Nôtre - Suite du 1er Ton - Dreifaltigkeits Organ, Ottobeuren, Hauptwerk

  • Jean-Baptiste Nôtre was a French composer and organist. The Suite du 1er Ton is from a collection of Nôtre's pieces called 'Livres de piesses d’orgue par l’organiste de Toul', which contains eight suites, ordered by ton. I swapped the 8th and the 9th part of this suite, since I liked to close with the grander sounding 8th part (bombarde included). The parts of this suite are quite short. Therefore excellent to show some different French sides of this wonderful Dreifaltigkeits Organ of Karl Joseph Riepp in just a few minutes. This sample set by OrganArt Media is still in bèta test phase.
To decide which registrations to use (always a tricky business with French baroque and classical organ music) I used Roland Lopes' excellent 'Tables de Registrations pour la musique d'orgue française du XVIe au XIXe siècle'. In this paper suggestions about registrations of Nôtre's organ pieces are available. Also there are notes about registrations of French music on the Riepp organ (1768) of the Abbaye de Salem. Since the Riepp organ of Ottobeuren was built in 1766, I had to take these notes seriously. In the end I used suggestions of both Nôtre and Riepp and tried to make a nice synthesis of it.

My God, what I'm waiting for this sample set. About 10 years ago I was able to play this organ, an experience I will never forget.
You have really found a beautiful, diverting suite. It was a pleasure to listen to.

That must have been a great experience, I can imagine that. Thanks for listening, Nils-Ole. And you have to wait probably some months until the final release of this set, sorry ;)

This style an excellent model for improving French Classical suites. Short yet effective.

Yes, I like it when a composer keeps it short (but not simple, that basse de trompette took me some time to record properly)

Brilliant. Thanks for your wonderful playing and interpretation. Beautiful organ, one of the best in the world in my view. I loved Richter's performance of the Bach d-minor on this organ. It's still sounding good even in hauptwerk form.

Thanks, Matt! Yes, Richter is the man who made this organ very famous. The sample set is very realistic, luckily. It gives a good impression of how it sounds for real.

What a nice little Suite, it shows the typical movements of a french baroque suite in a compact form. I might try to learn it to for future concerts! ;)
And very beautiful, that OrganArt also sampled the "Dreifaltigkeitsorgel" at Ottobeuren, which perfectly accompains the already exsisting "Heilig-Geist Orgel"!

Ok think Austin Powers and say "yeah baby!" One of my favorite organs. Has mild and sweet stops as you opened with and some great French reeds. Unfortunately not to many Reip organs survived unmolested. This is one of the larger ones well preserved and speaking with all the power and glory as when it was new. An interesting suite Ralph. My first exposure to this Organ was a disc by Jan Overduin. And after that I found Karl Richter playing Bach on it via UA-cam videos. To bad I cannot find higher quality recordings. Wonderful sound, great sample set Thanks for making performance.

P.S. I really appreciate that you give us the sheet music. Keeps it a little more interesting.

    • @RalphLooij
      @RalphLooij  Рік тому +2

Thanks for your appreciation, Mark! It's a shame that only these two, the small and big Riepp of Ottobeuren, were well preserved. On the other hand, it makes it very unique, especially because they are both in the same church.
I know that disc by Overduin. At first I found it rather curious that he recorded the complete organ works of the North German composer Georg Leyding on this organ, not a match on paper. However, in reality it works rather well. It shows that this organ can handle a lot.

@@RalphLooij This was my first exposure to the power of a French Organ. The Bombarde and the trumpets were just so exhilarating. SIlbermann too has some powerful reeds but this organ has a different balance. I listened to the Silbermann in Dresden in the early 80's on Teldec. That was on a cassette tape! I have been in awe of the music that can be created using the creative genius of the builders and the performance capabilities of the organists. I have reviewed quite a few great recordings over the years. And this organ is one that deserves more exposure.

@@KravchenkoAudioPerth I hope that I can contribute a little to that with this Hauptwerk sample set. Of course that raises the question (for some) what's best: a CD recording or Hauptwerk recording. At least I don't have to travel back and forth to Ottobeuren to just play some wonderful organ works on the organ :) Although nothing beats playing the real thing.

I didn't know this composer, thank you for your interpretation. His music is really interesting because it mixes Baroque French suites and a more modern, classical style. The music is clearly less "horizontal", the trio especially striked me because it's normally very easy to follow the different voices in a Baroque French trio. Do you know other French composers in the same period? I only know Balbastre and I'm not sure he composed similar stuff

    • @RalphLooij

Thanks, Waldemar! There are many composers from this period, known and quite unknown, for example Corrette, Benaut, Séjan, Armand-Louis Coupering etc.
