Daemon never marries Rhaenyra. Let's use book's canon, and Laenor still dies. Daemon and Laena move to Dragonstone to comfort Rhaenyra. What happens when Vyseris dies? Aemond and Rhaena have a personal bond, but they are both locked into a different political path. Rhaenyra needs a husband because her children are bastards and nobody wants her as queen but Daemon and Laena are with her and support her (now the black have Vhagar and Silverwing on top of the canon and the green have Vermithor instead of Vhagar). It's such an interesting situation: Daemon may want the crown for himself, but Laena would never want to kill Rhaenyra, and Daemon has no male heir. Baela and Jace are into each other, but Rhaena is attracted to Aemond even if she's betrothed to Luke. And the Greens are too weak for open war, especially with Aemond loyalty in question (in this time line, Aemond never loses his eye).

If he had stayed in Essos, he would have been happy and content. But Laena was a big part of that happiness, and her death re-opened that emptiness inside of him that he never quite knew how to fill.
The fact that his own brother King Viserys did'nt even give him any seat or place during this period is awful. During Jahaerys council for Heir, Daemon was the one who rallied for his brother and got an army of sellswords and other lords if the decision went the other way. This perfectly explains why the character Daemon is the way he is. He never found love and admiration from the people he cared for. Except for Laena and Rhanyra.

Vicerys sent away and he stayed away. He didn't try to kill his brother or overthrow him. The blacks gotta pull together.

“Valyria is we don’t belong anywhere.” My god that line hits hard with how sad and true it is. Valyrians rule Westeros but everyone they rule isn’t Valyrian except for the Velaryon family. Being the last people of your country would be the worst thing ever.
Laena was in love with his ambition, he genuinely loved her. He fell in love with her sense if adventure that complimented his own. He found a reason to finally be at peace with everything. She was able to settle a man that noone believed could settle which is a compliment to her. If only that was enough for her to be his world but sadly, her early death took that time of solace away from him. We'll never see whether Laena was able to find contentment with that.
Daemon exists just to do the opposite of whatever his current wife wants apparently. Laena wanted to go home and get back into the Westeros politics and stable family life and he was willing to do anything if it meant he didn’t have to ho back and face Rhaenyra and Viserys? Like they just never explain this guy well. If the only thing that matters to him is his brother and rhaenyra and the Targaryen legacy then why did he spend 10 years palace surfing for dragon ‘services’ to other royals. Like he always seems to go so aggressively one direction and when he gets enough backlash he just does the exact opposite thing instead for years. Like now you can behave and live respectfully in others homes but you couldn’t go a day without fucking something up in Westeros? Like GRRM really just writes characters that can’t exist in regular daily life without screwing it up but like a few times in their life they are able to not only be useful to the plot and then they go back to plot purgatory until they’re called back up. It is the most bizarre thing because if Daemon is everything that he has shown himself to be just in this show itself.. not a chance in hell this is what he’d wanna do. He spent the first half doing anything he could to make a legacy for himself like with the stepstones after he was removed as heir and then he tried to claim Rhaenyra’s by trying to marry her and then tried to claim Rhea’s after killing her. So he was all free up to find a Valyrian wife which he did and have children but he decided that the best time to stop looking to secure a stable and consistent home and legacy is when you’ve got young children. This weird aimless and complacent behavior is not Daemon unless he was so fucked up after his plans fell apart that he tried to overcorrect and instead pretend that it’s best to live your life as a forever guest? Laena is genuinely a saint for putting up with him for a damn decade with this petulant behavior when he knows he’s being nuts. Laena is one of the few mentally well-adjusted characters since she actually had very loving and supportive parents so she truly must’ve been like so endlessly confused why daemon is unable to understand what she means when she talks about home. He really spent ten years running from his home because he couldn’t reign in his craziness lol. Dude is a true headache. I’m so glad he’s not a real person ha

No, the Velaryons look exactly like the Targaryens in the books. Daemon has a thing for Valyrian looking girls: Mysaria is pale and blonde and looks Valyrian, Rhaenyra and Laena are both white hair, pale, purple eyes, most of his other partners are described as pale and blonde. That's one of the reason why he doesn't like Rhea Royce: she looks nothing like the girls he likes.
