  • In this video, Jonathan along with some new friends and I go on a two night backpacking off-trail exploration of the remote Clifty Canyon in the Sipsey Wilderness of North Alabama.
We started out at the Borden Creek Trail head and, arriving late on the first night we hiked in only 0.7 mi (1.1 km) to a camp site just across the Borden Creek bridge. The next morning, we immediately went off-trail and hiked upstream on a community trail along the west side of Borden and then Braziel Creeks. We followed Braziel creek upstream until we reached the Clifty Canyon. At this point, we turned into canyon and followed the Clifty Creek until we reached a lovely camp site with a huge fire ring.
Leaving most of our gear at this camp site (including, it turns out, my phone which was recording our path), we first explored a side canyon (to the right in this view) which had a small cascade with a lovely rock overhang.
Then, returning to camp, we bushwhacked our way up the main Clifty Canyon battling brush and uneven slopes until we reached the amazing Clifty Creek Falls. After soaking up the beautiful canyon and waterfalls as much as we could, we returned to our camp site for the evening.
The next morning, we hiked back out the way we came in, returning to the Borden Creek Trail Head following the Clifty, then Braziel for a long way and finally Borden Creeks. This was an especially beautiful hike in an especially wild part of the Sipsey Wilderness.
The Sipsey Wilderness (#sipseywilderness) lies within the Bankhead National Forest in northwestern Alabama. Sipsey was the first designated wilderness area in Alabama in 1975 and now encompasses about 24,922 acres (10,086 ha). Rivers and streams have carved canyons and valleys in the limestone and sandstone of the local plateau resulting in a wide range of micro-climates in a short hiking distance, some amazing natural features, a few historic sites, as well as endless nooks and crannies to explore. Wilderness camping, building campfires, hunting, and fishing are permitted. Drones are not allowed. Sipsey is a "Leave no Trace" area (lnt.org/why/7-...) with, despite appearances, no designated fire rings, camp sites or facilities. Unfortunately, there are many traces of the hundreds who hike and camp here every year. Please be considerate and do not add to the already extensive damage in this special place.

I want to thank you for sharing your hikes. I’ve watched many hikers and overlanders videos, most of which jealously guard their route & specific location. You on the other hand gladly share and visually explain your trips. At 76 I have to pick my trips carefully. Your generosity is very appreciated. Thanks, keep your efforts going.

Thank you so much! The entire purpose of my videos is to show people how to get to these amazing places. No one is willing to protect a place they don't know about. Glad you are enjoying the videos. Thanks for watching! 👍

Love the channel, next time you plan on going back to the Bankhead, let a fella know. The wife and I would really enjoy meeting you. We watch all your videos and typically go have the same adventure. We live close to the Bankhead an go out there as much as we can.

So glad to hear that! I'd love to meet up with you sometime. Send me an e-mail (southeasternfrontiers@gmail.com) and I'll try to let you know the next time I do something in the Bankhead. I'll warn you though that sometimes it can be very last minute as I try to work around my work schedule (and weather)...and summer is upon us now and I'm not a native Alabamian so could be slow for a while! But, sometimes there is a break in the heat. 👍

It is an very beautiful set of waterfalls -- and I didn't even show you all of them that we saw! It can be done as a day hike, but is a little long for me (7-8 miles round trip).

When you put the note up at the bottom saying I’ve heard there was a waterfall if you keep going was that same stream at 17:19 in the video where you stop and eat lunch but just upstream? I was hoping to find this waterfall on my next visit to Sipsey. Keep up the great work!

No. This was a branch off of the stream about half way from the camp site to where we had lunch. In my Braziel Creek area map, it would be right under the W in Sipsey Wilderness. drive.google.com/file/d/12QnavwY1hIkXvQEyWTHYQDhc3M81r9th
