They do look neat, especially if you do any "night" operation. The ground lights seem to have been a railroad option, so some of the ScaleTrains Dash 9s have them and some don't. Thanks for watching!
Very impressive and handsome dash 9 locomotive model, this model is an excellent replica of the very few original cw44-9 locomotives that UP purchased new as all the other dash 9 engines on the UP roster were inherited from C&NW and SP during the railroad mergers of the mid 1990s. Scaletrains produces a large amount of high quality GE locomotive models and these dash 9 engines are impressive as well as being well decorated relating towards roadname specified detail accuracy features. I am satisfied to see a model of a UP dash 9 locomotive since Union Pacific owns a very miniscule number of original dash 9 models that were produced for them.
I was surprised when I did the research for this one and found out that UP only originally had a few of these, and that, as you stated, most of the Dash 9 fleet came from CNW and SP. I'm glad you liked the model. Thanks for watching!
I'm new to the hobby and am really impressed with Scale Trains. I have recently bought my first locomotives: a Rivet Counter (RC) NS GE ES44AC and RC UP GE45ACCTE DCC Ready (the DCC equipped models were sold out), and I have another RC NS ES44AC with DCC on order, as well as an RC UP GE C45AH with DCC. I think that will do for brand new out of the box locos for now... lol! This hobby ain't cheap! I continue to be amazed at how far the hobby has come since I used to do some very basic model railroading with my grandfather in the 90s. Great review and thanks for sharing 🤠
I have a lot of ScaleTrains models, too. They make a good product. Most of the ScaleTrains models I've seen lately are set up for a LokSound 5 with a 21 pin plug, so if you go that route the DCC installation should be pretty easy on the models you bought without it. The nicer models are more expensive these days, but they're also way more detailed than plastic models used to be. Anyway, I'm glad you liked the review. Thanks for watching!
Pretty good UP Dash 9 model! I don’t know a whole lot about those particular units so it’s always great to learn more on them. It’s possible the real 9734 was sent away to Wabtec for rebuilding since UP is doing so for their Dash 9s like other railroads lately.
ScaleTrains has been making some nice models. I'm glad I got to get this one. It's kind of weird for me to think about these things getting rebuilt. These are new engines... or maybe I'm just getting old. LOL. Thanks for watching!
@@DanielCortopassiI mean, you’re not wrong. You got modern units like Dash 8s and Dash 9s going in for rebuild after only 20 years of service, meanwhile you still got 50 year old SD40-2s still kicking around completely as built.
I have quite a few ScaleTrains models myself at this point, so I apparently agree... haha. Seriously, though, they have been making some very nice models. Thanks for watching!
The engine has it. The sound is not as loud (at least not by default) as in some other GE sound sets that I've heard. Many individual sound volumes can be tweaked with CV settings or by using the LokProgrammer, so the compressor sound could probably be turned up if you wanted to do that. Thanks for watching!
I was surprised by that, too. Unless I misunderstood the roster data, that seems to be the case. I'm used to UP ordering large numbers of diesels at a time. 40 is not that much for a huge railroad. Thanks for watching!
Hi Daniel, I wonder what your thoughts are about traction motor details? With a new manufacturer taking the step to model this detail more, would that ever become a metric in your reviews? Great review. Also at 3:34 did you say engineer's side? Thanks again for your work!
Oops. I got a little locomotive dyslexic there. As for traction motor details, to be honest unless it shows when the locomotive is on the rails I'm not that concerned about it. I might mention it in future reviews if a model has them, but my ability to assess correctness would probably be very limited depending on the availability of reference photos. Thanks for watching!
That one was my fault. I was able to push the shell back down and it went back together. I must have dislodged it slightly at some point during the review. Thanks for watching!
Hi Dan that was good Review on the Dash 9 I'm wanting to Acquire at least one or 2 to go with the UP Patched Dash 9's ex S.P.'s that I'm getting from the Hobby Shop I buy from my only Hope turned too little Gripe was when I bought my first Patched S.P. or UP was I wanted the Engine to have Alternating Ditch lights as per Prototype the S.P.'s even after fading into the UP still had there singnature Alternating lights I was hoping that Scale Trains would've adopted & added it too there line up of Patched & painted to Armour Yellow & Grey UP Engines.. What's your thoughts on this Dan it's kind of hard without a Lok Programmer to add the feature because you not only have to set up the sequence so the lights flash when the Horn blows and remains flashing a few seconds after you have to add a slot for your throttle this I believe could've been done at the factory as Scale Trains sets there Ditch Lights on a Separate board that fits perfectly on the front of the frame with individual light tubes.. But its again only minor Gripe if I can get a Lok Programmer I can do the Fix.. I Enjoyed all of the Video Hope to See more & hope to Reply on them.. Take Care.. Allen
The ScaleTrains SP Dash 9s have alternating ditch lights, which is correct. I got roasted for getting that detail wrong in a review so I won't make that mistake again! I am not sure about the patched ex-SP units in UP service. I would assume at some point UP would have switched them over to their own standards, but that's only a guess on my part. You're right that the difference is just a matter of programming. There is a "grade crossing" logic CV for each lighting output that links the flashing to the horn, which can also be changed if you want. You can do it without a LokProgrammer, though it's much easier if you have one. I love ESU decoders, but I will admit that they're a bit of a pain to program if you have to do it with a DCC throttle. Thanks for watching!
I have a few of these scaletrains models and I absolutely love them and want to get a lot more of them, as long as the wife doesn’t find out how much they actually cost 🤣
Haha... I am glad that Nichole is understanding about that. My buying has slowed down in recent years, but I do have a pretty good collection of ScaleTrains models at this point. Thanks for watching!
I have noticed that the horn volume with some of the LokSound 5 equipped models is lower than some of the ones that have the older LokSound 4 or Select. I'm not sure if that's a function of the speaker setup, the sound file, or what. It may also just be a matter of CV volume tweaking. There are a bunch of other horn sounds that can be selected by changing a CV, too. Thanks for watching!
The plows on these recent runs of Dash 9s and Gevos are too low, even though they look more realistic. I've seen people have to sand the bottoms of plows or even move them slightly higher in order to get sufficient clearance
Mine is about .040 inches above the rails, which is about the same clearance I use when attaching an aftermarket plow. I haven't had trouble with that on other models, but I also haven't had the chance to run any of my ScaleTrains Dash 9s on a layout. Thanks for watching!
If you haven't seen it already I did a comparison review of the SP versions of three different Dash 9 models, Athearn Genesis, Kato, and ScaleTrains. Thanks for watching!
Just picked up BNSF 1019,and I am beyond stoked!!
That sounds cool. I don't have any of the BNSF versions. I'm sure they're nice too. Thanks for watching!
Ground lights and walkway lights seem to be recent innovations. They are very realistic and add to the models...

Scaletrains is getting more colorful
To my eye their UP yellow is better than it used to be. Thanks for watching!
Golly they sure are adding more and more features to these locos. Thanks for the review Daniel.
Things have come a long way in recent years for sure. I'm glad you liked the review. Thanks for watching!

Very nice locomotive 🚂 !!!!!
It is. Thanks for watching!
5:56 "The ditch lights don't flash when the horn blows."
Which is correct for UP, right?
I believe so, yes. If not it could be changed by reprogramming the outputs for the ditch lights.
Thanks for watching!
Did you preorder any of the ScaleTrains GP30s, Dan?
Yes, I have a Rio Grande unit coming. I just got billed for it, so I'm hoping it gets here soon. Review to follow. Thanks for watching!
I didn’t hear the air compressor whoop when you ran on the test track. The loksound decoder has it right???
Nope, is seems SXT forgot to add it in.

Nice review Dan. However I think you failed to notice the huge gap at the rear of the long hood and walkway. 10 more points off ?
