You should build a Hydroponic wall garden outside your back yard :) I built a small one and will doing it again. Ashton, I should have left the us decades ago when I was seeing it deteriorate but now I am over 50 it might be difficult for me to obtain employment based my age.

      A WHITE couch????!!!!!
      WIth kids in the house?
Ashton..... No matter what you smoke... I want the same :D ;)
And I noticed that just like us, you don't have "Hochschränke" in your kitchen. Is it possible, that you're not the tallest?

@@LK-pc4sq depends on your profession. In Germany we lack all kinds of employees in all kinds of industries. So it should be easy to find a job in Germany at the moment.

Thanks for your "Tag der offenen Tür", walking tru your lovely house, almost every room. And whilst some being curious about Jack's room or the great view you spare for exactly privacy reasons, everyone should respect that and value that you share so much. The ups and downs of the building process. It's so nice and that you overcame the hustle, after Ashton's PhD, you're on the right track. Enjoy free castle Freiburg!

Don't know the weather where you live. In western Netherlands, the buildings had large window to open and lock in position while fresh air blows inside. I asked a friend who lived in an equivalent attic apartment what did she do on warm days if it was too hot in her home. "Go out and have a beer."

I think after all the stress and effort that went into building the house for you, you know why we in Germany see building or buying a house as something of a lifetime. Congratulation to your new house. May you find peace, security and happiness in it.❤

LOL I recently minimized my Diele (entryway) because who needs jackets in Germany in June, July, August, or September? And why are my muck boots still out when I haven't seen mud since April? Suddenly it was all echoey in there, and I love it.

Hi, i really like your content and that you share all this with us. 1 little tip from an Electrician, please keep in mind that the voltage in Germany at your outlets is 230VAC and this is really not a joke and can be very dangerous. For a safer life of your kids i can recommend you special plugs for your outlets to keep them close.

There is a saying in Germany: the 1st home, u build for your mother-in-law, a no, your enemy!, the 2nd for your friend and the 3rd is for you. Since I'm as you at the 1st stage, I think u did a pretty good job. I talked to a lot of people, that build a new home (wir installieren PV-Anlagen) and even the stage II guys told me about things, they would never do again. So every time u think this sucks, think about the times u rent and the improvements, especially with a young child. GJ, Black forest Family. I rely enjoyed this series about your new home.
Btw. We live in an Area with 40 new houses: there are ~40 garage fridge, because the beer doesn't cool on its own ;-)

Gday BFF, congratulations 👏 very tastefully decorated, love your entry art, very welcoming and uncluttered as you mentioned. Your internal decor could fit beautifully into an Aussie home too. Love the neutral colour scheme, natural timber look, white and black, allows for artwork to be really shown off. I really respect you respecting Jack’s and your privacy. Never apologise for that! You share so much of yourselves through your channel. Some things must be kept sacred🥰 Sending lots of blessings for your home and family 😘😘😘

12:54 I gasped when I saw your wardrobe: If I'm not mistaken, that's two Ikea wardrobes, which brings back memories for us. During the pandemic, we got one wardrobe from Ikea while they were just starting to have supply chain issues, and it felt like a Scandinavian scavenger hunt to go to different stores just to get the pieces we wanted. Then all the stress of drilling into the walls in a condo with metal studs, to balancing the units and then putting them together while still working our jobs during the day. We went slow and it took 5 weeks (partially apathy, partially part supplies).
All this to say that if you got *both* done in 3-5 days, you did a fabulous job!!!
This is just one seemingly "small" aspect of what you would have had to contend with.
Congratulations on finally moving in, and thank you for another amazing video!

I was waiting what the "most American things ever" would turn out to be when you said it in the intro, and was surprised that it was the second fridge! I'm Austrian, and I know several families who have one of those. Traditionally, you'd just have an extra freezer, but these days more people prefer a second fridge/freezer combination. None of the families I know who have a second fridge in the storeroom or cellar consider it an American thing.

    • @haukenot3345
      @haukenot3345 2 роки тому +1

Exactly what I was thinking. In my experience, it's often not even a concious decision. You move into a new place or decide to upgrade your kitchen, and you end up with a spare fridge. You start to use it as a back-up because you find it convenient, and then you just keep it as long as it doesn't overly clutter your place. Nowadays, more people are re-selling or donating their old kitchen gadgets, but in my grandparents' generation, that didn't really happen that much, apart from passing them on within the family.

What I really wanted to know about building the new house, was a lot more detail about the construction techniques. You mentioned poured walls, but somehow also we’ll insulated. What of the infrastructure - plumbing, wiring, heating (which I assume is radiant in-floor). What materials used are different than US homes? How do you alter or add infrastructure, if you need to add a plumbing fixture or additional electrical outlets, should the need arise? And a cost comparison with American home construction per square unit area would be nice. Also, what climate are you located in? Are temperature or precipitation extreme compared to your US place of origin? Are you allowed to perform work on your house, or are you required to hire licensed contractors?

Congratulations, Dr. Ashton and Jonathan! At the time in your life with a child, a single family home is perfect and you’ve struck the balance between American creature comforts and European cosiness. Its been a long wait for sure to get your dream home but judging by the reveal, its definitely been all worth it. Jack will love growing up there. In closing, I would say the hardest part was picturing what it looked like when it was being built, how it would all come together the way you guys pictured it, but those worries in the end came to naught with how well put together and inviting your home looks. This is a true labour of love for you guys and while you will do many more amazing things in your life, nothng will matter as much as the satisfaction and joy of having your first home! Again, heartfelt greetings!

Wow, wow, wow, what a great house. I am stunned. Everything is really tasteful, modern yet cozy. I don't know what a house at this level would look like in the US, but it already looks quite European to me. At 16:47 I see again the love you and Ashton puts in your home. Even the little edge (2cm) above the floor, you've painted. 👍 I love that.
To keep this part of the wall clean over time, think about a kind of protection, maybe plexiglass or a metal plate (above your painted line the first 50cm).

The house looks fabulous! It always amazes me that people put so much thought and effort into furnishing their houses. I hate shopping for furniture and so on (actually, I hate shopping in general!), and I tend to be very minimalistic and functional.
When I decided to move six years ago after living in the same flat for 22 years, there were two things from the previous flat that I said had to be in the new one: underfloor heating and an additional half-bath. What a godsend that is!
A third thing, actually. Since I had in the meantime purchased a car, the new place had to have an assigned parking space in a garage of some sort. That was indeed wise. For a number of reasons, street parking in my neighborhood has become almost impossible. When I came back from London last week, I took a car-sharing vehicle to come home from the airport. It took me longer to find a parking space than it did to drive here from the airport!
    Enjoy your new home!

    • @TypeAshton
      @TypeAshton  2 роки тому +1

Totally get it with the parking space. We did carsharing for 3 years, but prior to that Jonathan had an older car that we kept around. But since we lived in Old Town in an apartment without dedicated parking, we were constantly having to hunt for a free space amongst all of the tourists. Half of the time we didn't even use the car because we didn't want to have to deal with finding a new parking spot when we came back. 😂

Happy for you that you finally moved into your house. Could you do a video about the differences/quality of the house. Example: Front door, sturdiness, how many locks/bolts around the frame, airtight.. Windows, 2 or 3 pane, how many bolts around the frame, material, soundproof, Rolladen... Heating system, floor heating, thermostat, per room individually... Faucets and water, water always circulating to prevent growth of bacteria... Kitchen, all bottom drawers, no cabinets on the bottom, quality if the kitchen, induction oven, dishwasher and fridge in kitchen design... Insulation of the house, how thick are the walls, concrete or stone, how thick is insulation...
Thanks and have a wonderful time at your new house.

    Dear Black Forest family,
Congratulations on your beautiful house and I wish you that you will enjoy it for the rest of your life.
Dear Ashton, A house is like a child, it takes time to finish. It took your son Jack 9 months to get ready to enter this world, your house will take a little longer and it will never really be finished. It lives with you, it grows with you and it changes with you. But it will always be the center of your family life, the place where you greet your friends and the place you retreat to when the world wants a little too much of you. And Ashton - as far as order in your office is concerned - remember: only the genius can master chaos, the rest fail at it. So keep your head up - keep calm and look forward to what's to come.
With this in mind, you three have a nice Sunday and warm greetings from the north.

First of all, welcome to Germany. I must congratulate you for your very good research, I learn even with your videos still a lot about Germany and it's really fun. It is also something like looking in a mirror, I have often recognized me.
I work for an English company, I had to realize that UK and USA are closer together than UK with the continent. We Germans are often the over engineers and the AngelSchsen the foil painters. As always it depends on the mixture. Your contributions promote the reduction of prejudices, keep it up.
What has surprised mic in UK and USA. How can you build windows that open from the bottom up and they can not be opened and cleaned from the inside.
    Greetings to the Black Forest.

    Wish you all the best!

Your entry way is lovely and your reasons for making it sound very reasonable. We're a kiwi-german household in Ba-Wu and our entrance smells like toe-jams & bike oil- thank Buddha we can close that entrance off. So it's like an anti-guest entrance.🤣😂
We have a pantry too - my favourite place to hide everything AND an extra toilet, bidet AND urinal so fancy!!
We're also in a 3 level + basement + garage duplex so we feel very German bougie. 😉🤣
P.s I love the blackforest & nature here too which is a must for me being from the land of Hobbits & Orcs 😉

Kitchen counter top:: you guys might want to re-consider and maybe abandon granite, bcause it blunts your knives .. and can be etched by cleaners containing organic acis. You might want to contemplate if plywood coated with >1mm melamine resin paper suits your preferences (and can be delivered before the end of the century ;-) ). This surface is kind to your knives and lasts forever (stay away from the cheap Baumarkt junk, though). Greets and keep up the videos! Bernhard

Thank you very much for showing us your fantastic house! I like very much what you have made out of it, especially the lighting. I love the lamp over the table in the dining area and I think it's the same design like the lamp over the mirror in the lower bathroom. I also like the black fittings in the upper bathroom and the black sink in the kitchen.
The colours and furniture in the entire house are so well planned and nice looking, without a doubt you could make a lot of money of planning those things for other people. Another highlight is the garage! Great choice of tools and wall mounts. The only thing I would have done different is the colour of the walls. I would choose grey, because one day you will hit the wall with a wheel of your bike.

That's a good idea. I would like to also put a stainless steel panel on the wall behind my work bench to protect the wall while I'm working, but painting would be a great idea behind the bikes.

Jonathan, your work bench urgently needs a good plain vise to fix single work pieces for filing, drilling, grinding et cetera. Don't forget chuck jaws of aluminum and plastic to protect sensitive pieces. . . tipp of an old handicraftsman 😎

@@TypeAshton The larger, the better. 😊 But 150mm width would be sufficient. Useful would be an integrated small straightening plate - and, when you mount the vise, let it overhang in front, so you are able to clamp long pieces reaching the floor . . .

You have a wonderful home and I hope you enjoy many happy years in it, thank you for opening your lovely home to us! Small rooms do actually look and feel larger once furnished and decorated. My daughter lives in a small studio apartment and at first she went for absolute minimal and functional furnishing and decor, however a friend convinced her to do more with the room and once she filled it with wall art, plants, cushions and a rug it felt much larger!

I'm am traditionalist, I grew up in a 6500 square foot house that was full of antiques, built in 1901 it was a Spanish Colonial, it was a very formal house, our summer house was a huge Victorian built in 1890, filled with summer furniture. If your home is American style, it's mid century modern. I'm not into stark myself, but every one has different taste.

You have a lovely home. I like the idea of a white couch in a small room. Our house has a combination living/dining space, and our couch is dark gray. It does make the space look somewhat smaller. We are planning to install ceiling fans in all of our rooms as well. We are even considering a small air conditioner system in our guest room, which is in the attic. Our temperatures here in Upper Harz are not that bad by Oklahoma standards, but the attic does get a bit warm. Thank you for sharing your home with us.

    Gratulations ! Very very nice.
Its friendly and modern at the same time and seems very inviting.
We finished our house in 2018 and implemented a very similar stile and didnt regret one bit of it.
My wife had the same worries about space before we moved in although we planned the whole house and every detail together on the computer - but it seems that the empty rooms look smaller then they are. sure some psychological thing.
All the best for your family and a happy life at your new home !

Hi guys! It was fantastic to see your beautiful home! I envy you the second fridge, but I haven’t got room, so well thought out there! I‘d be very interested in which expert opinions/contractors were useful and not. We built and it was a heck of an adventure, as artists with an artist budget! Outside was supposed to be finished but then the pandemic hit, so we‘ve lived with the outside not being finished, still the makeshift steps to the front door, since we moved in. We want to finish it now - if the for us necessary workers can find time, but we‘re so nervous about it, since our industry has been hit so hard. But we also don’t want to look like we don’t care, because we really do and we appreciate living in a village where everyone takes such pride in the smartness of everywhere, from the communal areas, to their front drives.
