    Dixon was bought by AYP in 2004, but before then they were one of the pioneering brands for zero turn lawn mowers. The Dixon ZTR's were the best in their class at the time of manufacture. I own one dating to 1999, and it's still kicking to this day. I dare say that they don't make 'em like they used to!

    Hi Wes! I was a small engine tech at Sears for almost 20 years. Enjoy your videos! Just a tip- always use the Kohler oil filters- Fram is an auto filter and does not filter the oil on a small engine good enough. Also- those oil drains are designed to have a piece of tubing over the nipple so you don't make a huge mess. You also can start those without sitting on the seat by engaging the parking brake. Keep on wrenching buddy!!

    • @WatchWesWork
      @WatchWesWork  4 роки тому +1

      Yeah, the customer sent the Fram, so I figured I better use it.

      The OEM John Deere oil filters will also work as I have found out. The John Deere part number is AM125424c. I’m saying this because I put the same engine in my ‘85 John Deere lawn tractor and I don’t regret it one bit. I even had my fair share of “armchair mechanics” harassing me with bad info about my engine but I’m not willing to let that change my opinion.

  • @NitroGuyJH
    @NitroGuyJH 4 роки тому +2

    Hey Wes, the front 4 10mm bolts that hold the crankcase halves together above the cylinder side of the engine have a tendency to back out and leak oil. In worse case situations they all come loose and the bottom half of the “bucket engine” as we call it will split right down the middle behind the starter and leak even more oil. Another issue is the cork style V shaped rocker cover gasket leaks oil too, I’ve always thrown that gasket away and siliconed it back together after bending the cover back flat again from the factory tightened bolts deforming it due to the thick cork. Not saying that you may not already know this but just figured I’d send ya some tips from what I’ve seen with these types of engines over the past 20 years

    • @WatchWesWork
      @WatchWesWork  4 роки тому +1

      Well the valve cover leaks a lot. But I'm sure they won't want to fix it.

    • @NitroGuyJH
      @NitroGuyJH 4 роки тому

      Watch Wes Work It isn’t a huge issue lol. It reminds me of a customer that brought hers to me except it was a huskee or husqvarna or something another and she said it won’t start and the mower also catches on fire every time she mows within the first 10 minutes but always goes out by itself and I thought to myself why not stop and check it since it should be a concerning issue right? Well her son never showed her that the hood actually flips up to check the oil and whatnot when he bought her the mower. So she’s had this mower for over a year and a half with zero maintenance done and the only reason she brought it to my shop was it wouldn’t start. 😂 Figured I’d share that funny story with ya

    Nice fix Wes: I have a small engine shop and remove the idle screw stop often. EPA does not account for altitude, gas quality, atmosphere conditions etc. I have had many people throw away good mowers, trimmers, even riding mowers because they could not make them run correctly or at all. I have three in my shop right now. Especially with ethanol gas. I have a two year old briggs mower that the carb is completely destroyed due to ethanol gas. Green slime and corrosion. I ran it in my ultra sonic cleaners and got it to run until I bought an aftermarket carb. I have had pretty good luck with the aftermarket ones. The Honda's you have to remove the idle screw and pull the idle circuit plug out and run a mini drill or wire from a wire brush thru it. Usually I go up one niniature drill size and they run great. Thanks for excellent video's.

    This video was like Mustie1 lite. Lol! Caught a few continuity issues like re-filling the oil, then its shown it draining out. 10 out of 10!

      Well in reality I fixed the tire while the oil was draining, but when editing the video I finished the oil change before we looked at the tire.

    Another great video with humor plastered in the machine (by owner), by your observations, and the collision that occurs there after.

    Thanks for the video Wes... I just went through repairing a Troy built lawn tractor with the 18HP version of that motor. On mine, the solenoid on the bottom of the carb bowl had quit working and it couldn't get any fuel.
    Keep up the videos. I like how you explain why you are doing things besides just showing us the how.

    Make sure you tighten those top bolts in this bucket engine, and put some locktite on them.. They rattle loose, and hit the flywheel and it breaks the block every time-- super common.

    I have a John Deere mower with a leaking left front tire also. Your video was a reminder to fix it. Thanks :)

    Never really heard of Dixon! However, thank God that there is another name badge, on the vast line of lawn mowers, that likely all have the same parts and pieces, that can all be charged at a different rate, depending on how you feel, what day it is, and whether you know the answer to some obscure questions that the parts dealer will ask!!
    The good news is, every dealer across the world, will carry one different part in stock at all times, but only the one that you will never need!! The one you need will have to be shipped, at three times the cost of the part, or overnight if you can find enough money, and your neighbor don’t have any goats!!

      They used to be a respected name. They were the first company to me a zero turn mower in the US. They used a fantastically simple friction clutch system. My dad worked for a shop that was a Dixon dealer back when they first came out. They sold like hotcakes.

    Wes, that oil drain on that mower, if you stick a piece of hose on it, you won't get oil everywhere. I think it's 1/2". I use a piece of 1/2" water hose. you can run it right down into the drain pan.

    I was coming across 80 today on my way to Sacramento and thought “Wes lives up this way, wonder when we’re gonna get another video.” I crossed the Iowa line, parked at truckers’ Disney World, and lo my wish was granted!
    Thanks for more great content as always!
