- In this video, will venture off into the highlands of the Andes, searching for a good time and an ancient delicacy known to few gringos. The thin air of the highland regions can be debilitating. In Quito, I will walk the streets and breathe in the essence of what its' like to be local. Let's veer off of the beaten path and try something weird... Here we GO!!!!

One small correction -- all the wealth the Spanish extracted went first to Cartagena, Colombia, the most heavily fortified port in the western hemisphere, and perhaps the world. There it was assembled, as were massive fleets of ships in Spain to pick up the plunder and return it, hopefully unraided. Cartagena is also where almost all of the slaves Spain imported were brought in, as they were a tremendously valuable cargo, too.

"Palenques" are villages that were founded by escaped slaves during colonial times in Colombia. They were intentionally locagted in the middle of nowhere to avoid capture. Most exist to this day, and their inhabitants are almost exclusively the descendants of the founding escaped slaves (because no one else would want to live there!). These palenques are virtually all dirt poor even now, and the youth want nothing more than to emigrate to a town or city. I'm a bit surprised to see the term used in Ecuador, but not _too_ surprised. There may have been a couple palenques there.

Quito is fine.... Guayaquil has some issues right now... Cuenca is fine.

Haven’t really heard of tourist “dying and getting kidnapped” but that’s likely because there’s not much tourism at all, especially right now (although montaña is pretty concentrated at times). You’ll definitely be more of a target but you should be fine if you’re cautious. If you go into the wrong neighbourhood you could definitely be robbed, even broad daylight. If you’re out late at night going in sketchy areas and getting cabs off the street that’s where you might also get robbed or kidnapped (although usually express kidnapping so just don’t bring your debit/credit cards out with you… they’re essentially useless anyway, not many places have card readers.
Rest assured although these occurrences are uncomfortably frequent they are still unlikely and most of this is absolutely isolated in the coast. In the highlands such as Cuenca, Quito, Ambato, etc. it’s much more safe and the atmosphere is a lot better. If you go anywhere with a port, especially Guayaquil then you’re more at risk. I would avoid Guayaquil, kind of a sht hole anyway, you’re not missing much.
