Master Half Square Triangles HSTs with this Fat Quarter Pattern! Tropical Grove

- I was inspired by the pineapple quilt block for this month's Stashin' with Stephanie design. The bucket list quilt block is a challenging one, usually made with foundation paper piecing and features pointed strips of fabric radiating out from a square center, many times in a fade of fabric.

At Quilt Addicts Anonymous, we're about making quilting approachable to the average quilter. So I used half square triangles to create a similar effect, with a whole lot less fuss.
And if HSTs intimidate you, or you have trouble getting your points to end up where they are supposed to be, then this tutorial is for you. I cover in-depth how I get my triangle points to show up dang near perfect every time.
We cover how to mark, sew two-at-a-time HSTs, trim to the right size so the seam goes right into the corner and finally how to join the triangles so that you never lose a point again.
So even if you don't want to make this design, I'd watch the tutorial just to up your triangle quilting game.
One thing to know about this month's kits, you are going to have a good amount of fabric left over if you choose to do the lap quilt. That's because we are giving you enough variety to create the fade as shown above and the fabric is used unevenly across the different color values.
If you choose the twin option, you will still get the same number of fat quarters, but we'll send you extra background and binding fabric. You'll have plenty to make the blocks, but the fade is not going to be perfect, so you'll have a scrappier look.
Both will look great, whichever one you choose is dependent on if you like a clean fade or scrappy and if having extra fabric left over at the end of a project bugs you or not.

Your pinning technique is extremely helpful, especially for new quilters. When the results are perfect (or near perfect) I'm motivated to finish and excited to start my next project.
Those fruits look like passion fruit
The fruit looks like a fig. 😍
Love your videos and work. Thank you for sharing. I love how you do things. Just makes total sense to me every step of the way. Woo hoo 😎 Cheers from BC
Canada 🇨🇦 ❤
Looks like a passion fruit to me
It’s. Passion fruit. Delicious, they taste like really sweet raspberries. The skin can be that purply plum colour or orange.
You’re a great teacher! Thanks for an informative video and for sharing your two-pin pinning technique
Thank you, thank you for this video! Needed this example, especially matching points and shifting fabric. All your videos are so informative 😊
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
Such a wonderful quilt. So beautiful! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! 😊
Love this quilt
I absolutely LOVE this pattern and Stashin with Stephany is awesome!! I couldn't ask for more.
Thank you so much!
Your videos are teaching me so much. Thank you
I don’t care for the traditional pineapple block but I really like this!
What a GREAT video Stephanie!!!!
Thank you for all the details… it’s what is needed when mastering these triangles.
You are so welcome!
My guess, it's a passion fruit!😋
You are an inspiration. I always learn so much watching your videos. I plan to watch the HST one again as I so want to have these fantastic, beautiful points.
Thank you so much! You can do it!
It is a passion fruit, lilikoi as we call it. That's our favorite fruit when hiking,
Wow! That's an awesome trail snack!
Thanks for all the info about half square triangles.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
You have convinced me to iron seams open with HSTs!
You won't regret it!
Come sono felice che il video abbia la traduzione in italiano 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Great tutorial thanks 👍👏🥰🌷
Thanks for watching!
This was a very detailed explanation of how to get perfect half squares. I am finding I really like all my seams pressed open even though I was told to press to one side. I have sewn many garments so I think my new rule is press the seam open. Thanks 😊
Glad you found it helpful! Yes, don't let the Quilt Police worry you. My quilts are always just fine! 😊
I look forward to these videos every month. I'm financially not able to join any fabric "'bundles/ boxes" However, I do enjoy seeing the newest fabrics come alive in your beautiful designs. I'm hoping this pattern will become one in your next book. Thanks for all you do to help us make beautiful quilts.
Thank you for watching!
The fruit looks like a papaya, fig or pomegranate to me. Very pretty.
Muy lindo. Gracias 💯💯💯💯
Wish I could still get that fabric now. I steer away from modern fabrics as I have a very traditional home, but these seem more transitional.
Love the teal color way
It's gorgeous, isn't it?
Looks like a Passion flower (passion fruit).
Passion fruit. My friend has it in her garden here in Spain.
Oh wow! That's fun!
Thank you for mentioning that garment seams are pressed open 😳 I never thought of that
This is an amazing quilt. Can't wait to get started on this one. Thank you for another great Stashin pattern and fabric combo.
Thank YOU! So happy you love it!
I always press my seams open - I seem to get much better results that way and I've never seen any evidence that the seams are weak. This is a really beautiful quilt pattern.
Yes! And thank you!
Very pretty quilt. I think the fruit is a fig. The fabric you commented on looking like a mushroom...I'm pretty sure those are nasturtium leaves....the flower it produces is edible.
Thanks for the info!
Passion fruit
I was thinking fig or passion fruit as well.
Nice! I do have a question though and I apologize if you have already covered the topic in previous videos. I am still fairly new to the quilt top peicing. My question is, when do you peice and only use a 1/4" allowance vs using a scant 1/4"?
Quilts are basically a giant geometric puzzle. You've got to be exact with your cutting and piecing or it won't got together right. When you are putting blocks together, you need an exact 1/4" seam. When you are sewing HSTs from squares and are going to trim to size, a scant 1/4" seam gives you a little extra wiggle room help make sure everything turns out right.
I say the fruit is either passion fruit or guava
Do you no longer have the RI store? My friend and I have been planning to visit this summer!
We are online only now.
Hello this is my first time on your tutorial. Did you ever find out what kind of fruit was in your material? If not it looks like a passion fruit. I like all your information and hints I will definitely be coming back for more my name is Rosie
Thank you! Yes, we did - make sure to watch the designer chat with Sarah Gordon when we release it tomorrow!
I think it's a fig. I don't like bugs, except for butterflies.
How much bigger should I cut my squares to account for the trimming that will be needed once the half-square triangles are cut and pieced together? Does the scant 1/4" take care of that? That's what I'm always a little confused about.
We add 1 inch to the finished HST measurement which has room for trimming built in. The scant quarter inch seam gives you a little more wiggle room also! :)
The fruit is a fig!
The friut is called Pineapple Dragon and it is awesome...
One of the biggest issues I experience when purchasing fabric online is the colour is different in person to what is displayed on the monitor. I haven't ordered from your shop as yet, so maybe I'd have a more positive experience ordering from you.
Have you ever tried glue basting?
I see glue basting as making sewing more complicated than it has to be. Just take your time and pin properly and you’ll have great results without gumming up your fabric.
Do u ship to Victoria BC? If I joined ur club?
Yes we do!
Looks like maybe a dragon fruit
Could be a quince?
Dragon fruit/pitahaya
Am I the only person who doesn't like fat quarters? I don't like having to iron out the creases before getting started. I'll take a layer cake or jelly roll over this any day. What am I missing?
Figs maybe
Looks like the inside of a pomegranate
If not a fake maybe a passion fruit
Not fake but fig
looks like a fig to me.
The fruit looks like a fig
Fala muito, e mostra pouco.
