The true sign of genius is making something difficult seem easy & that's Allison's voice to a tee. She has no peer! And as for Sierra Hull, who I'd never heard of until 2 minutes ago, I don't know whether to admire her adorable beauty or her amazing talent for any age, so I'll just appreciate BOTH! She's got a brilliant future if Allison plays with her. I've loved Allison for years & now I love Sierra! You go girls!!
Damn, sixth grade. That's it. I'm hanging up my mandolin and letting the real talent like Sierra Hull, Sarah Jarosz and Chris Thile do the instrument justice. Wow. And Alison always sounds like an angel.
Alison you are The Teacher..... Let us not forget... How Sierra Hull rose to fame and how the Union Station stuck by it all....Splendid no other word for it x
I like both AKUS and Sierra. I'm glad to know there's a kid who loves to play the Bluegrass. I llke the way that AKUS giving a chance to a new shining star to play on the stage. That's great!!!
That was in 2007 or earlier. After High School Sierra was the first bluegrass musician to receive the President's Scholarship to Berkeley School of Music in Boston. She also played at the White House recently with Alisson and has fabulous new CD out called "Daybreak" . She is the future female voice of Bluegrass I assure you.
'There's a restless spirit knocking at my door today There's a shadow hanging 'round my garden gate' Does anyone else get the chills that this haunting lyric is set to such a sweet melody? All the musicians playing this night are extraordinary here as well.
Heard Alison live at night in Ct a couple summers ago. When she opened her mouth to sing it just blasted off the Hills of western Ct and seemed to float forever. i can still hear it. absolutely heavenly. Sierra's voice isn't as big but just as angelic. I told her she was " a gift from god" and meant it. She lowers my stress level.
Sierra turned 21 in November, so this was around 9 years ago. Anyone reading this in NE Ohio, Sierra and Highway 111 play the Copley (Akron area) bandstand for FREE on Sunday evening June 16. Catch her up close and for free now, because someday she'll get the big bucks (well, big for bluegrass).
My only complaint about this performance is that it doesn't end the way that it begins like it is supposed to and that is with the mandolin playing. God bless you and AKUS and Sierra always!!! Holly in east Tennessee (a fan of Alison since 1994)
This is professional level playing from the young girl. She's not a novelty player. She's fitting in with one of the best bands around. I think she slightly missed a note at 46 seconds, but she just gave Alison a look and carried on. Professional. Very impressive. If you ignore her age and height, she's just another band member. I love it.
All good advice my friend. We still take time for things that are most important, top of the list is spoiling the dogs, cats, horses, and even the wild birds. In fact, our current most pressing remodeling project is to re-skin the barn, while we live in a 100 year old home desperately in need of updates. It's a tough balance and as such, music has had to take the back seat for a little while. We're doing a shock attack on the remodeling so that then we can enjoy the rest of our days .
Alison is from Champaigne IL, Dan Tyminski is from West Rutland VT, Jerry Douglas is from Warren OH, Ron Block is from Torrence CA, Barry Bales is from Kingsport TN
Listen to all of the runs and fillers Sierra throws in this song. It takes a careful ear to hear it all. She follows Steffey's blueprint from the original recording note for note. And then, near the end of each chorus, her chopping adds some original flair not found in the original recording. At age 10, she made one of Union Station's greatest songs even better! Unprecedented. AKUS+Sierra is the best lineup on a bluegrass stage ever, to me.
i love this song so much and her voice just is amazing! gotta love alison krauss! I remember hearing this song when I was little cuz my parents are huge fans of hers and now so am I. :D
I've always enjoyed AKUS, but that young girl amazes me with her talent- I shouldn't be suprised, Allison Krause came out with the first album at quite a young age as well.
Watching this really makes me crave AKUS' new album. Can't wait to hear it when it's re;leased. Watching Sierra now and how popular she is was no surprise back when this was taken.
She's now about 18 and is an amazing guitarist/mandolin player. Check out her version of Roanoke on UA-cam from a few years ago- she has faster fingers than Van Halen, Stevie Ray, whoever...simply amazing!
I checked for that beat and think the count is correct. They do come in late though I think that is intentional since they do it at that section every time. Being a female player myself, I really appreciate what Sierra is going to become. She is good now she is destined for greatness.
what I like is that they introduced her--and then treated her like another band member. They played the tune straight up and didn't make it into a freak show. Sierra hung in there and got the job done. You really can't tell the difference between this version--and the original. Geoff
I hope you checked out "cluck old hen" played after this one. instrumental that showcases Sierra & each musician. watched Sierra play live 4 times this summer. WOW
"Picky" indeed. I've been trying to teach myself dobro for a couple of years and never seem to have enough time to make much progress :-( Oh well, it's still fun to just pick around with. "last frontier, last singer, and both the best. " Well I don't much about Alaska, but Alison Krauss is definately the best at her game! Have a great weekend!
Anyone know how Alison and Union Station met this amazing girl? If only I could even slightly play an instrument! She is amazing! All of these musicians are amazing and so is their music! Long live AKUS (or is it AKAUS? Someone correct me, please!))
I love Sierra's face at 0:47, one itty bitty wrong pick, and she gives a face of disgust. So articulate, where did they find her, she has a bright future... :)
@Alison42595 Ohhh no :) I was not trying to be a critic. I think she is amazing. I was stating mostly, that at her age, to have such an ear, and to hear what she is playing, and recognize it. You can not say that about too many young child musicians. It was more of a compliment than anything.
@gesikah14 Yes! At the end of the introduction, she gives that 'I'm so disgusted with myself' look after making the mistake. The mark of the perfectionist. Hopefully she doesn't take everything so seriously, or she'll suffer needlessly.
"And that dobro player.....he's AMAZING!! " Well, it is Jerry Douglas afterall. "how they can smilke when singing such such songs , ...I wish I played in Union Station....gthat would be a prayer well answered" Maybe that's why they're smiling! "indefatigable" Now that my friend, is a rarely, but very aptly used term.
Props to Alison for using her platform to introduce so many others to Sierra.
The true sign of genius is making something difficult seem easy & that's Allison's voice to a tee. She has no peer!

How many greats are on that stage! How did Allison manage to assemble that group is just as amazing as the music
Damn, sixth grade. That's it. I'm hanging up my mandolin and letting the real talent like Sierra Hull, Sarah Jarosz and Chris Thile do the instrument justice. Wow. And Alison always sounds like an angel.
Sierra absolutely NAILS Adam Steffey's mando parts in this video...intro, fills, backups, everything. Bravo Sierra!!!
Alison you are The Teacher..... Let us not forget... How Sierra Hull rose to fame and how the Union Station stuck by it all....Splendid no other word for it x
Don't you know that there is two proud parents back stage, I can just see in my mind how happy they are with good reason

Sierra has that special talent hope she joins the group
Now, that's some world-class music. Thanks for posting this.

that bass line is like all of the brave hearts of the world marching forth. its that powerful and moving
It doesn't get much more adorable than that- and she owned it!! Awesome job.
'There's a restless spirit knocking at my door today
There's a shadow hanging 'round my garden gate'
Does anyone else get the chills that this haunting lyric is set to such a sweet melody?
All the musicians playing this night are extraordinary here as well.
Restless feeling*

I love her then, love her now and will for ever. Thank you Sierra!
That little girl is AWESOME...shredding on the mandolin
Love you Alison. thanks for introducing Sierra. She's come so far. Best wishes to all of you
i like all kinds of different music, but songs like this by alison and union station just put me in a trance like no other
Too good for words. REAL American music.
There's an awesome lot of talent here! Good track! Greetings to everyone from Jarrahnut in Jarrahdale, Western Australia.

Just saw Sierra tonight. She is awesome!!!
How Could Someone Not Like This Video. It Is Fantastic!!!!
Look at that girl go!
Both of them
Doesnt get any better than this. Love this song to death and Sierra Hull just made it that much more spectacular
My only complaint about this performance is that it doesn't end the way that it begins like it is supposed to and that is with the mandolin playing.
God bless you and AKUS and Sierra always!!!

I caught that too. I saw her tonight for the first time since 2012 and dear god she's AMAZING! She doesn't miss a thing now.

she had an angelic voice....!!!!!!!!!
Allison's voice and Sierra's picking are a wonderful combination on this signature piece from Allison and Union Station
Alison is from Champaigne IL, Dan Tyminski is from West Rutland VT, Jerry Douglas is from Warren OH, Ron Block is from Torrence CA, Barry Bales is from Kingsport TN
Superb singing, playing and ensemble. Just about the best there is.
GOD BLESS THE LITTLE ONES.

unFreakinBelievable!! I am amazed by that youngin's talent!! I LOVE AKUS!!
Awesome, Brilliant. Much better live than on cd. More Please!
Very pleasant sound.
And I"ll never be that old to play that way...Crazy. I think that's what'll I'll call regret
If we could hear how angels speak, I'd bet it would be pretty close to how Alison sings
Simply amazing
Ron Block a musical genius for sure . 🎸☮️🌟🌟🌟🎼🎼🎼
I want Alison Krauss to sing to me if I'm sick...what an amazing voice.

You know wot? It's a month later - and I still love this tune. D~
I've always loved allison, but sierra is cute as a button. just an amazing young talent.
I love her so much! My favorite, hands down.
As Jerry Garcia said, the cat's out of the bag. Little the man can do now but struggle. Long live music!
awesome, wholesome, pure, love it.
Awesome song! One of my Favorites!
Sierra is growing into another superstar...just like Alison...please check out her latest stuff on UA-cam...

Wow !!!!! Talented kid !!!!!!
She's now about 18 and is an amazing guitarist/mandolin player. Check out her version of Roanoke on UA-cam from a few years ago- she has faster fingers than Van Halen, Stevie Ray, whoever...simply amazing!
Awesome song, perfectly performed.
I recently downloaded Alison's Hundred Miles or More Album - brilliant. I'm off now to download Sierra's album
really nice.....
Absolutely amazing
Love this tune, thanke. D~

I miss Alison putting out actual bluegrass. :-(
I hope you checked out "cluck old hen" played after this one. instrumental that showcases Sierra & each musician. watched Sierra play live 4 times this summer. WOW
One of the best AKUS songs to date. Hasn't the band opened up its sound? To me this is a couple of bumps up from the album version.
Brilliant
"Picky" indeed. I've been trying to teach myself dobro for a couple of years and never seem to have enough time to make much progress :-( Oh well, it's still fun to just pick around with.
"last frontier, last singer, and both the best. "
Well I don't much about Alaska, but Alison Krauss is definately the best at her game!
Have a great weekend!
I hope I get just as good as Alison
6th grade.....make me feel THAT much BETTER about MYSELF! She says sarcastically. Lol. Good for her. Play on, youngun
Anyone know how Alison and Union Station met this amazing girl? If only I could even slightly play an instrument! She is amazing! All of these musicians are amazing and so is their music! Long live AKUS (or is it AKAUS? Someone correct me, please!))
How many years away this is? One of my favorite songs of Alison and this is a great rendering of its original recording. Thanks for sharing!
"Anyone know where this band hails from? "
They're from all over, but I think most of them live in the Nashville area.
I love Sierra's face at 0:47, one itty bitty wrong pick, and she gives a face of disgust. So articulate, where did they find her, she has a bright future... :)
@olLonely OMG are you so right....need her music to help me mellow out from stress!!
Wow, might as well have been Adam Steffey on that thing- way to go! BTW, this looks like it was about 10 years back.
Don't miss the video of her playing with Sam Bush. She's just as adept as Sam!
Sierra's from Byrdstown, TN.
Listen to her climb between 1:36 and 1:38, 2:45 and 2:48, 3:10 and 3:12 minutes.
wow
Good Lord she played the kick off the same way Adamn Steffey played it when he was in the band
I could not agree with you more...
holy snickers that kid knows how to play!!!!!!!!
@Alison42595 Ohhh no :) I was not trying to be a critic. I think she is amazing. I was stating mostly, that at her age, to have such an ear, and to hear what she is playing, and recognize it. You can not say that about too many young child musicians. It was more of a compliment than anything.

Well, it is Jerry Douglas afterall.
"how they can smilke when singing such such songs , ...I wish I played in Union Station....gthat would be a prayer well answered"
Maybe that's why they're smiling!
"indefatigable"
Now that my friend, is a rarely, but very aptly used term.
I love all music(except rap aka crap) espically country(and music like bluegrass) and rock
@gesikah14 disagree she hit the blend in perfectly
you guys are tooo critical
Anyone know the exact date of this recording?
@gesikah14 Actually it wasn't a bad thing it was just a chop after coming off the 5 chord back to the root chord and then kept cross picking.
A female marty Stuart 😊❤
