I've been thinking about how the morale of customers has dropped during this console generation for 2K, and wanted to make a vid about what has lead up to this.
I've been thinking about my experiences with NBA 2K for the last 6 years, and also how the community has responded.
It seems that in general, people have hated a majority of the 2Ks to release on this generation of consoles, with the only positive comments coming out of nostalgia years after a release (except for 2K14 obviously).

I play myGM on hard and I try to realistically rebuild a team. My team hasn’t even past 55 wins yet, and occasionally I’ll play a game and set a franchise record. But it’s my only use for 2k.

@@christianmcclaine6885 that's funny cause alot of times I will play MyGM (highest difficulty) choose the worst team, in the hopes that I can rebuild through the draft, but simulate and end up making the playoffs. I then delete the file and up starting all over again.
In online matches your opponent absolutely should not be able to see who you are controlling on defense. This allows the offensive player to react to the double team immediately by seeing the text underneath the player, it's so unrealistic to be able to react to the defense this way. Same goes for the red double team circles. Players move stiff and sluggish this generation of consoles, fast breaks are ultra slow at random. No zip on passes. Wide open players run into the defense as you are passing to them. Arcade style outside shooting. Crossover stick is not as responsive as it was at the start of the decade. Wonky loose ball physics. Butterfinger ballhandlers. Hot/Cold streaks from quarter to quarter (I sometimes find myself unable to score for entire quarters after having a flowing offense the quarter before, yet nothing about the defense has changed) Unbalanced matchups in Online Team Up. No longer rewards for beating a higher ranked team. Historic teams missing tons of players (it is inexcusable to have a 7 man roster team)
What do I like? They added way more players to the Online Player Control than Team-Up used to have. But you should have access to every player! About 95% of players will never ever be able to unlock the Tier 1 legends! WTF!

2 things I don’t like about NBA 2K19
1. Defenses press up on you as soon as you cross half court, doesn’t matter if it’s the beginning or the end of the game
2. The lighting in the game is absolutely garbage. I don’t know why they stopped using 2K14’s lighting

3. Making contested layups happens to often. 4. The rate of 3s made in this game is why too high. 5. It is almost impossible to play defense. 6. The second worst 2k gamplay wise behind 18. 7. It is generally a very bad game.

@@Majuuub lateral quickness in the game is a meaningless stat due to the fact that the defensive player is always on skates and you have to practically flick the stick to stay with good ball handlers. And in the post, I don't know how many times I've had my man go up through my literal body to score. So it's impossible to play defense consistently

Nah I was starting high school when 2k16 came out and I played the shit out of that game. 2k17 wasnt what it shouldve been but i still logged a lot of hours in that game. 2k18 came out and fucked it all. I preordered and got the legend edition with all my friends so we could get back on our usual grind and it was just ruined. Ever since I only play offline once in a while but it mostly just collects dust.

I went back and played 2k14 on last gen and had the time of my life. The players are fast and you can hit tough shots, perfect releases were easier to achieve and you were rewarded for knowing you shot. It wasn't exactly like NBA basketball but neither are the current 2ks. It's impossible to emulate real life basketball so by not having a perfect engine it still felt more fun because I'm really actually trying to get highlight plays if I'm playing a game. It let me do that. That's what made it great.

Considering how important off ball offense is important to an NBA offense, I'm always shocked at the lack of gameplay options tbh. Guys like Curry and Klay make a living running around screens and that has not even slightly translated to online gameplay. Just insane to me

i’m 15 and i’ve been playing 2k since 2k10. i’ve had every game in between (besides 2k11 and 2k14) and this video really expressed my frustration. my favorite xbox one 2k experience was 2k17. this game wasn’t great, but i had fun with it because i had VC. i had a few xbox gift cards from my family, so i used them all on VC. i had an 88 overall center and a mostly ruby/amethyst myteam that i grinded my ass off for. the next year, 2k18 was my least favorite 2k of all time. i didn’t have money to buy VC so i was stuck with an unplayable myteam, a terrible myplayer, and playnow online. that was the only thing keeping me playing. now this year, i can’t even play that because the gameplay is so bad. i’m missing wide open layups, the computer defense is ridiculous, and it’s just not fun. i wish i had more VC because the game is actually fun with it, but it’s impossible to grind enough for a half decent myteam and/or player. at least i have the mygm story. oh wait.

2k14-2k16 was prime 2k imo. 2k14 and 2k15 specifically are two of my favorite games of all time in any genre. i cant think of any game that i could play as much as those two and still have fun

Credit where it's due, 2k revolutionized the sports genre and I think it spoiled us all for us wanting more out of our sports titles with an actual interactive narrative and a fleshed out association mode. That being said, greed eventually killed this franchise, along with bugs, glitches, a super scripted story, and issues being ignored. The gameplay soon followed and playing this game no longer feels as fun as it used to tbh. It feels like a rage inducing chore, regardless of your skill level.
Naw Madden did that and live did it for basketball 2k jus took it to the next level in both football and basketball but I see your point tho 2k gets hated on every year for everything and it's kinda getting old because if u don't like it don't buy it buy live or STFU lol

This year the 3 ball is just stupidly overpowered. It’s crazy how it seems that shotcreators have a better chance at hitting 3s than they do midranges; when they’re a midrange build. Inside scoring is also broken at times: missing open or lightly contested dunks/ layups. I preferred how it was in 2k18 where you could abuse people in the paint if you were a slasher/finisher.
I got a 6‘11 92 ovr athletic rebounding pf with hof posterizer and hof finisher. Yet I get weak ass animations when going to the rim most of the time and miss easy layins under the rim because a guard is in front of me 💀
Christopher G. Ya it’s bullshit. Last year I had 6’10” shotcreating slasher pf and man I was honestly unguardable sometimes. I would bang on people like I was a combination of shaq and Blake Griffen. If they made it to close to how it was last year, it would make the game more balanced. Plus I also just made a shotcreating slasher sg and I just want to have fun slashing again.

Since like 2k11 people have always sent criticism constructive and negative to the 2k devs each year on what should be changed/improved & it's like 2k just got tired of everyone complaining and gave up. So they gave us a shitty product as if it's their way of saying "you want something to complain about well here you go". They added alot of microtransactions and got they money than stop putting any effort into the game anymore. 2k18 is the perfect example of this. Alot of people complaining about microtransactions but I hate the gameplay the most. I can't make good shots, can't pass to a open player if my life depended on it, can't play proper defense and a whole lot of other shit! It's sad what's became of this game, I don't think 2k20 will be any better... smh I'm going to LIVE next year.

I remember back on the ps3 I would play 2k for HOURS everyday sometimes it’ll be a game I could play for a week straight. Now I start it up play a little and I lose interest pretty quickly the 2k devs know that they can keep doing the same shit every year and people are gonna buy it cuz people love the NBA and it’s the only decent game to get. 19 isn’t as shit as 17 or 18 it’s just completely average does nothing new as a NBA junkie I should be playing 2k every day now I find myself deleting it to make space for other games to play it’s gotten to that point where they gotta try something new or just continue in mediocrity like The Madden franchise

I remember waking up at 6:00 AM every morning on the weekends and playing NBA 2K10 on my Wii for hours up until my remote died... then I would charge my remote and play again later in the afternoon... that was 9 years ago and I haven't bought a 2K game since 2k17, much less consistently played one
and restriction. u don't get to create your player freely anymore. the more detail i give to my player the more effort i will put into it. but now i can't chose my attributes freely i got to rely on roll of a dice, my name, archetypes picking my badges. it made sound small but it not this help creates my style of play and affect my fun right? No because instead of creating a star i creating a role player that is not truly 99 overall. i dare you go create your player with the same stats u got now and tell me if it 99 overall.

I bet you loved everything about 2k18 despite it probably being the worst game of the year you just eat up everything 2k throws out and don't question nothing because your a simpleton and basic so you see nothing wrong with something that's broken.
@Ashton Frailey If I were to argue with you I would look like a fool to others. 2k is broken bruh, I know green on most of my shots but yet 2k will say I release early or late and I'll miss. Passing system is broken, defense is broken even adjusting defensive settings are inconsistent with what I've set. These past couple of 2k's have been the worst ever. 2k11 through 2k15 I used to go on 25 game winning streaks on a consistent basis now on 2k18 and 19 I be lucky if I can win 6 games in row.

2k15 was great except for the fact that it didn't have Pro am. The role players in my career are the reason I don't have fun with it anymore. I want an actual superstar player, not someone who is really good at one thing and only average at best at everything else. The pay to win aspect is also a big problem. Edit: It's boring grinding the same thing year after year.

Micro-transactions is what killed this game, when you make more money in micro-transactions than you did in actual sales of the of the game why would 2k feel the need to improve their game every year because no mater what they put out people will buy it & spend money in the game as well..

I stopped buying the game 2 years ago. Waiting for the game to stop resetting my progress every year. I dropped $400 on 15 and $250 on 16. My friends stop playing and I always loose my progress. When I play League of legends I have skins and stats from 2011. Think about that.
Great video , I know you don't play my career much but my biggest gripe has been that in 2k17 if you wanted to make different characters they would all share the same xp so if I had a playmaker that was 95 overall and I wanted to make a sharpshooter i cod do that and my sharpshooter would be able to be 95 overall after I purchased vc of course, then I would just have to get badges. Also all of your characters would share the same items clothes, emotes, etc. Now it seems pointless to make multiple characters because it just takes too much grinding and bc I've made it to 96 overall on my lockdown defender this year I made a rebirth bud and I can't find the will to put time into any other characters cause I want to get mascots at 98 overall 😪🤷🏾♂️
Reasons why I buy the new 2k every year:
1.Dom's analysis on why certain mechanics of the game are better
2. The Rookies are added in
3. They made it a pain in the ass to match new players with their new teams in free agency
4. New soundtrack

Agents Towel the defense in the game was terrible. I had plenty of fun on the park but then the speed boosting playmakers and the glass cleaners with brick wall had to ruin the game. It was just an endless cycle of playing tryhards who did the same thing the entire game

So I think the majority of us would agree that Tim Duncan is the best PF of all time. But who do you guys have as the 2nd best PF of all time? KG, Dirk, Karl Malone off the top of my head are the ones that seem like the best candidates, what do you guys think?
Probably Dirk at 2. Charles Barkley at 3. People think Malone was better but Barkley was flat out unstoppable for 6 years of his career. I personally dislike Malone, he's a terrible human being and he had the luxury of playing with Stockton, but you could put him as high as 2nd really, still KG was a better defensive player so I'd go with him. Malone 5th, or you could slide in McHale who most players very much respect as an unstoppable post presence. I really hate Malone as a human being so I guess I'm biased.

2k is just my favorite game no matter what has been out that year I just have fun with what’s out
2K is a grindfest and they aren't even trying to hide it. They know players mindset and that people will keep on grinding even if it isn't fun. In the 2K11 days I could play multiple seasons of mycareer just like that, but now it's an uphill struggle to go through even one season before it gets really boring.

The other annoying thing is, you can't adjust or change your player's animations UNLESS you were in the park. You can't do it inside your own house of all things, can't do it during practice and can't do it anywhere where you can actually test it out. You HAVE to leave the area, go to the park, then wait 3 years of loading screen and unnecessary doorman scenes.

I went back to 2k14 and don't regret it.
I started playing MT around Christmas time (mainly just played MC/MP)
Between all of the locker codes & VC glitches, I am able to enjoy MT for the first time EVER.
But I see what you are saying Dom, great video. :)
Your videos are always entertaining and you make very unbiased observations and you always have the best music playing in the back ground keep up the good work
2k is the gift and the curse of sports gaming. They are the one sports franchise that really puts a lot into offline Franchise/GM mode and at the same time constantly try to pat down people's pockets in other modes. By the time you are finished with the game you will have put at least $100 into the game at the least. They are also putting next level stuff in the game as far as gameplay on the floor while at the same time not giving users full control. This is where Live, and this is the only place where Live shines brighter than 2k, because you feel like you have more freedom on the stick on Live. Lastly, whenever 2k promotes a new feature or what's new and improved in the game...they deliver on day 1-5...and then when the MyPark players start moaning like females they patch everything good out the box and nerf it to the MyPark players liking. It's maddening. But they know it's the MyPark players who are going to shell out that dough. In the end, they, just like all other AAA gaming companies, are going to do what's best for the bottom line.
Dom does the only thing I ask of UA-camrs who advertise. Make a smooth transition. Which he does every video 😂
I actually bought NBA 2K19 for my iPad, which yeah they have a mobile game that cost $5. The game has Last gen graphics but the same my career story without cutscenes really. U still play in China and the G-League and during the time you can upgrade your player through upgrade points by how well you played and if you met a certain goal. That actually bumped me up from like 57 to 73 W/O VC. You still upgrade your player through VC when your player is in the NBA though.
NBA 2K started to decline when
1. They introduced VC
2. They added tiers to badges.
3. When they added "speed boosting" and allowed "left right" offense due to the terrible lateral quickness.
4. The introduction of Psychic pass deflections.
Dude I would do anything if we could encourage some other company to make a basketball game for competition. If they promised against a premise of microtransactions, I'd buy their game no questions asked.

I used to play the whole year without pause. I used to wish I could play it more. Now I sometimes dread playing it when my friends ask me to and I'm really good at the game.

I stopped playeing 2k since 2k17 for obvious reasons. Now I play NBA Live 19.
They need to bring back the dreamcast era gameplay with todays graphics, that's what made me fall in love with the series.

2k offline is just way better. Coming back to this video a year later and I still havent played a single MyTeam game. The input lag ruins it for me and that goes for all the online modes.

Friends of mine irl and online ask why I simply reply, “I don’t want to pay to play the same game every year with more game ruining animations, ignored game exploits, and what feels like lack of effort put into the game.” I use to love to play this game but it just feel to repetitive. I rather watch you or another you tuber play for free! 😂
All i play is my league, and im constantly mad about the unrealistic salaries some players expect 3-4 years into a run, where good players retire early because im not trying to pay a 73 overall 15 mil a year. That and the computer builds teams with 5 centers, and somehow is still super good, or the tendency for teams with 2 80+ overall centers on a team makes them unbeatable while a team that plays like a modern team cant win on its own (the Bucks for one).
2K is the best basketball game. But I don't see any point in releasing a new game every year. Just update the rosters and let the players keep their investments for a long time.
The one thing I despise them taking out for no reason was the create a legend or whatever it was called where you got to play as an actual nba player on career mode, I think nba2k13 was the last to have it and I used to finish up kobes career
My biggest issue is the constant updates they make to the gameplay. It’s like they’re admitting their game isn’t good so it’s an update every week
Facts. Dudes be cheesing a lot. Putting Giannis as PG with a lineup of Brogdon, Maker, Lopez and Middleton. Not to mention the reach cheese. Making it kind of hard to run plays because of someone possibly stealing it.

I can tell you don’t play MyGM or MyLeague because you said they both got worse. That’s BS. Both modes have improved immensely. You MyCareer/PlayNowOnline guys are the ones complaining, don’t drag us Franchise mode guys into it. And speak for yourselves.

i don't actually mind there some form of micro transactions. In most modern games there is and you've got to understand they need to make money. But there is a difference between being greedy and adding in an occasional micro transaction to speed up the progress and to make some money. If 2k need proof of that you can buy the newly released 2k21(ps4 edition) for the same price if not cheaper on some dodgy sites, for the price of 200,000 vc, and that will only either upgrade a my player to 85 or to buy a box in my team(basically effecting a 1/4 of your experience). I don't think they'll ever change because no gaming company like 2k or EA are ever going to go back to just revenue from sales of the game.
Thing that bothers me is with 2k now days no matter how much u grind you’ll never reach 95 without buying vc it’s not a fun anymore

Didn't even buy 2k19 and have recently gone back to 2k12. Turns out it wasn't just nostalgia calling because for me the last gen 2ks were and still to this day are legit funner.
2k needs to fix servers first because like Dom said everything i play is lag free but as soon as i get on 2k I’m hopping around like I’m playing hopscotch

That weird "lag" u got where you kept moving but were lagging is lagswitching. Someone lagswitched you.
Not to mention 3k always gives in to the casuals. After patch 2, the game was good. Every patch it got worse and worse. They nerfed post fades, overly nerfed defense, brought blow bys back, etc.

The sad part is its all sports titles that have taken this pay to pay approach. 2K and other titles removing basic modes that were fun for players such as Season mode, playoff, etc. Remember when you could pick up a sports game and just pick up go online or stay offline and start a season or playoff series, etc? Now if you go online and play somebody who purchased the legendary edition at $100 or more and got 100,000 VC they're leaps and bounds ahead of you making it not fun to play them.

I bought 2K19 a while ago and it's just been collecting dust on my shelf honestly. I've probably only played it about 5 times or so, not counting the prelude. I honestly find the older 2Ks a lot more fun than 18 or 19, so I'll spend my time playing 14 through to 17 or I'll play something else instead.
One thing that bothers me is the pay to win aspect. I will admit I have bought VC to beef up my player just so I'm not getting cooked constantly by guys like Raymond Felton, but the prices to upgrade my attributes seemed to spike ridiculously in 18 and 19. Like I could spend about 15,000 or so in older 2Ks and that'd add between 5 and 10 points to my overall, but with 18 and 19, that'd only add 2 or 3 points.
