Not saying it's solely responsible for all the ills of Honduras but by omitting this history is suspect. In many ways Honduras is still an American banana Republic. Just in 2008 the US sanctioned a coup of a democratically elected leader there and afterwards the murder rate soared over 100%

As a Honduran living in Argentina, seeing an Argentinian living so happily in Honduras made my heart warm. Everything that Omare said is true, everyone knows thats the real criminals are the ones holding high seats in power. I almost cried with the first episode in San Pedro Sula, where I was born. The series is very well made. I was wonderful seeing many places I myself have visited, traveled through and enjoyed and love, also people (Juan, the bassist and the teacher from Tegucigalpa taught at the school I attended). Honduras, Mexico and the Phillipines, we share some history together, if I’m not mistaken Phillipines was part of the Virreinato de Mexico, and at some point in history Honduras was part of the Agustin de Iturbide First Mexican Empire, Maybe that’s the answer 😅

I shed a tear when he talked about how the political class is corrupt and ruthless yet the majority of citizens are starving. I am Kenyan and we have these types of politicians all over Africa. This hits home and I know how helpless, vulnerable, frustrated, and desperate the people are. I am so sorry and God bless Honduras.

Yah but there is more to it. To get to the US illegally costs thousands of dollars. From central America it can be as high as 15,000. It is a criminal enterprise, run by people smugglers and gangsters. Theres also a political aspect supported by US political parties. Endless cheap labour is good way for US businesses to keep wages low, bust unions and fill low paid jobs. It also keeps property prices high for rich because of increased demand.
@@tubester4567 most of those people apprehended are kids. They are not coming here to work illegally. Their mass movement reminds me of a film I saw years ago of the Serengeti where there is a mass movement of animals each year where they risk being eaten by alligators and crocodiles waiting in the water. They know some of them will die but they are left no choice but to make that movement. If I had $15,000 in Honduras I would invest in a business not risk paying someone to get me across the border. Might as well invest in a Magellan GPS then cross the border on their own.

@@loccha6093 happens here too in the states with the Mafia. You have to pay protection money. And you need to pay a private sanitation to remove your garbage. Many of these are Mafia connected. And they also get protection from the police. Only the FBI is reall set up to go after the Mafia. I remember John Gotti head of the Gambino family. He used to throw fireworks on 4th of July for his neighborhood in Howard Beach. If you or I tried that we would be arrested to engaging in pyrotechnics without a permit. Also the cops never shot him down like a wild animal or sit on his neck. When he was finally convicted people overturned cars outside the United States Courthouse in downtown Brooklyn and nothing happened to them. The way I look at it is if you have to pay a fee to do business then pay the fee. Most Americans don't have $15,000 in the bank. So when people here hear such talk they are least to feel sorry for these people coming here.

Wow. You can hear and feel the pain in that guys voice. Painful situation in the country and for the people. I feel his emotion. It was hell living/groeing up in Lithuania throughout 90's. It was aweful. Somethung in this guy's speaking really sounds so familiar. And still, Lithuania in the 90's wasn't even a half as bad as Hunduran situation right now. I can relate to his emotion to the point and then it's hard to imagine how painful it is to him to onserve his own beautiful country and people suffering like that. I wish these people healing and well-being. ❤
And on one level, you can empathize with the gangs that give in out of despair who must wield their own justice. To survive. Proper education and purpose can transform the country's negative energy. I think Nick accurately captured the situation on camera. In order to be compassionate we have to be more trusting and transparent.

When police and armed forces are identified by people as probable criminals all sense of normalcy fails, and if you add mistrust of politicians and government officers at all levels civilized life is suffocated. You start living in a very closed and restricted circle to survive. This message is coming from run-down central Venezuela. Be safe!

It was first made into a drink before the Spanish arrival to the Americas. Also, known as the drink of the Gods it’s name ‘xocolātl’ comes from the ‘Náhuatl’ language spoken by the Aztecs and the Mayans. Nick, I can assure you you tried the real chocolate! Cheers
No, the chocolate is originally from switzerland, it was the europeans who added sugar and milk, the aztecs drank cocoa liquor, not chocolate it was a bitter drinks.

I've been to Honduras. I had the privilege of traveling to Copan Ruinas and helping build homes for many of the misplaced indigenous population. Only in San Pedro Sula did I feel a bit uneasy. The rest of the country was incredibly friendly. When we weren't building homes,, we went out at night to the local bars and restaurants in Copan. It was amazing. Honduras has a great future, if they can overturn the corrupt government officials who are nothing but self serving ticks
I was fortunate enough to be able to visit Honduras about 25 years ago. It is a beautiful country and the people I met were very warm and genuine. Makes me sad to see behind the scenes. Even 25 years ago people were living in cardboard in the middle of downtown tegus. I was struck by the amount of poverty I witnessed even then. I was also struck by just how beautiful the country is. Thank you for sharing your travels with us

As I’ve commented before, I have several Honduran students and I appreciate so much knowing more about where they are from and the circumstances they have left. It’s hard to hear about how women are treated. It was interesting to hear Betty compare and contrast with the US. It definitely sounds like overt and violent patriarchy and misogyny exists there (I’d argue here it in the US it definitely still exists but is more covert and subtle, and there are more protections). I hope the situation in Honduras can improve. The beautiful people there deserve more security and stability. 💓

I used to love eating sunflower seeds in China as it was a popular snack to just crack and eat while chatting to people. Then I saw where they actually lay them out and dry them. Of course, I'm sure there are comparable examples all over the world, but it really puts you off.
If you buy coffee from Honduras buy from the Márcala region , completely natural and organic. I was also shocked when I saw this, not for only the contaminants but the workers are risking their lives as well! Greetings from Honduras.
No, my family from my mother's side owns a coffee plantation and I have seen them do the process and believe me when I tell you it's a super clean process. After letting them dry they clean them up, roast them and finally grind them. The final product is clean and delicious.
@@franciscovasquez9781 They do not risk their lives, this is done on a highway with big lanes(they do this on the side of the road) and as you can see on the video the traffic is far enough from them

I wish that you had featured the Bay Islands in this series. They are incredibly beautiful and rely heavily on tourism. They are safe and feature the most beautiful beaches in the world. As an expat living in Honduras on the Bay Island of Roatan, I have traveled mainland Honduras extensively. The cities for supplies and the countryside for tourism. It is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Balfate, Colon and Celaque National Park in Gracias Lempira. Pico Bonito in La Ceiba. Stunning views, delicious foods, safe and amazing, friendly locals. I love Honduras. Travel here and support!

Yah but there is more to it. To get to the US illegally costs thousands of dollars. From central America it can be as high as 15,000. It is a criminal enterprise, run by people smugglers and gangsters. Theres also a political aspect supported by US political parties. Endless cheap labour is good way for US businesses to keep wages low, bust unions and fill low paid jobs. It also keeps property prices high for rich because of increased demand.
@@tubester4567 most of those people apprehended are kids. They are not coming here to work illegally. Their mass movement reminds me of a film I saw years ago of the Serengeti where there is a mass movement of animals each year where they risk being eaten by alligators and crocodiles waiting in the water. They know some of them will die but they are left no choice but to make that movement. If I had $15,000 in Honduras I would invest in a business not risk paying someone to get me across the border. Might as well invest in a Magellan GPS then cross the border on their own.

@@loccha6093 happens here too in the states with the Mafia. You have to pay protection money. And you need to pay a private sanitation to remove your garbage. Many of these are Mafia connected. And they also get protection from the police. Only the FBI is reall set up to go after the Mafia. I remember John Gotti head of the Gambino family. He used to throw fireworks on 4th of July for his neighborhood in Howard Beach. If you or I tried that we would be arrested to engaging in pyrotechnics without a permit. Also the cops never shot him down like a wild animal or sit on his neck. When he was finally convicted people overturned cars outside the United States Courthouse in downtown Brooklyn and nothing happened to them. The way I look at it is if you have to pay a fee to do business then pay the fee. Most Americans don't have $15,000 in the bank. So when people here hear such talk they are least to feel sorry for these people coming here.

I feel his emotion. It was hell living/groeing up in Lithuania throughout 90's. It was aweful. Somethung in this guy's speaking really sounds so familiar. And still, Lithuania in the 90's wasn't even a half as bad as Hunduran situation right now. I can relate to his emotion to the point and then it's hard to imagine how painful it is to him to onserve his own beautiful country and people suffering like that.

And on one level, you can empathize with the gangs that give in out of despair who must wield their own justice. To survive. Proper education and purpose can transform the country's negative energy. I've been to Honduras. I had the privilege of traveling to Copan Ruinas and helping build homes for many of the misplaced indigenous population.
Only in San Pedro Sula did I feel a bit uneasy. The rest of the country was incredibly friendly. When we weren't building homes,, we went out at night to the local bars and restaurants in Copan. It was amazing.
Honduras has a great future, if they can overturn the corrupt government officials who are nothing but self serving ticks
I was fortunate enough to be able to visit Honduras about 25 years ago. It is a beautiful country and the people I met were very warm and genuine. Makes me sad to see behind the scenes. Even 25 years ago people were living in cardboard in the middle of downtown tegus. I was struck by the amount of poverty I witnessed even then. I was also struck by just how beautiful the country is. Thank you for sharing your travels with us

As I’ve commented before, I have several Honduran students and I appreciate so much knowing more about where they are from and the circumstances they have left. It’s hard to hear about how women are treated. It was interesting to hear Betty compare and contrast with the US. It definitely sounds like overt and violent patriarchy and misogyny exists there (I’d argue here it in the US it definitely still exists but is more covert and subtle, and there are more protections). I hope the situation in Honduras can improve. The beautiful people there deserve more security and stability. 💓

That's eye opening to say the least.
I used to love eating sunflower seeds in China as it was a popular snack to just crack and eat while chatting to people. Then I saw where they actually lay them out and dry them. Of course, I'm sure there are comparable examples all over the world, but it really puts you off.
If you buy coffee from Honduras buy from the Márcala region , completely natural and organic.
I was also shocked when I saw this, not for only the contaminants but the workers are risking their lives as well!

No, my family from my mother's side owns a coffee plantation and I have seen them do the process and believe me when I tell you it's a super clean process. After letting them dry they clean them up, roast them and finally grind them. The final product is clean and delicious.

I wish that you had featured the Bay Islands in this series. They are incredibly beautiful and rely heavily on tourism. They are safe and feature the most beautiful beaches in the world. As an expat living in Honduras on the Bay Island of Roatan, I have traveled mainland Honduras extensively. The cities for supplies and the countryside for tourism. It is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Balfate, Colon and Celaque National Park in Gracias Lempira. Pico Bonito in La Ceiba. Stunning views, delicious foods, safe and amazing, friendly locals. I love Honduras. Travel here and support!
