I reckon Santa is a lockpicker; uses his Bogota to open your door in a matter of seconds, then uses his magical supersized t-shirt cannon to launch gifts into your home.
I have a Dyno Kwick Pick that i purchased over 15 years ago never picked a lock with it before. I watched your video and picked my front door dead bolt in under 3 seconds. Wow thanks for the great lesson on rakes.
The quality of this video for 2011 is oddly really good. This beats most of 2020 videos. Maybe it's due to not letting auto focus kill the video but none the less, it was and still is ahead of the game as far as lock pick videos go.
Great channel Schuyler : ) Odd. I tend to use the L-rake less like a rake than that. Probably it's just the way I was shown first... the others I rake with. I'll have a try your way and see how it works out for me. I agree about the bogota, it's a great rake and even if it doesn't open the lock it usually sets several pins and gives me a good start... often there's a high one hiding somewhere that didn't quite get caught and when I walk down the pins with a finger or half-diamond it finds it... or I get a false set on some spool and have to look for the counter-rotation. I love showing people how to do a simple rake using a cheap practice lock... the look of surprise on their faces when they pop their first lock is priceless : ) It's so easy to get hooked when you hear that click and the plug spins free : )))))) Thanks for taking the time to make these videos. I'm showing them at my community hackspace next week when I give a free lesson on lock picking for complete beginners ... I'm giving a free set of picks and a practice lock to everyone that comes. Should be a lot of fun : ) Hopefully some will take up the hobby. If not, they've hopefully had a fun day and done something unusual Again, thanks for doing what you do. Your little mini-guides are so relaxed and accessible : ) +1 sub.
excellent video. i have a old lock at home that was used for my second door and i never got the key that fit with it. so, i was to make a copy of the key because i have all of what's needed and i have knowledge in mechanical things like clock and so i'm sure i can i also have all the needed tools. i've spend like 2 hours to try to get the lock open and tonight, i really wanted to try again and so, i've look on youtube and i found this video and i don't know if i'm lucky but using the same tools and the same tricks of your video i got it oepn in less than 15 seconds!!! thanks a lot! i think i'm going to make a key tomorrow for it if i have the time and i also think i'm going to make a video and put it on youtube! (i'm french and i hope my english is not too shabby)
My guy is severely overestimating what we can see from a distance. I'm on my phone and when he's in full frame, I cannot distinguish a single thing he's showing or doing. Thank God for the zoom-ins. And by Jupiter these are great.
Schuyler, I can single pin pick but really suck at raking, are you doing just an in and out motion with no up and down? also ate you trying to "feel" the pins or just move through the lock? Also my rakes seem to feel sticky as they travel through the lock, advice?
The tension wrench is turning the plug and holding the pins against the side of their barrels, metal on metal, wedging them in place If he releases the tension bar, they slide free again and 'reset', as they were designed to do
Thanks for the video. I have picked a lot of locks, but I picked up an American Lock series 1205 and am on that struggle bus with using rakes. Can it be done using any rake? Thank you for your time!
I had the exact same question. I heard "much later technique". But he meant "much lighter technique". This means you don't press the rake as hard as you would otherwise.
Is there any technique to working with rakes, because it seems like you are randomly shoving them in and out while tugging at them? Great videos BTW, I'm mesmerized and thinking where the hell can I get a set of these :)
Are pins in locks spring loaded? It seems like they have spring tension pushing back down on them when I practice on my home lock with a pair of tweezers and a paper clip I made.
What type of lock is this? Brand and model. It looks like you cut out the windows to see or did you buy it like that? Just starting and it looks like a nice simple one to try.
Looks like a Schlage modified to see the pins. If you buy a key in knob cylinder for any brand lock(about 5-6 bucks on eBay or Amazon) you can use a hacksaw and files to make your own cutaway lock pretty easy. Locknoob on UA-cam has a great video showing how to do it and the quality you get making it yourself would cost you 75 bucks or more from dangerfield for a similar lock.
I loved my L rake, or "city rake", but it broke. I'll be more careful with my next one, leave it as a last resort. It even opened some small padlocks with strange keys. It just slides in the keyhole, scrapes around the side and instantly unlocks different ones usually on the first attempt. It seems useful as a combination of multiple attacks all at once - rocking, raking/zipping, random jamming this way and that.
watching this cause i lost key to my beach house need to find out how to pick my lock so i can get in bought a picking kit couldnt do anything with it so watched this this helped
So, I have two bogota style takes. 1 from Peterson and one from Sparrows. The Sparrows is .023 I believe and the Peterson I have is 0.015. Is the legit Bogota that you have better than the 2 copies? I'm still pretty new to this. But you can definitely see there is a big difference in the construction. When I first saw a real Bogota, I thought it was a pick and tensioner hybrid or something. Can you explain why the real one is superior to the others. That is, if it truly is superior.
I've been searching the net for the Bogota but no luck. Where do you recommend we find one. I used to have a rake that I considered almost magical. It looked like the S rake you show. It eventually broke right where you said it was weak. Unfortunately I didn't KNOW what a great rake it was till I tried others. Wish I'd made a pattern from it. Thanks!
Is there such a thing as a Padlock thats unpickable? ive started picking, and using small 10mm (travel bag padlocks) that appear to have only 2 pins i can pick it with relative ease, but i bought a 50mm padlock which is quite alot bigger and the key seems to indicate about 5 or 6 pins (or possibly more) the depth of the lock is deeper then the length of the key so does that mean maybe there is a "dumby" pin at the back which if picked locks out the rest? is there anything like this?
Find a scrap piece of leather (an old thin belt) or some felt cloth to wrap around your pick handle before you put it in the vice. That will prevent tool marks.
Yeah it’s named after bogota Colombia. The guy who made the first one was a colombian lock picker so when other companies used the design the names it the bogota in honor of him.
How do the pins stay set? theirs nothing holding them up. I thought the keys job is to keep those pins up until the key is out, then the pins fall back down.
I need some help! Really getting tired after 4 hours of trying All the locks seemed picked up except the last two one, not sure if they are picked The tension on the wrench is good but still noy know why it dosen't open Please some help
because of the tension wrench the pin gets kind of stuck up there because you're slightly turning it so to reset the pins, you'd put the lock into the default position - and the pins will fall into place it's hard to explain without drawing it - but look at some of his earlier videos to completely understand it
I just tried to rake a lock with a very high cut spikes, and it stucked dead in my lock and it took me over 30 minutes to manage pulling it out with some other tools and exactly knowledge of what just happened, it turned out that the first spike of the rake went far behind the pins cuz i was doing it with strength, not precision, and because of the high cut rake build I couldn’t just pull it out by turning it a little bit upwards, so, if youre already doing it, make in gentle, without brutality and push that thing too deep in😏 i tried it after that with wery low force and opened it within 5 sec, anyway, im 100% sure if that happened with a one-sided rake it would be much easier to handle this issue, does anybody know why they put 1 or two spikes at the other side?
Show that with a good lock, please it works so well only with exercise locks. the springs are much harder with good locks. expensive locks do not click and do not snap easily.
I recently bought a lockpick set with a few diffrent picks in it but there is a rake that i dont know the name for that you didnt go over it looks like half of a L rake literaly it looks just like someone cut an L rake in half does anyone know what it is called
i just started to lockpick a week a go ,i got the www.southord.com/Lock-Pick-Tools/Locksmith-School-In-A-Box-ST-23.html and in about 5 to 10 min. had all 5 locks open . is this a good or bad sould ?it take less time ?
I reckon Santa is a lockpicker; uses his Bogota to open your door in a matter of seconds, then uses his magical supersized t-shirt cannon to launch gifts into your home.
Haha, who knows what he hides in that beard? tension wrenches... An electric pick gun... a ramset even...
LOL
I have a Dyno Kwick Pick that i purchased over 15 years ago never picked a lock with it before. I watched your video and picked my front door dead bolt in under 3 seconds. Wow thanks for the great lesson on rakes.
Thank you, Schuyler, this was extremely well put together and informative.
Watching this old video while putting together a Southern Specialties order, and sure enough he's using their picks.
Damn right I was :) Still LOVE their products and miss Rich. Seems like the folks who took over are doing a brilliant job.
@@SchuylerTowne Still responding to old comments on an old video.
What a chad!

Never knew having a lockpicking set would sound so awesome
This is awesome, great explanations good camera angles, informative messages, great videos man.
I love the close ups Nice work!.

The s rake is definitely one of my favourites

You really PICKED a good lockpick as your favorite!
Wow, just wow...
Thanks for the video. I have picked a lot of locks, but I picked up an American Lock series 1205 and am on that struggle bus with using rakes. Can it be done using any rake? Thank you for your time!
With the bogota you say you use a much later/laiter/layter/lighter technique/tension. What does that mean? Sorry, english is not my native language.
I had the exact same question. I heard "much later technique". But he meant "much lighter technique". This means you don't press the rake as hard as you would otherwise.
Rakes are so awesome, i love those things lol
I do like that bogota rake I am going to have to get me one Good video
This was so helpful! Thanks!
Is there any technique to working with rakes, because it seems like you are randomly shoving them in and out while tugging at them? Great videos BTW, I'm mesmerized and thinking where the hell can I get a set of these :)
how much do those kits cost? im thinking about getting one and practicing at my dads bank
Are pins in locks spring loaded? It seems like they have spring tension pushing back down on them when I practice on my home lock with a pair of tweezers and a paper clip I made.
You should the city rake with a rocking technique
At least at the last one he took a look on the pins, you can tell it by his movements. 😏
Maybe, but he was trying to teach. I suggest watching his other videos - he REALLY doesn't need to peek ; )
Great videos

I like this... but what about the C and W rakes...
Great video. Is it in and out an up and dawn ???
when you apply the tension, the way its supposed to go will move more then the opposite direction
It's quicker when there are a lot of pins. and if you're experienced enough it can be one of the fastest ways to pop a lock.
I loved my L rake, or "city rake", but it broke. I'll be more careful with my next one, leave it as a last resort. It even opened some small padlocks with strange keys. What lock pick set do you use? Or better yet, what do you suggest for a begginer getting into lock picking as a hobby
Mr. Towne, where did you buy your vice? As me & my father are looking for a great table vice.
did you find one
Panavise makes the best though Amazon has great knock offs for like 20 or 30 bucks like the one used here
watching this cause i lost key to my beach house need to find out how to pick my lock so i can get in bought a picking kit couldnt do anything with it so watched this this helped
Do you generally have a problem setting the first pin with rakes or is it just circumstantial?
Awesome video, I've been using snake rake wrong
Your answer justifies your name. Good job.

It looked like all the pins were set to an even height, is that because this is just a display lock?
Is there such a thing as a Padlock thats unpickable? ive started picking, and using small 10mm (travel bag padlocks) that appear to have only 2 pins i can pick it with relative ease, but i bought a 50mm padlock which is quite alot bigger and the key seems to indicate about 5 or 6 pins (or possibly more) the depth of the lock is deeper then the length of the key so does that mean maybe there is a "dumby" pin at the back which if picked locks out the rest? is there anything like this?

That will prevent tool marks.
It's sorta baffling that locks really haven't moved on much despite them being compromised.
Good Vid. Nice and clear.
Cant wait to get my lock picking set!
Both my parents are from Bogota, Colombia, wonder if the pick originated there......not sure if I should be proud or not if so.
If i'm not mistaken, it's named after the man that came up with the design.
oh shit for reals, that's dope
Yeah it’s named after bogota Colombia. The guy who made the first one was a colombian lock picker so when other companies used the design the names it the bogota in honor of him.
Did it convince you to purchase a better lock?
Where did you go to get your picks?
How do the pins stay set? theirs nothing holding them up. I thought the keys job is to keep those pins up until the key is out, then the pins fall back down.
Tension on the core
Nice demo lock and demo, but it looks like all those pins are the same, no?
Observ45er no they're obviously not. The pins toward the back of lock are higher on average.
you dont need any of these rakes you could just use a paper clip for easy ones but if you are locked out of your house then use the special ones
i noticed in europe they have the locks upsidedown
you forgot to say that a little torque should be applied with the tension key in order to prevent the upper pin from engaging to the lower pin
obviously 😂🤣
are those slim lock picks?
My personal favorite is the l rake
It's the lip you make with the keyway by applying tension.
do rakes work on padlocks ?
nice videos
Thank you. So informative.
Raking is by far the easiest method
Good job
Not only can you see the pins, that's the easy lock in the world to pick. no highs no lows, almost all set to 1s
+Jame Llajdgh It's just a basic demonstration.
It's a cutaway practice lock, for teaching. The weak bitting is probably intentional given it's purpose as a day-1 teaching aid.
i lost it when he said picking "competitively" so are there hood competitions now lol
David E negative Hoods don’t pick locks they break and enter
Brick, not pick
I was able to rake the lock of my desk at work with an exacto knife.
I need some help!
Really getting tired after 4 hours of trying
All the locks seemed picked up except the last two one, not sure if they are picked
The tension on the wrench is good but still noy know why it dosen't open
Please some help
How come the pins stay up and not fall back down again after the tool has pushed them up.
because of the tension wrench
the pin gets kind of stuck up there because you're slightly turning it
so to reset the pins, you'd put the lock into the default position - and the pins will fall into place
it's hard to explain without drawing it - but look at some of his earlier videos to completely understand it
I think it requires less precision to manipulate. the other's can break more easily ... Idk, I'm just making a guess.
And then when you open the lock counterclock wise, with what instrument do you proceed to open de lock the right way?
Plug spinner
what lock are you using in this demonstration?
thank you for your close-up video
so there are lockpicking competitions?
yes. They even have cons and stuff.
Hydrokat thats so awesome
CRBASF2 lol wow, so these competition guys took something badass and made it nerdy.
how do you use the other pick, which turns the lock ?
i want a bogota xd nice video!
how come the pins in the core never get pushed up past the shear line and gets caught there? doesn't even go up past the shear line?
because of the ceased pins the ceased pin are on the outside then the middle ones are picked last
Where can we purchase these rakes?
How do you know which way to apply tension?
Show that with a good lock, please
it works so well only with exercise locks. the springs are much harder with good locks. expensive locks do not click and do not snap easily.
I unlocked my back door with a tension wrench and a city rake. Took a good 3 minutes but it worked!
I recently bought a lockpick set with a few diffrent picks in it but there is a rake that i dont know the name for that you didnt go over it looks like half of a L rake literaly it looks just like someone cut an L rake in half does anyone know what it is called
very good
Dude i have NEVER raked anything, only picked. What could i be doing wrong?
What lock are you using?
That's NOT an "S" rake. It's a Double Peak. Completely different than the "S" or "Snake" rake.
where do you get those lock pics from
just google lockpicks
S = short, L = long?
Where can i buy the same ones?
Pick pals in Australia, they ship worldwide, there are a few others but I prefer pick pals because of their customer service.
Thanks!
where can i buy this lock
nice one
I picked a lock with a paper clip before. Am I as awesome as you? :D
i just started to lockpick a week a go ,i got the www.southord.com/Lock-Pick-Tools/Locksmith-School-In-A-Box-ST-23.html and in about 5 to 10 min. had all 5 locks open . is this a good or bad sould ?it take less time ?
Sometimes people that pick locks don't get to go home afterwards.
also i have another rake that has the 3 points as the bogota but looks like an s rake with one more point does anyone know what this is called
I have been trying for ages and no joy!
it is called a cutaway lock
the L rake seems easier to use
thats what she shed trololol
hmm.... doesn't work for me. I tried it with an ABUS padlock
That's for the info
