  • Come along with us as we join Ian from Big Tire Garage as he demonstrates how to properly use a winch at #EasterJeepSafari 2019 in Moab, UT.
He is using a Rugged Ridge 12,500lbs wireless winch.

No sense, why are you driving up the hill and not allowing the switch to do all the work?

Thanks for the video, basics are important, my new trekker 10000 is on its way( my HD stubby front bumper too!) Like 99% of winch buyers I’ll probably never need it. But I do go off road and it’s a good thing to have. I plan on practicing with it a couple times too. I like rugged ridge stuff!

Couple questions. Is there a way to check the battery life of the remote? And what happens if the remote dies? Can you make it wired?

Yes by holding both buttons it will show you that it is connecting. You can replace the batteries

Can you leave the vehicle that you are winching up the hill in neutral instead of in gear

I'm a fan of Rugged Ridge and Omix-ADA. Many of their products are very good and I own some. This poorly crafted video really has nothing to do with their products. WARNING TO VIEWERS: Do not winch using some of the "tips" in this video. MESSAGE TO RUGGED RIDGE: This is a discoverable video by a plaintiff's attorney. Should someone get hurt (or a vehicle damaged) following the incorrect and UNSAFE "tips" in the training video, you could easily lose a law suit. Nothing against Ian (except he obviously doesn't know some of the finer points of safe/effective winching), but you as a company will be the "deep pocket" in such a law suit. Certainly, you Rugged Ridge, would be liable for repairing an "anchor vehicle's" transmission should it's Parking Pawl break if the vehicle slides in PARK. What about chocking the tires? I could go on and on. Recommendation: Take the video down immediately. If you desire to learn what's wrong with this video, I suggest you find a good 4WD Trainer (there are many) or secure and read Factor 55's "Basic Guide to Winching - Principles, Safety Considerations & Common Rigging Set-Ups." Or, purchase my book, "The Total Approach to Getting Unstuck Off Road - Self-Recovery & Vehicle-Assisted Recovery" from Amazon. In my book I have five chapters on safe winching, and more importantly how winching fits into a recovery equation given all the other methods one can use to get unstuck or over difficult terrain. Winching isn't always the best method of getting unstuck or over difficult terrain.
