Saxer - Fuge in C-Dur / C major - Van Vulpen organ, Rotterdam, Hauptwerk
Georg Wilhelm Dietrich Saxer († 1740, Lübeck) was a German composer and organist of the North German organ school. Not much is known about his life. Saxer was initially organist in Celle, then in Lüneburg, where he worked first at St. Lamberti and from 1734 at St. Johannis. From 1737 until his death in 1740, Saxer was organist at the Jakobikirche in Lübeck.
This fugue in C major is from a Leipziger manuscript, the composer isn't mentioned. However, Saxer is probably the composer. It consists of three expositions. In ieach of these expositions the fugue theme is played 6 times in a row. The three expositions are joined by two short episodes. The music does not venture outside the tonic and the dominant. It is however a lively and entertaining fugue and a joy to play.
Played on the organ model of the neobaroque Dutch Van Vulpen organ, with a tight plenum and a strong pedal division. I didn't even couple the Hoofdwerk to the pedal division, it's still very strong with the grumpy Bazuin 16', which works great in this piece I think.
Sample set of the Van Vulpen organ (1966) of the Hoflaankerk in Rotterdam, sampled by Sygsoft Holland:

Christian David Graff worked as organist at Kirche St. Ulrich und Levin in Magdeburg from 1719 until his death in 1774. He was a pupil of Johann Bernhard Bach (a cousin of J.S. Bach). In the past Graff was considered a pupil from J.S. Bach, but that isn't true, probably the cause of a confusion between J.S. and J.B. Bach. Christian David Graff was organist of a Schnitger organ in Magdeburg. So ...

To conclude this week of the Reformation Day another Lutheran hymn with a clearly different character than 'Ein feste Burg'. This hymn was one of the first hymns Luther wrote in 1524 (now 500 years ago). Johann Heinrich Buttstett wrote a fine setting on this hymn. Some deft pedal and manual work there, Ralph. Bravo!

Stunning ! Played with energy and conviction.
Thanks!
👍 wunderbar 👍 danke, merci villmools 👍merci beaucoup 👍🇱🇺
Danke!
Ralph - you remain a master when it comes to ornamentation, creating the most thoughtful and provocative renditions of these lesser known works. Thank you for another spectacular upload.
Thanks very much, Christopher!
An excellent opportunity to listen to this composer and indeed pipe organ set, thanks Ralph.😊
Thanks!
Merci!
This is another great discovery for which I am thankful. And the organ fits the piece very nicely, the “grumpy” Bazuin is perfect! Special thanks!
Thanks!
So boring
;)
What great pedal playing! So clear. Great!
Thanks!
I didn't know that he wrote fugues, I remember only his strange preludium in e minor)
Yes, but that piece has some nice parts too. His prelude in D is quite nice.
Pleased to have come across another of your postings and am particularly impressed by the effect of your registration, which certainly makes for most enjoyable listening.
Thanks, Stephen!
What a fugue! 😍Thema fugatum looks like that one by Bach BWV 543 (a miner fugue), but factory of fugue mimics BWV 577 G major fugue :D nice and fresh composition ☺
Also reminded me a little of the 543 fugue! Although Bach’s A Minor is a right bugger to play!
True, some elements are there, although less complicated than Bach (obviously)
A beautiful rendition Ralph! What a lively, uplifting fugue.
Thanks, Rien!
Very dramatic performance with a temperament that makes the music come alive still more. What temperament is it?
Thanks, Barry! It's 1/4 Meantone, which is wonderful (for certain music)
Ralph I like your organ setup, btw what tablet are you using for the scores and do you find it satisfactory or too small? Thank you
Thanks, Chuwi HI12, no.
Rather a beautiful organ. Thanks for the posting.
It is, thanks.
Wonderful performance I give new support here musical friend 😊
Thanks for your support and membership.
Krieger heeft veel mooie muziek nagelaten. Deze kende ik nog niet. Mooi gespeeld Ralph!
Dank, Nils! Eentje uit het archief, jaren geleden opgenomen.
It's raw yet unbelievably elegant... the song as well as it's interpretation ist lifting up my soul ❤
Thanks!
Delightful, Ralph. And what a great addition to the Sweelinq organ line-up.
Thanks, Marcus!
Wonderful Choral so well played but so short!
The hymn isn't any longer ;)
That's jazzy
Kind of, yes ;)
Sweelinq now how 16 sample sets and they’re included in 100 eur per year subscription price. Maybe the variety of sample sets is not yet as big as in HW but it’s like 10x cheaper than HW with that many sample sets. The main question, is there a noticeable difference that you’re not playing with church acoustics? As far as I’m concerned, I couldn’t tell that it’s not HW just by listening. A beautiful Homilius trio of course adds to the pleasure of listening.
True, and I heard some great organs are coming (Bätz organ Den Haag, Zaltbommel etc.) which probably never will be sampled for Hauptwerk. Price-quality is simple better than Hauptwerk, because Sweelinq is very cheap in comparison (that's probably their sales technique on purpose for coming years to catch more new users). It's not perfect, but I know many HW sample sets which aren't perfect too, depending on how good the sample set producer is. Besides that, the user interface, loading/installation times are much more user friendly. By the way, they do use the original church acoustics, but only by adding the reverb file of the church instead of recording the acoustics in the sample (as is done mostly with HW sample sets).
@ Wow thanks Ralph for explanation. I didn’t know they could add original church reverb file. Sweelinq poses serious competition for HW both the platform and sample set producers (especially new ones) with its light and user-friendly interface. And of course incremental HW version upgrades (mostly interface improvements) cost almost the same as a year of Sweelinq subscription. No brainer, if you ask me. And we haven’t even mentioned Davido yet…
Merci !
Merci!
Merci du partage ! très beau ! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐🙂
Merci!
Thanks for showcasing another gem, Ralph. I always look forward to seeing what you will come up with next.
Thanks, Bill!
Very interesting! It’s a beautiful hymn, very well played. But if you play this one with a brassband it could be a carnavals piece! Hahaha.
Only a 'Brabander' can come up with that ;)
Very beautiful piece and registration!
Er hat immer grandiose Register gezogen
Thanks!
Dank!
Estremamente interessante!
thanks
Scheidt is very didactical in his organ works: he always gives instructions before the scores. Just a question, Ralph: With whom did/do you study the organ practice?
True. But his music can be played different ways (manual only, pedal in cf etcetera). Currently no one. I studied with a teacher you surely don't know in my teenage years. After that I mainly sung in early music ensembles and as soloists. In 2020 I picked up my organ playing again.
A very nice arrangement to this beautiful melody dear Ralph, it's great the way you play it.
Thanks!
Fantastic!
Thanks!
This chorale arrangement is a very beautiful piece, dear Ralph!
Wow very nice 👍
Thanks!
I have to ask how you're pedaling those groups of four in the initial pedal solo. They're wonderfully smooth and well-executed.
I must admit bars 4 till 7 are the hardest part of this piece to play. I don't use heels (as is most authentic for playing baroque organ pieces). So it's a matter of using your left and right foot in a clever manner. Take the first row of 16th notes in bar 4 on the last count. I use: right, left, right, left, left, right, left, right, left. And so on with the other sequences. When playing left-left, i sort of slide my foot from one pedal note to the other to make it sound less staccato. It helped with this organ that the acoustics are quite big, so it covers up bigger gaps between notes. Playing this in dry acoustics, would probably sound less convincing.
Very pretty Prelude on a lovely organ.
Thanks!
Short and powerful piece! Perfect as the introduction of some hymn in Bb major like Valet will ich dir geben.
True!
Hätte Bach gewusst, was wir heute wissen, hätte er das Stück nicht komponiert. Es gab nie Götter und Jesus auch nicht! Danke Wissenschaft!
Speaks the atheist... So in your case you believe too, but in science. Luckily there is no hymn that is called 'Allein der Wissenschaft sei Ehr'.
Great playing Ralph! :-)
Thanks, Rien!
I love the contrasting registrations. The lighter 8, 4, 1 1/3 is very attractive. 👏👏👏
Thanks, Andrew!
Beautiful Ralph 👏👏👏
Thanks, Peter!
I didn't know this one! Nice result with these stops.
Thanks!
Wunderschöne Nummer, genial gespielt. Auch die gezogenen Register klingen schön. Schade daß es nicht länger war
Danke!
Beautiful Ralph!😁👍👏👏👏
thanks
It's a comfortable performance to listen to! Beautiful! Ralph 🫶🫶🫶
Thanks!
A fine example of beautiful, yet accessible baroque music. I’m happy you share this kind of “easy” music too. It can inspire less experienced organists to try them out.
I agree: one of my favorites.
Thanks, Rien!
Thans for listening, Kathy!
This is very nice!
Thanks!
