  • Which Brush for What Medium & How To Keep Them Nice!
    Today I will go over the different kids of brushes that are the most useful for watercolors, oils and acrylics and share tips for keeping them in top working order for years to come.
    I recommend brushes by:
    Royal & Langnickle
    Princeton
    Windsor & Newton
    I use Master's Brush Cleaner
    I suggest keeping your brushes bristle up in vases and jars to you do not damage the tips.

    Hi, I know this video is several years old, but I want to thank you for the info!! I am a crafter ect... but have always wanted to take painting lessons. I've painted several things in the past and realized that with some lessons I probably could be good at it. I'm not bragging by no means, just excited that I might be able to do this! My grandmother was a artist. It runs in my family. I'm excited to get some knowledge instead of just doing something I think looks right. Again, thanks so much😁

    You are so right, I go through acrylic brushes so fast! I used to buy really expensive brushes, but when you go through them that fast, it doesn't make economical sense.

    Awesome Lindsay! It's like you read my mind. I've been thinking of dabbing into acrylic paints again. Had been having fun watercoloring for a while now because of these awesome tutorials. So this video was really helpful. And I've been really eyeing that painting half the time in the video. Glad that you have a tutorial on that. Will totally try to follow that. Happy crafting :)

    I have some brushes that don't keep their shape well after washing. The Master's Brush Cleaner is great for keeping the bristles stiff until next time I need them. I use it on my liner brushes for the same reason. After washing and rinsing until clear I re-soap them, shape them with my fingers, and let them dry with the soap on the bristles with the brush end lower than the handle so water doesn't flow up the handle. Then I rinse them before using. I used to have a little jar of stuff that was meant for re-sizing the brushes. It was kind of like liquid egg white. The Master's soap is much better and it is supposed to help loosen any left in paint that might have been missed when washing. I've gotten in the habit of doing this so much that I rinse all my brushes before using so I don't get soap in the paint or painting water.

    Love your outfit! Good information. I like to do paintings with acrylic paint and starting to dabble in water colour. I had no idea I should have seperate brushes for water colouring. I've been using my acrylic brushes for both....but I can see where another trip to the craft store is warranted.

    Lindsay,
    Thanks so much for this. I love learning about brushes and feeling them; they're the vehicles that get your ideas out. I also love your tips for keeping brushes in your life for decades; I believe that when you hold onto a tool for that long it becomes a memory keeper almost too, like you remember your favorite paintings with a certain brush. I also wanted to mention I did get one free real sable from Jerry's in a promotion and it'll be interesting to see just from a utilitarian standpoint if I find a huge difference in painting; I don't have the ethical concerns as much, but I can tell others whether they really do make a huge difference as there are some artists out there that swear by real sable and squirrel. Hugs as always.

      Have watched this probably ten or fifteen times in the past 13 months it's been around! I know you probably can't tell this being the handle's covered with paint, but is your big Winton brush probably the #18 bright? I looked them up and that's the biggest size it comes in.

    I have painted with oils and acrylics and i always thought that the oil was way more abrasive as they use thinner instead of water

    After you clean your brushes does it matter it you let them dry laying down or standing up in a can or jar? Will standing them up when they aren't dry loosen them from the handle?
    I had an art teacher in high school make us buy a 2 inch brush that was $20. My Dad had a fit when I had to ask him for the money. Mr. Hutner said it would last me my whole life. That brush is one of my most prized possessions and is still going strong almost 50 years later!

    • @thefrugalcrafter

      Either way is fine just don't let them soak in the water for too long or stand them on the bristles to dry keeping bristle point out and you'll be fine.

    Hi Lindsay, are you familiar with the Royal and Langnickle Majestic Short Handle set? The 5 brushes includes: wash 1 inch; rounds 5, 8; angular 1/2; and script liner 1 for $18.23 on Amazon. can you use acrylic brushes for oil?

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  6 років тому +1

      +Rheannon Watts you can but don't use them again for acrylics afterward. I like to keep a set for each medium but it is OK to use tour acrylic brushed for watercolor, it won't harm them but acrylics can destroy a fine watercolor brush. Oils will leave a bit if residue that can remain on the brush and not compatible with acrylics so once you use them with oils I would keep them for that.

    hi Lindsay, i am a total newbie to water color and actually don't even have paint yet, i only have gelatos. i am interested in watercolor pencils as i will not be doing actual paintings, but to use in crafting and cardmaking. i picked up a set of royal & langnickel zen brushes on clearance at michaels, but i don't understand exactly how they are used. The set has 3 different stiff scrubbers and 2 different soft scrubbers. I am totally lost. Any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED! THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO!

    • @thefrugalcrafter

      +thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich Thanks for the reply, but I really don't understand the why/how of removing paint. Why on earth would there be brushes (especially that many in a set) solely to remove paint. Please please forgive my ignorance as i am just trying to learn (by watching AS MANY OF UR VIDEOS AS I CAN ;) ) and i have a follow up question about something else...can someone please explain exactly what pan pastels r and how they r supposed to b used? Are they in any way similar to gelatos?? I am still trying to figure out exactly how to use the gelatos.

    You look awesome in that color Lindsay. When I'm washing my oil brushes I am trying to get most of the paint out and I push my brush to the bottom but then my brushes are getting a flattened shape (in the middle) How can I get then really clean without damaging the bristles? Yes I use dish soap. Any suggestions

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  9 років тому +1

      Zoila Rivera swish them in thinner first to get most of the paint out, wpe them off and then use soap and water. I recommend a brush cleaner, it will go much further than dish soap, try the Masters brand.

    What sizes and shapes do you recommend for a beginner so they don't go splurging on a massive amount of brushes? I've done some ink painting before but wanting to really get into watercolour. I'm thinking no bigger than a large card size artworks. And as always tfs!

    • @path6741
      @path6741 9 років тому +2

      Sammy Jo I think Lindsay might be traveling so I'll give you my 2 cents. I'm assuming you mean water color brushes. Every beginner's tutorial will tell you something slightly different, but many of them say to start with a round number 6 or 8. You might have noticed Lindsay said a size 10 round was what she used. I tend to like a 6 or 8 the best. The theory of using a larger brush, like the 10, is that it carries more paint and water and keeps the painter from making lots of tiny strokes with a smaller brush. So if you are painting something a little bigger with open spaces the 10 would work best. I tend to mostly paint stamped images so the smaller brush works well for me.
      The second type is a flat or angled 1/2" wide. If it is angled you can get into smaller spaces with the tip but if you want a wide stroke you can do 1/2" at a time. You can get up to 3/4" or 1" for wetting your paper.
      All the other types of brushes are ones you can get after you have a little experience. I would avoid the "travel brushes" that come with the small w/c sets. They have really short handles and the extenders that come with them make the handle a little wobbly and hard to hold onto.
      Lindsay will probably respond when she has time.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  9 років тому +2

      Sammy Jo a #8 round and a 1" flat will suit you well, I like the Royal Aqualon or Majestic and the Princeton Neptune. Thanks to Pat Hathaway for the good response as well!

    • @beacreates4370
      @beacreates4370 9 років тому

      Sammy Jo I recommended this: www.amazon.com/Loew-Cornell-Brush-Set-Value-Pack/dp/B000U68YJI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1438107748&sr=8-1&keywords=paint+brush+set
      I know they are not the most expensive brushes but I find they work great if you take care of them. If you want to spend a little more you can go to an art supply store and get a type of round tip brush (I recommend a #6 brush by Robert Simmons) and I also recommend a small thin tipped brush.
      But that's just me being cheep since yeah know... artists don't usually have that much money to spend on art supplies so for me it is better to get the cheaper brushes and spend more money on the paper, or the paint because to me that can really make or break your passion for art. Though it is nice to have a nice brush.

  • @1stLucySchmidt

    Thanks, Lindsay, since I'm one of those who've asked the question about brushes being interchangeable for different mediums. I've bookmarked, Pinned, commented, am already subscribed to both your YT channel and blog. Sorry, I don't Facebook or Tweet or Instagram or I'd be singing your praises there, too.
    This may be a question you've never heard before, though it is in the realm of acrylic paints. Is it possible to use indoor acrylic paint in place of the small bottles? I hate to throw out the remnants of our new rooms' paint jobs. Crazy thought, or has someone actually done it or considered it? I'm just getting interested in watercoloring (because of you), but I have these crazy ideas pop into my head on a regular basis.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  9 років тому +1

      Lucy Schmidt I use it in base coating wood surfaces, the tinting strength is not as strong and it is thinner but yes you can. Make sure to wash your brush well, the paint is not as pure nd can contain vinyl and that likes to seep into the ferrulle and dry so make sure you clean them well:)
