I agree with your comp strategy that you were talking about. The key to these high level comp games is positioning. Nothing else matters more. Everyone is good mechanically and knows all the tricks, and 1vXing really won't work well against multiple good players, so the way to win is always who has better positioning. People who get out of position get punished hard. I think this is what some of the duel-heavy players don't understand, as many of them don't always do that well in comp TO. Being able to win a 1v1 fight is a great skill, but that isn't going to happen much in high level TO games. When you're trying to make a play, being super aggressive and sacrificing some of that positioning is fine, but I think the way you did it is correct, where you pick and chose your spots to do it.
I used to battle the invisible man a lot too. I started watching my clips and i noticed it left me open in a lot situations and got me killed more often than not. I was button mashing more than playing the game. When i started making an effort to only attack when i knew i would land a hit, i started enjoying my time more with this game. I had to remind myself its ok to hold block sometimes too. Might not look cool but it keeps me around longer. Going back to basics and trying to master initiative has helped a lot too. Not criticizing you, you're a respectable foe. I understand the want to improve and hopefully some of these things help you or give you a better idea on how to work on your style.
Your view on competative play matches mine so much. If youre enjoying it maybe ill start joining some small events like this. My biggest downfall in that is im horrible at looking at discord

You were being a team player! And to me that’s more important than being at the top of the score board!
I thought so 😁
