    Thanks for checking out my comparison video, guys! I got these two basses with all of the same specs (woods, hardware, natural finish, etc). This allows the tone-influencing aspects unique to each model, such as pickup placement and body shape, to be heard more precisely. Each of these basses are currently $284 at Thomann's website - link in description.

      Great technique of playing, Nathan! After years of thinking about it, I decided to buy a bass! And after I saw one of your video. You really are an inspiration. And same question here. What bass should I go for? P or J? I was even thinking about getting some more expensive Peavey cirrus 4 or ESP LTD D-4. I have basic music education, so what would you recommend?

    P Bass is definitely a lot creamier, and smooth
    J Bass has that twang in the tone, it's that straight-in-your face sound

    • @bflo1000
      @bflo1000 4 роки тому +1

      I prefer P basses because of that, but I thought both are fairly creamy. These are NOT typical P and J basses w that killer MM bridge pup....They're better!

    • @kebab_boi
      @kebab_boi 4 роки тому +2

      bflo1000 that’s true actually. Both have it. It’s just that P Bass is a little bit more modest, and takes a step back to keep the structure of the tone, where as the Jazz Bass is a lot punchier, has a bit more high end. But yeah both have that nice rounded creamy sounding quality to it.

    • @christianhenry4173

    • @blop-a-blop9419
      @blop-a-blop9419 Рік тому

      yes.
      I don't really like the P-pickup sound, doesn't sound enough like the originals... (maybe the single magnet per string has to do ?)
      And on the P version here the BRIDGE pickup also is brighter ! because it's placed slightly more towards the bridge !
      which makes a combination I really don't like that much :/

    • @blop-a-blop9419
      @blop-a-blop9419 Рік тому

      I think they shoulda went for a standard P (not reversed)
      and positionned the bridge Humbucker the same way as for the J-MM version.
      It's ok to have them be closer, it gives a more focused midrange sound. Which is what you expect with a P, PJ, or PMM.

      The J version has a toggle switch that chooses between series and parallel mode, the P doesn't have. Maybe they ran in opposite modes.

    • @fauntpingu
      @fauntpingu 5 років тому +20

      @@yoelsamosir3659 Bridge pickup on the P looks closer to the bridge than on the J. Distance between the string and the pickup might be different as well, and so the playing/attack.
      Also pickup building (mostly winding) is an inconsistant process. Pickups from a same model often sound different because of this.
      I re-listened without watching the video and I couldn't really notice the bass switch on the bridge comparison part. It sounds more like a difference of attack/playing to me. We listen a lot with our eyes.

    I assume you know who Berry Oakley is? He was the original bass player for one of the greatest bands to ever exist, The Allman Brothers Band. Originally started playing guitar and moved over to bass later on. It had A LOT to do with his style of playing and how it was much different from everybody else at the time. My point being, I could see him having move on to stuff like this had he not passed away 1 year after Duane Allman did, in almost the exact same way: a motorcycle accident.
    I bet you would be killer with his bass, Tractor, that had a Guild Starfire? pickup mounted in a Fender J Bass. One hell of a bass. He actually built a few different "Tractors" with the Guild pickup mounted for the neck pickup and the original neck pickup moved down next to the bridge pickup.

    For all you looking to save some cash, Nathan is using the Enhanced versions of these basses where they have active pickups and the treble pickup is a humbucker. If you want the same bass with standard single coil passive pickups they go for much much less. A passive J or P is somewhere around $120 and are well worth the money. The craftsmanship on these basses is damn near perfect and rivals Squier and even perhaps Mexican Fenders.

      I have a Harley Benton 1954 style P-Bass (PB-50) that was only $104, and honestly speaking, it's every bit as good a P-Bass as any P-Bass that I've ever owned. The quality, build, and sound are outrageously great - especially for these prices. I also bought two other HB's; a Tele and a LesPaul P90 goldtop and my experience with these are the same as with the P-Bass. They feel, play, and sound exactly like the real things. I'm done paying thousands of dollars just for a damned name.
