Amazing how a handgun round developed and in use for over 100 years is still being improved upon.

  • @richardefriend

What more people should know is that there's a 51 page multi-bullet/caliber analysis for law enforcement (entitled: 2016/17 JOINT AGENCY BALLISTICS TEST FOR DEFENSIVE HANDGUN AMMUNITION) that reached the following unqualified conclusion about the Underwood Xtreme Defender (when compared to 71 different mainstream handgun rounds in 8 calibers): "Overall: This was by far the most impressive round tested. After over a year of testing this round became the most requested round to test after some of the agencies reviewed draft shot data." and "The radial flutes increase tissue pressure and direct the tissue outward to increase wound diameter. ... tests confirmed that in over 100 shots the measured wound channel was not only larger than that of an FMJ but in most cases was the largest wound channel produced in that caliber compared to all other rounds to include fully functioning hollow points." and "All rounds in all calibers tested penetrated 15.2 - 20 inches with and without barriers. " and "Every single shot did roughly the same thing. There is a 0% chance of failure to function because there can be no failure to tumble or expand (because they don’t) and no chance to fragment. This was the most Reliable and Consistent round tested." It's discussed on p. 32-33. That's why I've moved all my 9mm pistols and PCC's with less than a 5" barrel to the Underwood XD 9mm 90 gr. +P, and my .380 ACP to the Xtreme Penetrator 90 gr. (because the very short barrel of the .380 requires a bit more oomph).

Not all JHPs are created equal. Many bonded rounds handle automotive glass and sheet metal quite well. While I think the there is a niche for the Xtreme line, I haven't been convinced that their terminal ballistics is vastly superior to FMJ, much less on par with or superior to JHPs as Lehigh claims. For my own niche, I don't need or care for top-tier intermediate barrier performance. Certainly not at the expense of wounding capacity.

The joint agency ballistics report of 2016-2017 showed that these bullets (specifically the +P and +P+ varieties in all common calibers) outperformed ALL traditional hollow points including the big three (HST, gold dot, CD) in wound cavity volume and barrier performance...the most interesting thing to note is that they created larger wound cavities than any hollow point in any caliber both in gel *and* in meat.
They went on to do an extended test of these types of copper bullets but the information was LEO/Mil only so I have no clue of the results. There are even some agencies that have switched to using these rounds over traditional HPs.

I have purchased the Lehigh rounds in both .380 and 9mm and here are my thoughts. The expense of the round is roughly twice the standard jacketed hollow point from Underwood. Penetration is better (+ 10%). Wound channels are very similar. I didn't feel the extra cost was worth any extra penetration in the 9mm; however, in the .380, where both penetration and cavitation are much improved (as much as 25% with the Lehigh round) it's a clear winner. In fact, jacketed hollow points in the .380 are counter-productive. So, I've decided to use the Lehigh in my .380 and the 124 grain gold dot or XTP in my 9mm.

Most hollow points, even the best ones, fail to expand reliably when a bone simulant is placed in front of the gel. These rounds have no problem with bone and most other barriers. They work every time.

This is the ammo that I use. It was the only ammo to pass every test with every agency, in every caliber, barrel length and test medium of ballistics gel and animal cadavers both with and without barrier penetration. Look up the 2016/2017 Joint Agency Ballistics Test For Handgun Self Defense Ammo. It’s a 52 or 53 page report and on pages 32 and 33, break down the Underwood Xtreme Defender ammo. The ammo is unbelievable and leaves a larger primary wound channel than any fully expanded hollow point in the same caliber. Especially in animal cadavers to simulate real life shooting scenarios where a threat needs to be stopped. You also get less recoil but continued accuracy even after barrier penetration and distances greater than 25 yards. I’ve tested out to 50 yards and found them to be still just as accurate. And the velocity of this ammo is much greater than traditional ammo.

The same was true in the ballistics gel as well. Here’s the thing. I’m never going to be attacked by a block of ballistics gel. But an animal and/or a human, the possibility exists. So while I can look at the ballistics gel data for its numbers, I can also look at closer to real world numbers from that data as well.

I have no issue with them being light for caliber seeing as how they’ll penetrate as much as any other bullet weight in that caliber. If I were using standard hollowpoints, I’d go with 135’s to 147’s. As for Underwood, I’ve shot plenty of their stuff and it’s really great ammunition. And no, I am NOT being paid by them. What sets the Defender apart is it is barrier proof...most notably with plywood and sheet metal tests that deform most hollow points and render their expansion cancelled. The HST and Gold Dots seem to do well with these two barriers and most all other leading hollow points fail these two tests...so HST and G.D. are the top choices for L.E.O's . I prefer the Defender due to it's fluted design that also works on ALL barrel lengths , including SBR's and AR's , where greater velocities ruin the other hollow point's expansion capabilities ( since they are designed to operate at handgun barrel lengths / corresponding velocities ). I also find the Defender softer shooting so for me it just edges out the HST and Gold Dots which are still my #2 and #3 EDC choices.

Very happy you are back at it making vids! I also just got a Glock 43 and I am running Gorilla's new Silverback line of ammo, its 115 grain and looks very close to a Federal HST. Shot it 2 days ago through my G43 and there was almost no recoil. There aren't really any videos reviewing this ammo and would be thrilled if you did a review on Gorillas Silverback ammo in 9mm soon. Thanks!

REPOST from Dennis Anderson- The XD does not work in gel because gel doesn't compress or liquefy, so people claim it doesn't work. In real tissue the nosecone creates a super-cavitation bubble (Google it) which expands the tissue around the bullet and reduces drag. This allows the bullet to maintain it's velocity and rotation as the flutes redirect compressed liquefied tissue outward at up to 75% faster than the speed of the bullet. It acts like a rotating water jet blasting surrounding tissue as the bullet passes. Super-cavitation is incorporated in missile and torpedo design and a water jet can cut through 3" of steel. This is proven technology. The “2016/17 Joint Agency Ballistic Test For Defensive Handgun Ammunition” says "Overall: This was by far the most impressive round tested".
    nebula.wsimg.com/d0ba783a795f1cef262aa1027d14a092?AccessKeyId=6BF38C5AD5E3222E4D9B&disposition=0&alloworigin=1
"Many of our testers wondered if vectoring real compressed tissue sideways into tissue would actually destroy that adjacent tissue that is not directly in the path of the projectile ... we can confirm that this technology works extremely well in actual animal tissue with or without barriers. Remember that hollow points expand because tissue which fills the hole in the hollow point is compressed to such a point that the outward pressure inside the bullet pushes and tears the metal and forces it outward where friction then takes over to complete the expansion. If tissue can be compressed to the point of tearing metal (hollow point) then tissue can certainly be compressed to the point of tearing tissue. The Phase 4/5 tissue tests confirmed that in over 100 shots the measured wound channel was not only larger than that of an FMJ, but in most cases was the largest wound channel produced in that caliber compared to all other rounds to include fully functioning hollow points"

I think it's some of the best stuff out there. Some people "CLAIM" the impressive wound channels in gel won't be the same as wound channels in people yet they love certain types of JHP ammo because of impressive sound channels in gel. This stuff doesn't have to worry about expanding to do what it's supposed to do.

This pretty much sells me on these projectiles. I prefer heavy for caliber loads for their deeper penetration. Light weight, fast expanding hollow points scare me a little if your intended target is on the other side of a door, sofa, or car windshield. Also, from what I've seen, keep in mind this is solely from good ol internet info, once a hollow point passes though a solid object like drywall or a windshield they seem to fail to expand more often than not. With these projectiles, objects don't matter much unless they cause them to tumble or flip backwards. Which could just as easily happen to a hollow point anyways. You have provided so much outstanding content!

Lehigh penetrators are a great choice for backup guns for hunting or just backpackers or hikers, for urban areas not so much due to the over penetration, but these Lehigh defense loads are great, in the clear ballistics it's a little hard to tell because clear ballistics doesn't show the full permanent wound cavity very well but it's a great way to test multiple rounds on civilian budget, military arms channel did a test on these with real ballistics gel and the cavitation is insane and actually outperformed federal hst repeatedly

Same here, I exclusively carry these. A huge bonus is that I buy these bullets for reloading, it actually makes it affordable enough to practice with it as well, and I can tweak the loading for my personal preference. You can't buy HST's, Gold Dot or any other major self defense bullet by itself, which makes affording them to train with out of my budget.

+p+ is higher pressure loads than the +p. So greater penetration which, probably isn't good for a self defense round. Better for hunting or shot out of a 9mm carbine. Just stick to +p because +p+ can damage your gun unless you change the recoil springs

Man im getting more and more impressed with these after taking some coyotes with the 115 gr 10mm version, even Andrew at the chopping block didn't think much of them at first but even his test shows the flutes definitely due something, maybe not 2x a jhp something but I definitely think it leaves wounds equal to light for caliber jhps but they are barrier blind and get VERY good penetration even with the low weight and terrible sectional density, I guess the bullet design and construction is making up for that with it small frontal area which helps penetration, very interesting results and I like the penetration

tnoutdoors9, please consider testing Underwood Ammo's SKU #851, .32 ACP +P 55 gr. Xtreme Defender loaded to 1050 fps.
Underwood used a tiny Kel Tec P-32 (short barrel) for testing and indicate it achieved 15.5" of penetration in calibrated ballistic gel, and yet it showed a permanent wound cavity BETTER than any JHP load in .32 ACP they've tested. If their test is repeatable it would be a GAME CHANGER for many people who NEED a tiny gun for a backup, or for civilian carry when minimal, lightweight clothing absolutely prohibits a significantly larger weapon (100+ degrees days at 70%+ humidity in the South can break your will for "dressing around" your firearm). One has to actually hold a Kel Tec P-32 in their hands to appreciate just how diminutive and concealable it really is.
.32 ACP has in recent years been generally considered "too weak" for defensive use. If these rounds perform as advertised it could open up a whole new class of alternate carry possibilities...and they DID perform for you in 9mm! Conventional wisdom says a .32 ACP "won't work;" conventional wisdom is often wrong until a pioneer discovers the pathway to success.
