Since it looks like you get snow most of the winter - have you ever considered getting a set of dedicated winter tires on separate rims that you put on for winter time? We do that on our vehicles here in NW PA for the lake-effect snows. We have winter rims/tires for the Volt, the F350, the Ranger, and the Expy.
I did consider it, and several people do here. But even though we get a decent amount of snow in the mountain areas like Woodland park where I drove to. For Colorado Springs it melts off after a few days until the next storm so I really have to have a good all around tire.
No snow here yet, its been a very mild fall in Ontario. I just put on General Grabber Arctic LT winter tires, really didn't notice any difference in range. Very nice state you live in. OBY my tesla adapter should be arriving in December, fingers crossed. Cheers
Happy you are almost getting your adapter. Yeah I just got mine and going to test it soon. Yeah there’s not much difference in range on mine either. Maybe a little for the first 5k, but after that about the same.
Awesome!!! Not as good as the Michelin X-ice, but still really good. They are also one of the best AT tires in wet and dry weather You can look them up Falken Wildpeak AT3w www.discounttire.com/buy-tires/falken-wildpeak-a-t3w
Awesome! What part of Texas do you live? I’m sure you’re familiar with 87 through the Texas panhandle and New Mexico. I just finished a road trip where Texas was one of the stops. I drove back from Texas that way. Do you drive a lightning to and from?
@@F150LightningMike Yes Mike, very familiar with 87 and 287, maybe too familiar, drive once a month or so, I am in Grand Prairie, not too far from Cowboys stadium😭😭. Just got the Lightning couple of weeks back, I have a limited mileage lease, so probably wont be using for long road trips.
Yeah I don’t want to even talk about the cowboys. I can’t wait till Jerry Jones sells the team. He is the only common denominator left. They’ve changed players coaches and staff so many times, he needs to start taking the blame and let someone else be the official GM. Also if you do take that road trip make sure you have the Tesla DC adapter. That’s the only fast chargers between Fort Worth and Amarillo.
Love the videos Mike, appreciate the time you put into these. What made you decide on the wildpeaks over the ko2's? Im looking into good winter tires for my 23 lariat er here in CO and now there are the WP AT4's and KO3's available.
Since you are in Colorado too you understand that there is a lot of melting snow and wet and dry weather along the snow and ice. I looked at the K02s, that is what Costco was recommending, since they didn’t sell the Wildpeaks. But the problem with the K02s that I was seeing on reviews is that they weren’t as good in dry and wet weather, but looking at the reviews for the Wildpeaks people were saying that they are great in wet and dry weather as well as snow. If I lived further up North where snow was constantly on the ground I might have considered more the K02s, but since it snows here and melts away in a few days I needed a tire that handled variety. Hope that helps - also I did NOT look into the the K03s, but I did look at the AT4s and I would have gotten those if I was in more snow or off-roading on a regular basis. I settled on the at3s because I was very satisfied with all the reviews and with 17k miles on them now they still look new and I have been very satisfied with them. Oh also and this is a really big deal, there was a small hit to the range for the first 5k miles, but after that there is no difference. I guess the new just needed to wear off. I think it’s because what the reviews were saying and Falken themselves said that they engineered these to do really good on highway too. I can’t say that about what I read for that K02s Another tire you can look at that came out after I bought these are the TOYO Open Country A/T III EV - they are designed specifically for our type of EV trucks and so far I’m hearing good things.
You’re lucky bro! I’m in Michigan and no snow yet. Looking forward to it. How is the noise level of those tires as compared to the stock hankooks or what came on your truck?
Heres the latest video I did about them. I have been running a trip for over 14k miles, actually I just got back from my trip so it’s 17k miles and the range is 2.2 mi/kwh. That’s an average for summer and winter and highway and in town. Best Tires for the Ford Lightning - Falken Wildpeak - 14k miles review ua-cam.com/video/lIiK21JML9I/v-deo.html
In the beginning, it seemed to have a little bit of impact on range for about the first 5000-10000 miles maybe - .1 mi./kWh. But after that, it really has seemed to even out to where I can’t tell a difference.
Damn, snow already!? This will be my first winter with my Lightning, I picked it up in the spring, but have Michelin X-Ice tires on 18" wheels (cheaper than trying to get 20" winter tires). The same tires have been great on my previous vehicles, so gave them another shot. So far my efficiency has been comparable, any difference in usage is likely due to thermals (battery and cabin).
Yeah the X-ice is probably the best winter tire so that’s a good call. We actually had more snow in 3 days in November than I’ve ever seen. Probably a total of 18” in three days.
A bunch of people who never used all terrains with the 3 peak mountain snow flake are now going to do on about dedicated winter tires in the comment section. Nice video. Looking forward to putting my LT yokohama geolander Go15s to the test in Canada here shortly.
@@F150LightningMike About 15k miles on them now. They are wearing quite well, minimal effect on range. They are way better with hydroplaning than the factory tires, have yet to do the snow test. Only noisy at low speeds, highway they are quiet. Ride is nice at 50 PSI pressure. Balancing has been great. So far so good I would buy them again (actually they shipped me 5 by mistake, so looks like I only need to buy 3 next time).
How about the people that use all terrains with the 3 peak mountain snowflake in the summer and swap them for winter tires in the winter? Anyone who’s used both knows there’s no comparison.
Yep. I don’t drive aggressive, and im not sure why but the first snow around here people seem to ignore. There are a lot of accidents because of that. The video is sped up so it looks worse, I was going a little under the speed limit. And they are driving about 5-10 over. :-)
My new Maverick Tremor came with Wildpeaks. Good going Jim!
!
That’s great to hear. Yeah these are great tires.
I’m a Texan and I’m not crazy about winter weather, but I did enjoy the video.
Thank you. Yeah sometimes the winters here can be pretty crazy.

Thanks for the reply Mike. Very helpful!
You’re welcome. Let me know if you have any more questions.

It is a little bit more noise, but barely noticeable.
What kind of kw/m arte you averaging and what is temp?

How do your tires affect your range? I have 2023 lightning in Denver area and coming due for tires soon

Good to hear. That’s nice you got a free tire.

I’ve seen people do it, but I just stick with the ATs all the time because of the weather here and how fast the snow melts after it comes.
How has the underbody dealt with the corrosion?
I don’t see any corrosion, but I will wash it on a regular basis to keep the salt off. Always a brushless wash.

@@F150LightningMike i knew the vid sped up, but its the same here in IL on the first snow fall people forget to slow down until they in a ditch
Sounds about right.
