After 3 years and 8 months in charge, Roy Hodgson, the Premier League’s oldest manager at 73 left Crystal Palace, the club he’d supported since he was a boy, in May 2021.
His successor was going to have their work cut out. The former England manager had taken over in September 2017 with Palace rooted to the bottom of the table having lost their first 4 League games of the season without scoring a single goal.
He steered the club to 11th in his first campaign and secured solid mid table finishes in his next 3 with Palace never once entering the relegation zone following his first 6 months in charge. Despite leaving on the back of a tide of goodwill, he left a club with an average age of 28.8, a figure topped only by Lazio in Europe’s Top 5 Leagues and 22 players out of contract.
Step forward Premier League legend Patrick Vieira, who returned to these shores with a fair amount of scepticism attached to him, with Football Daily one of many media outlets suggesting things could prove difficult. Across the first 15 matches of the season though Palace have largely been excellent. Welcome back to FD Explained, this is “why we were wrong about Patrick Vieira.”

I was so mad when they just wrote him off without even giving him a chance! Cause Patrick was very smart, have a ton of leadership and for sure his on pitch attitude will be forced into the players!
And he did well at Nice as well

I'm honestly looking forward to see him in management. Always curious on how he would blend the old school values and leadership, with the modern football philosophies. Crystal Palace could've been a punishing place for any manager, let alone a young one. Well done to Palace, and Patrick ⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽
Watch Crystal palace play they’re the exact arsenal paddy v played in just not as much quality
He is slowly building a solid club and has vision. Really good appointment.
He was a legend as a player and he's showing that he's going to be a legend as a manager. He's transformed the Palace team and is adored by the fans!!!!
P.V is pure class!
Cool to see Crystal Palace do this well!
Good club🦅
A day after posting this, Palace beats Everton, absolute class timing!
Yeah, Benites destroyed his carreer and Liverpool legacy at once
I'm thankful to him for using Gallagher and improving him as a player
9th in the league now and in the FA Cup semi-final! WE'VE GOT SUPER PAT VIEIRA !!!!!
I enjoy watching Palace this season. Well done Vieira 👌🏾
Arteta better watch out, that's all I'm going to say.
I've been saying this since he joined. He's your greatest midfielder of all time and has a statue outside your ground not to mention unlike Lamps, Pirlo and Ole he actually seems to be a competent coach. I can see him at arsenal within the next two years.
@@himum3429 Lampard was fairly competent. Even Ole was a slightly below average prem coach and an average coach in other leagues. It’s just that they weren’t ready for a big club. Pirlo was garbage tho
THAT WON'T HAPPEN FOR OBVIOUS REASONS.
If you looks at our form up until MacArthur was injured we had had a fantastic start. 4 games without MacArthur and no wins where we didn’t manage to keep possession. In steps will hughes and we were much improved. I am delighted with our start under Patrick and I think he has a great coaching team around him. This season I can see us finishing top 10 but as ever it’s about managing injuries with smaller squads. Exciting times
He's probably receiving the same treatment Wenger got when arsenal first signed him as the manager. Hope Vieira does well for palace
9th in the table, most points taken from the top 6 by a team outside of them, FA cup semi, banging style of play and a complete squad overhaul bringing in exciting youth. All this after you lot all said he’d be the first manager on the chopping board… yeah you gotta take a big L on that prediction lads!
I’m surprised they didn’t even mention Gallagher. They used his face and stuff, but didn’t even mention him and the extreme output and influence he has on this side. I’d say that despite their tenacity, without Gallagher this season, they shouldn’t be in the same position at all.
I’m not trying to boast, but I was excited to see Vierra & their signings
Not to mention we had the hardest start to the prem based on the teams average placement last season
If they can shore up the defense, retain Gallagher, this team will be fighting for to Europe spots next season.
Basing on what he's playing I can't see him continue at Palace, Chelsea will definitely bring him back, however I think Eze will be a fine replacement
glad to see him doing well.
Viera putting in work
LEGEND.
I thought based on the good recruitment palace made something would have to go horrible for the club to fail, so I think Patrick had to do well, not necessarily fantastic, but good.
Vieira Legend 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Legend. Already better than Arteta in my book.
You're joking right
@@dsboss206 why would you think it’s a joke?
So you're saying you would take Viera over Arteta right now?
@@dsboss206 Of course not. Wouldn’t want him to take over at all. Dont want him to ruin his rep at the club. Also, Palace is a smaller club with less pressure. The point is, his tactics are better than Arteta’s.
@@dsboss206 yes right now Arteta is shit!
We all thought he'd struggle as this is his first job not gotten through nepotism. Have to say, other than the team i sjpport, palace is my favourite team to watch this season
Next arsenal manager.
I’ve seen more from Viera in 3 months than what I’m seeing from Arteta in 2 years smh
I’m really happy this video was made. I thought the way you guys at FD all dismissed him at the start was wrong!
I wasn't wrong if you look at his previous clubs that aussie club Melbourne I think and also when he was at New York he has always done well he's a good leader who the team play for.
I saw the original take and knew it was utter utter utter steaming bollocks. Yet they've still got several things wrong in this one. Vieira was interviewed by the club in April/May but Parish decided he wanted a more experienced manager so moved on. Luckily both turned out to be time wasters. Why do think he was signed so quickly after Favre started cocking about. Freedman had been planning the complete restructuring of the squad for 18 months. He built and initially managed the original promotion winning team that got to the FA cup final in 2016. So he's always been a good judge of when to sign or let a player go. While getting maximum value out of the deal.
Please, Palace Board, do everything in your power to keep this man
I think you guys should do One of this about Ruben Amorim.. really impressive what he is doing with sporting
Love the video Dougie
Fairplay for acknowloging that
this aged well
Tbh it’s disrespectful if you think they gonna flop on a new project if we as football lover don’t believe they are going to succeed who is going to ?
Vieira >>> Arteta
Building the Palace with crystal mind to achieve flying colors ....
This did not age well at all. Now he is the worst manager in the prem and he is next to get the sack.
Football daily you guys have zero knowledge about this thing accept it.
1) viera
2) arteta
Palace 3 Arsenal 0
I think Roy helped with the foundation’s but Patrick is building a fine building
they just need to stop throwing away wins in the last 10 minutes. Happened a lot this season that could have seen them in the top 6 by now. Will be curious after this season however how they cope without Gallagher
I like that Arsenal over looked him for Emri and Arteta, that should be Henry's job but whatever. But why managers like Ledley King and Chris Houghton can't get a job? Portuguese, Spanish, Italian and now French mangers are getting jobs over over native English managers. Not talking abt the Gerrards, Rooneys and Lampards.
so more than the achievement the managers have earned you rather know them from their nationalities.what an amazing thought process.
so is Henry an English manager.and what about those three names.u dismissed them as if they aren't English.
That's it Patrick keep up the good work but then your coming back home to Arsenal. COYG!!!
Too bad he's losing his second-best player, best midfielder and long lost son Gallagher when the season ends . The loss of Gallagher is going to leave such a gaping hole in midfield. Ya'll just wait and see
As a palace fan I can honestly say whilst he's been great for a few games without McArthur alongside him the past 3 games he's been lost, definitely possible to find a replacement
@@michaeldascrubtarling1610 yep. Noticeable that he was back to his best with Hughes next to him who is Maccas long term replacement.
We have more bro, don’t worry. There are a few he can choose from. I’d love to see Anjorin at a prem club if Lokomotiv don’t buy him.
EZE.
great coach Patrick Vieira he should take over Arsenal
after Crystal Palace
I can see them finishing 8th they play some incredible football
"We" who is "We" son? Speak for yourself.
I hear manchester City want Patrick when pep moves on??.... 🤔
Much better manager than Arteta 🤷🏻♂️
Why I was wrong about Patrick Vieira Explained*
Let's see how he does at the end of his two seasons
At least turn the subtitles on.
8:17
Twenty Wan
Above Brighton
PV should ask for Arsenal loaning Auba, balogun, chambers, kolasinac, and AMN
Very good
You should say why am I wrong
You were wrong just because he is Arsenal..... That's why you hated him
Because!
Football daily who would take at man city Job Patrick viera or Mikel arteta make a video if u free
whos we?
Not a single win since the new year in over a dozen games, and a wakanda signing program which failed.
GOD BLESS 🙏🙌✝️!!!
Why was you talking rubbish in the first place
❤💙⚽️💙❤
to admit I was wrong is harder.than being wrong.
this new crop of fans thing they know better than those manager.the only point they have is its modern football not like what used to be.yet except few clubs all most all clubs still have same managers.and how the so called young coach are failing miserably.
4_3_3 is the preferred tactic yet it was cryff who polished it and coach like pep and klopp Jose tuchel comes from the so called old school 。
My captain
Arteta???😹😹😹
Because people who were writing him off don't know anything about the French Ligue 1 and the work he has done at Nice. It's easy to criticise it as a farmer's league, but if you do it without knowledge, that is sheer stupidity
Well i mean premier is kind off a farmers league. Just look at the last champions since alex ferguson left man utd, only city and chelsea arw winning the league without the exception of the miracle leiscester and Liverpool.
Take away Chelsea, City and Liverpool and make a XI with all the best players of the rest of premier league teams and that team hardly will gonna win against Chelsea, City and Liverpool
UTP
Palace should finish 9th
So ex stats were wrong again
I have Dream to see PV next manager Arsenal FC Arteta Out
say that again lol
That video weak, y'all just here spitting stats and saying things improved. It haven't Improved that much. But he's getting results for now an kudos to him. Sigh. Y'all wack.
Football daily was sleeping on Viera now they wanna kiss his feet.
racism thats why you were wrong admit it.
It’s too early. Relax
Sunday vibes question - who is the best full back in the premier league if you feel you’ve said too much on it do outside of Liverpool city and Chelsea ,defending for me comes first for a full back and then attacking output so for me cancelo
I mean he could still get relegated and then we wouldn't be talking like this
of course you were wrong
how is this a question?
Wrong best tuchel the best boss ever palace will win what an egg up
Most annoying voiceover on the internet wtf bro?! 😂😂😂
Patrick Vieira future Arsenal manager
Racisme?
You're wrong most of the time. Common knowledge by now
Lads yer wrong about most things because none of ye have a clue, not that I do either but atleast I don’t act like I do☠️
You guys are probably going to jinx him
Very early to be saying this
Once Gallagher leaves the team will crumble. He is the backbone of that team
Behave...You are clueless... Zaha, Eze, Olise, Mitchell, Guehi etc have all been outstanding! You know NOTHING!
You were because you don't know ball duh
Lean to have an educated opinion, street talk demises your credentials 👎🥱

Palace are tinpot
Thanks football daily for speaking for everyone . Your opinion has to be the same for entire world for sure
