Hey Noel, it is so great to see your channel AND your knowledge grow. I remember in your first videos you often pointed out that you were "a thruster guy", and today you know more about the subtleties of twin fins in all varieties than you yourself would have probably thought back then. Thanks for sharing that with us, and happy holidays to you, Aarron and the fam. Yeew!

The key to twin fin designs is the position of the fins. This design is a good example of this. Can run as a twin or twin + one. Paired of course with appropriate templates. Great review from two physically different & talented surfers.

Hey Noel great review. If you ever get a chance try one of the twin +1 setup with a nubster/guitar pcik fin in back instead of a trailor. The effect is pretty cool. Feels slightly closer to the twin fin but with more speed......but none of the weird backside tracking that I feel with a twinny. Pretty cool and they cost like 10$ so minimal investment for more fun

If there were ever a comparison. I would like to know how the RNF 96 compares to the Lost RNF Redux. The Redux has the wing and goes super in mid size waves with a Twin + Trailer. The big twin fins on the pivot point (wings) gives it a very distinctive lively feeling and turns on places on the face that other boards dont. I havent surfed the 96 and would like to get a performance RNF again. I am only thinking about RNF 96 because it is a newer design. Have any of you surfed both?

The Seaside and the 96 surf completely different in my book. The 96 offers more of a performance board feel in the pocket as it likes to surf top to bottom. The Seaside is a bit faster and likes to carve more with excellent projection through turns and feels more like a groveler even through it can shred 4-6' surf. I would be stoked to have both boards in my quiver.....

    Hi Noel,
Thank you for your impeccable reviews! I am 52 years old 5'10" and weigh 185 lbs. I stopped surfing for about 25 years and got back into surfing about five months ago. I live in Hawaii and mostly surf @ Ala Moana Bowls, Rockpiles. I also go to the North Shore and will surf at Ehukai up to 5' max Hawaiian Style.
I purchased the Firewire Cymatic and Firewire Mashup based on your reviews, along with your Twin+Trailer set for my Mashup. I currently have a 5'9" 36.6 liter JS Red Barron HYFI 2.0, 6'0 40.2 liter Firewire Cymatic, and a 6'2' 41.6 liter Mashup.
I purchased the the Firewire Boards with more liters because of my paddling power at the time. Paddling power is no longer an issue, so I want to sell both boards and keep the Red Barron as my groveller board. My plan is to buy a 6'2" Ghost for the North Shore, but I also want another board for the South Shore that sits above the Red Barron. I am trying to decide between the 5'9" 33.50 Liter Lost RNF 96 or the 6'1" 33.10 Liter Pyzalen 2 for the South Shore. The biggest waves I will surf is 6' Hawaiian Style on the South Shore.

Good to hear your back in the water.
Here are some liter ranges for your weight at different skill levels.
      Pro/Expert 29-31L
      Advanced 31-33L
      Intermediate 34-36L
I suggest the 96 for the South Shore. It’s super fun and it will hold in bigger surf.
The Ghost sounds good for the N Shore too. That would be my first choice for those waves

Noel, i have a sizing question for this board as im oddly shaped. Im 5'5 but 190 as a weightlifter and need a good recommendation for the rnf96. I usually ride a 6'0 psycho killer at 33.50L. I was an advanced surfer for the better part of 20 yrs but after 2 shoulder replacements, id def say im more intermediate now. Ive been struggling some with the psycho killer getting into waves. I have to be pretty far back when paddling as it seems like there isnt enough foam up front to support me and thr nose sinks while paddling. I had a rnf back in 2002 that was 5'8 and i loved it. Really want to get back into one so any help would be appreciated

@@jamieryan8328 I purchased the Epoxy 5'8' RNF 96 at 32 liters and a PU 6'1" Pyzalien 2 at 33.10 liters. What I noticed is that the RNF is easier to paddle then the Pyzalien. Somehow I've come to the point where you're the only person i trust for a board review! Pro level surfer that can genuinely feel all the differences, but unbiased so can make honest comparisons. So keep em coming!
One question if you're around: How would you compare the RNF 96 to the RNF retro in terms of getting into waves and being able to surf them at the upper end of their wave range?

    • @surfnshowreviews7777
      @surfnshowreviews7777  2 роки тому +3

The 96 is legit and you can push it in bigger, steeper waves as a Thruster or even with a solid Twin + Trailer fin set. Most other boards that have a similar hybrid outline don’t work nearly as good. The 96 is unique for sure and it shreds in the pocket and down the line.

Just an avg to good surfer and this really has helped me be more performance oriented in medium size waves. Got one from your reviews, coming from a Sampler PU that is already a fantastic board. As Nate said: "This thing is money". What struck me the most was the responsiveness in backside, the fact that it's a little shorter and lighter in light speed construction makes it incredibly responsive underfoot. Friends that tried it said it was the most amazing board they'd ever tried... Thank you so much for the immense amount of hours you put into testing the boards. We put money into the right equipment and you make surfing so much more fun for everyone. ❤

The 96 paddles good compared to your Phantom and Hydroshort. The 96 will shred smaller waves do it's shorter package. You can put it where you want in the wave faster because it's shorter compared to a board with more rail line. If you want the 96 purely for small wave ripping then I highly recommend getting it in Lightspeed for a little extra float and pop through turns.

Hey Noel, another great review. I also just watched "How to make your board work"- "How to surf small waves faster" and "How to do Frontside Roundhouse figure 8 cutbacks". I'm going to spend the summer working on the figure 8 roundhouse cutback and take mine to as close to your level as possible. I'm also in the market for a new board. I'm in San Diego, mostly waist to head high beach break, similar shape and size to the surf you were riding in the Frontside Roundhouse video. I'm 5'10" 165pds and usually ride 28ish liters. I was checking out your reviews of the RNF 96, the Mini Ghost Squash, the Dominator 2 and the Rocket Wide squash. I'm aware you are also currently working on the Mashup review. I'm not married to any of those ideas though. Hey Noel, I am a long time viewer and patron to your channel. I am looking to replace my Lost Mayhem Puddle Jumper HP and CI Rocket Wide and am leaning towards the RNF vs the Seaside by Firewire to replace both. Do you think the RNF will cover both of these boards better. I am a bit of an older bigger guy these days surfing boards in the 37-39 litre range. I have a JS Industries Raging Bull (still in good condition) for the bigger/better days and hollower punchy waves on the south coast of NSW Australia which has a wide variety of wave types (points, reefs, beach) and sizes throughout the year.

The Hydra is a true groveler with very low rocker so it's faster down the line compared to the 96 and the Seaside. The Hydra really performs well in 1-2' mushy waves but it struggles in hollow surf due to less rocker. The 96 is a 1 board quiver doing all things well in my book but if I want a board to shred 1-2' mushy waves then I would get the Hydra in C4 purely for the extra glide and down the line speed.

RNF 96 will out perform both boards in pocket. It surfs top to bottom better with more pivot, traction, and hold through turns. The Hydra grovels best out of three in 1-2’ mushy waves due to less rocker and wider tail. The Seaside draws more fish type lines and likes to carve better out of the 3 boards.

    Hey Noel. There’s a great deal for a used rnf 96 for sale that I really want. It’s 5’5” x 19.75 x 2.5. 30 L poly.
I’m a 26 year old intermediate/advanced surfer in SD. I can perform good turns, carves, snaps etc, but not advanced enough to do air revos and stuff like that. I usually ride 27 L shortboards I guess, but I ride a mostly handshaped twinnies and I don’t know the liters of most of my boards.
I am 5’10” and I weigh 150 lbs. I’m worried that this board is going to feel too stiff under my feet and wanted to know your opinion about riding this rnf at 30 L. Thanks! Love your videos

Some liter ranges at your weight to consider.
      Pro/Expert 24-26L
      Advanced 26-28L
      Intermediate 29-31L
If the board is a really good deal then you can try it for cheap and if it’s too big you can sell it for what you bought it for. I really see no risk here….

    • @surfnshowreviews7777
      @surfnshowreviews7777  2 роки тому +2

Most Twin Fin sets are not that user friendly… I’m talking pure twin fins with no Trailer. They are really loose, hypersensitive and slide out. Especially backside unless the fin boxes are back further or the board is a Vee bottom. I highly recommend a twin fin set that has more surface area so you have some hold, drive and pivot. Check out my HP Twins here…
      www.shopsurfnshow.com/collections/all/products/twin-fins-hp-twins
If you are talking twin + trailer you have a lot of options. In Futures I like the Akila Aipa Twins but you need to buy the Stabilizer separate, in FCSII I like the MR’s. My signature Pivot Twins + Trailer are epic too… we start shipping them next week. Check them out here
      www.shopsurfnshow.com/collections/all/products/twin-fins-p-twin-1
I also recommend Fiberglass construction as twin fins are bigger and they tend to flex to much in honeycomb.

I think you gave the answer at the end of this review as the RNF 96. There's one at my local shop here in New Smyrna, I'll pick it up tomorrow. Merry Christmas!!!!
BTW, I've been riding a Cymatic as a 2 plus 1 with the Mick Fanning twin fin set and it takes the board one more step into fun and hold on bigger waves.

I was thinking about the Pod Mod when I was reviewing the RNF 96. I think these two sleds are a great comparison however the fin boxes are probably set different, the 96 seems to have more entry rocker, and the concaves could be different too. The accelerated Vee on the 96 really keeps the rail engaged as it rolls over from turn to turn.
