- We had planned for a caesarean section (Kaiserschnitt), but the NICU stay afterwards was definitely "unexpected". Come along with us on this very personal birth vlog where we share our story of giving birth in Germany as a foreigner. A special 'Dankeschön' to the doctors, nurses, midwives and support staff for their exceptional care. Our son is happy and healthy today because of your efforts and we will always been eternally grateful for the high quality of universal healthcare in Germany.

We're glad that you felt so well taken care of with us. Wishing you all the best!
Thank you all SO much 💜💜
Uniklinik Freiburg is the best, they saved my life twenty years ago. And i made a lot of trouble there when i got my temporary wheel chair after i could leave my bed after weeks.
"Das ist keine Rennstrecke" With me on board, it kind of was though. 😂
Thanks for the amazing work you do.
sehr gute Arbeit!
Props to the experienced doctor who HEARD that something was not okay.
Absolutely!! We just happened to catch this on a non-routine ultrasound. Allowed us to monitor the issue for 11 weeks and make the educated decision on when to get the baby early in order to save his life.
So glad to hear that everything turned out well for you guys !
Thank you so, so much.
Oh, am I ever crying for you. I'm crying with relief and joy both. I'm crying not only for all the normal good things (medical technology and supportive community) but, as an American, I'm crying with relief this happened in Germany where the surgery, your hospital stay, and Theo's NICU stay won't bankrupt your family. I'm so glad financial devastation isn't added to your transitioning to a family-of-four challenges. And my heartfelt congratulations to you all. May kindness swaddle your family in your journey together.
Yes, it helps when the medical complications happen where healthcare is considered a basic human right, and one of the main purposes for the very existence of the government.
@@bazoo513 In America, they do even consider health insurance and cheap health care to be "against freedom": "You don't have the right to demand someone's work." and "You must not be forced by the government to buy something (=health insurance)"
@@MarcLeonbacher-lb2oe Yeah, I know. OTOH, paying taxes for "littoral combat vessels" and "modular" destroyers that go straight from the shipyard to the scrapyard, or half a trillion dollar "joint" fighter that is actually three different planes that have difficulty winning a dogfight against their half a century old predecessor is perfectly all right.
Priorities....
🤦♂
And, BTW, in 1790, the first Congress, in which 20 framers sat, required all ship owners to provide medical insurance for seamen; in 1798, Congress also required seamen to buy hospital insurance for themselves. In 1792, Congress enacted a law mandating that all able-bodied citizens* obtain a firearm. (It appears that _this_ was "well regulated militia" the second amendment refers to.)
*) OK, white, male, non-enslaved, but still....
I can relate to it. My sons were both born in Freiburg (Josephs) and my daughter by C-section, too. Congrats and blessings to all of you!
27 years ago I was in this Uniklinik and got our second daughter in week 29/6. Also a C-section. It took us 7 weeks to get her home, but without the amazing people there, the nurses and the doctors, it might have been that none of us (my daughter and me) would have come home.
She has become an amazing adult, she is and was healthy her whole life since then and we are so grateful of this - then and now and forever. So even when a start is humbly there will be light.
All the best for you Ashton, your family and your wonderful little Theo🧚♀️
I never thought that the details of such a journey could be turned into a good video. The tour is one I experienced three times (for two living children), so I recognized most of it and could see it from the outside. Congratulations on having come out "successful" on the other side!! Thanks and full credit to your doctors and staff!
Ah thank you so much. For us, the most difficult part of the NICU experience was the unknown. In the beginning, we were told that he would only need "one or two days"... but then it turned into three, four.... and eventually six in total. In the grand scheme of things it is hardly any time at all, but being separated from him was tough. Theo was definitely the man in control and we just had to go with the flow and pace that he needed. So incredibly thankful for the care that we received and the guidance of the doctors, nurses, midwives and staff.
Before our youngest was born, we knew things would be "complicated." But nothing prepares you for the moment they call you over and tell you they're taking your newborn to the Intensivstation (in our case, before my wife had even held him). It was almost a month, including my first trip riding with blue-lights and sirens when he was transferred to another hospital, before we finally got to bring him home. But the joy when you finally get home is all the better for it. Wishing you all the best.
So you lost one. Really sad. 😢
@@susannabonke8552 Thank you for the empathy. That was very rough - but now lies in the distant past.
Dear Black Forest Family, congratulations for and welcome to Theo!
Ashton, you made me tear up when you told us about the complications in your pregnancy and with Theo. I am so happy that Theo and you are both well now! And thanks to Jonathan for your reporting.
Love, health and happiness to you five (I am counting the dog as family member)! ❤
Congratulations! Don't worry! My eldest son came in 29th week of pregnancy and had a weight of 1.085gramm. Now he is 24 years old and way more tall, strong, healthier ....
My second boy made it to the 34th week and had 2.400 g. Which is also not much. No ICU was needed.
Nowadays i am a proud father of two strong, healthy boys. Capable living in their own.
Everything will be good!
First of all congratulations. Much love to all of you. Secondly, I fully get that feeling of gratitude. My son developed severe epilepsy at the age of eight. It was sudden and dramatic. For years now he has had a team of people working so hard to care for him. Not just the doctors and nurses who themselves are incredible but family, the staff in his schools, neighbours, friends and even complete strangers who have rushed to help in emergencies. You can say the words 'thank you' as many times as you want but I doubt they really understand just how deeply, deeply grateful you are when people help the child you love. He is doing much better now thanks to some new treatment and again I'm so grateful to the people who worked to develop the latest drugs. I should say we live in the UK so are also deeply grateful for the NHS. We've never had a medical bill.
I wish your family all the happiness in the world and look forward to your future videos.
We are so, so grateful for "our village" of friends. Being so far away from family is always tough in situations like these. We can't just call grandma or grandpa to help babysit when we need to rush to the NICU (and unfortunately, Jack was not allowed to visit in the NICU). We really are so grateful for our friends in the same way you are to yours. It makes a world of a difference.
just a shame our current government is ideologically against universal healthcare and wants a privatised profiteering system.
As a father of twins I know how it feels if they come earlier. Welcome little man. You chosen great parents.
wow, that was emotional, phew. Theo is the most beautiful name I could have imagined. If he only knew what wonderful parents he got. For now, take good care of yourselves, enjoy the summer, don't work too much and rest together. Im glad for you.
Thank you so much. We really think the name fits him perfectly and are so thankful to have him with us. ❤❤
Dear Theo, I welcome you and wish you all the happiness in the world. It's so good to see a story with a little happy ending. Thank you also, Ashton, Jonathan and Jack, for sharing these not so easy moments with us. Enclosed is a little welcome gift....
Looking forward to new content and wishing you all the best.
Best regards from Berlin.
Oh wow thank you so, so much! That is so incredibly kind of you and we sincerely appreciate it. ❤️❤️
Herzlichen Glückwunsch! Und Kleiner, mit dieser Familie sollst Du ein tolles Leben haben!
Blessings to you all from an American-German family of 4 from Berlin. Our children and 4 and 1 so the experience of the second birth and the introduction to the older sibling are very relatable to me. Just as the level of care and attention we also received throughout the pregnancies and at the hospital. I will continue watching and appreciating you videos. Cheers to you four.
Hello Ashton, hello Jonathan,
great to hear that you all are home and doing well!
I wish all four of you just the best for the future, espacially health and happiness! Best regards Ralf
Thank you so, so much. We are VERY happy to be at home and are adjusting well to life as a family of four.
Hi,
I guess the "real fun" starts when the boys are around the age of 7 or 8 years. 😉 Best regards Ralf
I was in the NICU for my first days (I think it was two weeks with the first three days being very critical) as well, also lung related issues, and today I'm going to be 38 this year and doing very well, so your little guy will be just fine 😊 Congratulations ❤
I was surprised at how common it was! The doctors told us that 20 percent of preterm babies born via csection develop wet lung. Thankfully he's fully recovered now. ♥️
@@TypeAshton first of all congratulations and may the happy outcome continue all your lives. About the wet lung - it is quite common for c-sections in general, reason being - the child does not have to pass through the birth canal where it is squeezed and therefore water in the lungs is squeezed out - so this complication is linked to c-section
@@labelmail Frankly, I was surprised he cried so soon after birth, usually that takes longer after a C-section, due to the liquid in the lungs, which has to be massaged out.
Hi there! Anaesthesiologist and ICU physician here, working at a hospital with lots of OB&GYN cases so I know things can get a bit hectic in such situations. Congratulations and all the best to you, glad everyting worked out eventually. Cheers!
I had to stay in hospital for weeks pre birth, had a cesarian and the kids had to stay in nicu for a week... Very thankful for the wonderful staff. Kids are fifteen now and doing great.
We didn't share a lot about the weeks pre-birth but we are so thankful for the care we received. Very much one of those situations where 30, 40 years ago... we would have likely lost Theo, but today he is happy and healthy because of their efforts. So, so grateful.
When my mum was pregnant with me, she had to be admitted 100 days before I was born and still I was 5 weeks early. It’s especially crazy for me to think that not too long ago probably my mum and I would have both died. It’s amazing how medicine has developed
Gosh, watching this video triggered so many memories. Our kids are now 9 and 10. This taking the punches as they come, feeling helpless and just generally the stress of it all... Seeing the toll of the pregnancy on Ashton's face, seeing Jonathan prepare for attending the surgery, going back and forth between home and hospital. For me these are all distant memories, like the endless number of diapers, the mess of it all, the question how to hold the baby and make sure the head is supported.
I'm so happy for you guys that everything went well. Also happy for you (and a bit envious) for this awesome time when the little ones start exploring the world, the first walk and talk.
The good thing about being a parent is that you mostly remember the good things and forget the stress and scare. Wonderful memories in the making.
Congratulations with Baby Theo Jack was just so cute meeting him for the first time 😊
Ashton hope your recovering well .Enjoy your time as a family of 4 💕
I am so incredibly sorry for Ashton and your baby to be going through such difficult circumstances, so I'm really happy to hear they are both doing well so far. Health is always the most important thing in life. I always look forward to yours Videos and I'm glad if you share something with us. I wish you all the best as well as lots of happiness, health and love. I will think of you.
Thank you so, so much. We are happy to report that we are all healthy and recovering well at home. ❤ Feels great to be a family of four.

Enjoy the time of getting to know the new family member. It’s incredibly amazing and equally exhausting. At least it was for me 😉

First of all Congratulations to your new family member! 🥰
This brings back so many memories. I had a planned c-section in March and had really bad complications after birth. It was horrible for everyone involved but fortunately we are good now. Seeing jack meet his little brother made me tear up because I remember my son FINALLY meeting his sister when we came home 🥲
CONGRATULATIONS !!! to all of you and it was good to hear the good news early from you Jonathan saying: all are good. Welcome baby boy. Ashton, what an emotional talk into the camera by you. Great thanks to all the people who helped or offered help to you and your whole family. Good to see you have found and made many honest and trusty friends. CU

That cute little fella is already ready for a haircut. 😊
Glad that everything turned out well, and for the help you got.
It shows, how supportive people can be, if you let them know what you're going through. This is what keeps the community alive.
