Hiking to Linville Falls, North Carolina off the Blue Ridge Parkway
This is a short, 1 or 2 mile round-trip hike to the Linville Falls, which are right off of the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina just south of Blowing Rock.
My wife and I hiked to Linville Falls as part of our recent Blue Ridge Parkway drive (LINK GOES HERE). The Linville Falls are a part of, and just off of, the Blue Ridge Parkway and are part of the National Park Service. The hike to the upper falls is a very easy 0.5 mile (0.8 km) each way with nice steps and a railing for the only steep part. The upper falls themselves are beautiful with nice rocks to sit on and admire them.
After visiting the upper falls, my wife returned to the car while I continued on to a viewpoint over the lower falls. That added about another 0.5 mile (0.8 km) each way to my hike, but it was well worth it.
The Linville Falls were spectacular with many flowers blooming along way. I’d recommend this hike to anyone who is able to do a short walk. The trail is very popular with lots of people coming and going.

A short video giving a little introduction to the periodic cicadas that have invaded the forests of North Alabama this year. They are 13 year cicadas (Brood XIX (19)) and they are LOUD!!!! After a long rainy spell, I finally got out to record some video and audio of the cicadas. They have been rocking our world for the last few weeks. In some places they are so loud, you can't talk over them. T...

Thank you for making these hiking videos! I started watching them last spring and it made me want to start hiking and I hope to do some backpacking soon as well. I live on the northwestern edge of Bankhead and I’ve hunted it all my life but never have really explored it like I’m doing now. Keep up the great work, I’m sure you’re inspiring others to go out and explore our great southern outdoors as much as me!

we're possibly heading down that way this month or next month. is it worth it even with all the construction? when I looked at the map, there was quite a few detours and single lane closures.

Well, I can't really predict what your experience with construction will be. I can only say that for the section of the BRP we did, there was no construction and it was pretty easy for us to get up there from Alabama. But, it is a beautiful drive with lot of fun things to stop and see along the way. Good luck! 👍

So interesting! Thanks for info!!! Good slow motion of the bug coming at you!! But the red eyes... and the sound is surreal! how alarming it is to have them land on you! I had a few attach to my hair. Not sure how much they weigh but it made an impression. OH do a follow up video with the tree evidence? The tips of trees are brown. It is pretty in a weird bug sort of way. Funny stories: people have reported their dogs have enjoyed having the bug buzz in their mouths without chewing.

    • @SoutheasternFrontiers
      @SoutheasternFrontiers Місяць тому

Thank you! The sound is really amazing and comes in two distinct frequencies. The high frequency is more of what people think they are making, but there is also a low frequency that is harder to pinpoint. It sounds to me like a wire trimmer running. 😂 The tips of the trees are brown because so many eggs have been laid in the branches that it has killed them. Loved the story about the dog. I can so see that. 👍

Water Rock Knob had no visitors' center and was unpaved when she kissed me and said, "You're mine". Sixty odd years later I had to lay her to her rest. It had to be on Water Rock Knob where her ashes would rest. Wonderful mountain girl, marvelous wife, fantastic mother then grandmother. Good grief, what I wouldn't give to see her again, say and do all the things I did not say and do while she was here. Her mountains pull hard at my heart.

Greetings Lobo! Great to hear from you. Trying to get in as many hikes as I can before summer arrives and spoils it all with excessive heat! 🥵

Nice little stroll. Welcome to the Tennessee River. I enjoy trails that follow a stream or river. Great scenery. I love spring when everything comes back to life. Nice job showing it all off. 👍

Thanks. I need to find more places where I can just walk along the Tennessee River. I have a few places in mind. Thanks for watching! 👍

NOTE: The gravel road I walked between the I-65 bridges is officially closed to ALL access through October 2024 due to the bridge work I observed. There were no closed signs or anything while I was there, but there is this notice on the Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge web site: www.fws.gov/refuge/wheeler. The road that I was initially walking on that crosses under the bridges remains open to foot and bike traffic.

We've threatened to bring our gravel bikes and do a ride along that area. It is about an hour and a half from our home. We were wondering if there would be enough miles of gravel roads to make it worth the drive, then a buddy went and rode over 50 miles, so I guess that we can find enough gravel roads to justify the drive. Daffodils typically mean that spot was at one time an old homeplace. If you looked around, you might find some old cornerstones of foundation. I-65 is the loudest interstate that I have ever been around. We had a Land Judging Competition just off of I-65 in Cullman a few years ago and even though we were over a mile away, it was so loud that the students had troubles hearing their instructions.

Jacob has ridden in this area many times. I'll ask him to comment on that. Yes! Daffodils do mean there was likely a homestead there. I actually was thinking that when I saw them, but then forgot to say anything. 😜 I-65 is crazy loud and made worse in that area by being elevated. But it's still a lovely trail along the river's edge. Thanks for commenting! 👍 -- Joe

If you are looking to ride this area I'd recommend parking at the "Southern Carnage" bike shop in Mooresville. From there riding from one end to the other and back is about 20 miles. With some of the alternative routes I've gotten about 30 miles without repeating sections but never 50 miles. All sections are rideable by gravel bikes. I usually ride this when it's to wet to ride trail as training. It's a pretty ride by the water that is very flat. Hope that helps! -Jacob
