yikes! That's so expensive! I was wanting 2 of them for both sides of the driveway. I live in Utah where it's extremely hot and dry in the summer and fall. Dragging out the hose all that way is a pain in the tushy but that's more than my floral budget for the season....Sad Panda.😢

$167. for one pot would be many peoples total garden budget for the year. That's outrageous for injected plastic containers.. It cost the company after tool and die was made approx. $2.00 in material. Didn't some guy go to jail for inflating medicine prices?

Thanks for sharing! I have learn a lot from you. the close shot for your eyes makes your eyes look like diamonds.

Dream come true!! I travel and can't always water. Thanks!

I hope they have self watering hanging pots for along my fences!! This is just marvelous
Just came across your channel and I really love your videos!! I'm not a gardener but your videos make me want to go out and do some planting!! Thanks!
Hello Dexter. Hope you're having a nice day.

Looks like Dexter has stolen your heart. How sweet!
Hi ! they are awesome! I was wondering what happened if we have a lot of rain?
I love how you grow plants 🌱 😊
Great idea hope it works. Thank you
Great idea for my plants, thank you.
Looks like a great idea? I would really like a container which I don't have to water so often.
Self watering containers sound wonderful. Do they have drainage holes for when it rains heavily?
Hi, I am new here and new to gardening. I watched a few of your container gardening videos and I have a question. Love your video, your garden and Dexter ♥♥♥♥
Will there be an update in September / October on harvesting bees?

We need to see how to make the petunia tree stand you showed at the nursery please.
Another beautiful arrangement loved it
Great video! If I left those flowers in the test tubes will they root eventually? Thank you for your time.
Really look forward to ur videos....love your confidence and ability
I love this video!! I wish i had a space like yours :/.. I only have a small balcony..
I can't wait for next spring to plant with these containers. Do they work for citrus trees as well?
very expensive pots i recommend air pots so the plants dont become rootbound over time although you still have to keep watering which is the downside
amazing self-watering pots. it really works?
I love your garden. I have a quick question are those self watering containers good for all perennial plants. Will they tend to keep the soil too moist?
so lucky. it's 90° at 11am in Louisiana lol

Do you think these pots would work with herbs or vegetable plants? 🌱
I hope so
How deep is the soil area or how many gallons of soil does it hold and I'm assuming good it holds about 5 gallons of water
Do you have a clipped version that only focuses on the TruDrop?

Just came across this video and wondered how often you have to water? What size pot are you using?
Wow! That is actually really cool! How does it work? And what a beautiful design.
Do you have to drain it out during winter? I put a yellowtwig dogwood in my self watering planter.
Limerick is
How do you remember all the names of the flowers? Wow.
so cool stuff...guess too heavy one..love it.
Loved this kind of vloggy (yes I made that up😂) video! And love the self-watering pot idea! I hope it works! If so I'm in!👍🏼

Can you give us an update on your Honey bee's?
$167 I'll pass thanks
I'll take 3!
I'll pass cause I don't need containers these huge. I can take a tall planter and DIY it to be self-watering.
What size is the pot?
@gardenanswer How long did it take for the planter to go from full to empty or pretty close to it?
Great video!!!
Can you plant succulants in this container?
Love this
Loved the video, thanks for sharing
That pot would be great in TX!
How did it work?!? I can’t find a follow up video.
Oh I found it!
Thanks for sharing, love your videos! :)
Do they come larger?
How can I purchase the bucket
What size is this shown in the video?
what about indoor ones?
I love this video!!!
Please do a video on herbs.
you need a funnel for that : )
I like the idea of the pot but I guess I can't imagine that I have to preserve the pot by bringing it in. Usually I think it's the plants I want to save, not the pot.

Beautiful. Can you make over my garden???.
What state are you in?
I would love to buy these. Do you know the approximate retail price for these self watering planters?
