I'm one of those who had wondered about the gats while watching different kdramas. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much for the explanation. I have soooo many questions! I think that if I understood the small details like what you explained, I would enjoy this series even more.
Oh my GAT!!!!!!!
wasn't expecting to learn about korean culture butyou really caught my attention.
Excellent video! It explained things I didn't even know I wanted to know. I'm watching a show now called "Live Up to Your Name", and this applies to as much of it occurs in modern day Korea, and much of it during the Joseon Dynasty (the Emperor has just run from the Japanese invasion the end of the last episode).
I have to really respect this show for historical accuracy with this sort of thing!
We can have historical accuracy in Joseon Dynasty thanks to the Veritable Records of the Joseon Dynasty which officially recorded throughout 25 kings in 472 years. This is one of the largest collection of official history record of a Dynasty in the world. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veritable_Records_of_the_Joseon_Dynasty
Do you think you could explain the clothing and accessories of the commoners? I notice that the lives of commoners in dynastic Korea arent often highlighted and I really like how you explain Korean history.
Nice vid! Watched S1 again after seeing this vid and makes the series so much more interesting
“Train to Busan” is a must watch Korean zombie movie~
This actually got me stressed cause now i'm remembering how great this series is and that i have to wait over 5 months so see the ending >.< omg... i'm gonna cry ~
😂😂😂
5 months later, what the gats!?! Season 2 is already the ending?
It’s herrrre!!!!
Thank you for the information!
2:03 no those hats were meant for the palace guards, and mostly wore red, the purple one is to represent the general of the palace guards. The officers were the guards with plates on their heads
Would you consider making a video about the regions they talk about in the series. The names confuse me so much! And there are so many gates!!!
UP
I CAN’T WAIT!!!! 😭🤧
Can you make a video explaining the Color system(Red seems highest, but not always...), the designs on the robes and what they mean, and maybe about their weapons too- what kind of swords they used etc.
I looked because I wanted to see exactly how they crafted such fine hats so long ago
I love Bae doona!!!
Do a review on what we can expect in S2
Unlike Western dragons, dragons are depicted in the East as gods governing water and clouds. For that reason, when the drought was severe, the king personally held a memorial service in the sky.(There are relics with hundreds of dragons written in small letters to express large letters of water.) Only kings and queens, princes and princesses could use dragon-patterned clothing and jewelry, as the king was considered to be in a high position like a god. The king's concubine and her children cannot be used.
Joseon has many indications of status as well as GAT. White and clean silk, or high-quality silk with distinct colors and subtle patterns, could only be used by royalty and aristocrats, embroidered or engraved with gold or silver foil patterns on the fabric. Yangban dressed up by attaching beads such as jade or coral to the GAT. Ordinary people could also use GAT, but the brim was narrower than that of Yangban. Most of the people wore tough, stiff clothes and couldn't write anything on their heads.
You should check out the movie Extreme Job; the prime minister appears in it~ best Korean movie of the year!
OM Gat!
I did not glue my hat to my hair! Lol~
Nice lecture
Love the music
홋
Should do a video on the zombie virus that changed~
fancy hats
Awesome video~ could you explain why the Prime Minister is in charge of everything??
Lilian Smith Joseon was founded based on the ideology of Confucianism, which requires the ruler to be philosopher and humanist. But advisors to the founder of the dynasty, who were also confucianism scholars, thought that a king is also a imperfect human, so power of king should be restricted and advised by aristocrats who are supposed to be good confucianism scholars. Therefore, unlike many other kingdoms elsewhere, power of the king of Joseon was not very strong. There was always balance and check between royal family and aristocrats, and between different factions of aristocrats (usually these factions were divided by their academic position in confucianism). When power of aristocrats overwhelmed, king became their puppet.
@@epalange0 Similar to the British system.
Im still very confused; it must have been a hassle memorizing all the different hat names
It's not just the hat. The hair jewelry used by the king's women also depends on the rank of the women.😂
When is the release date for season 2
March 13
Was expecting more info for S2?
Question - is there a reason you're referring to the 사또 as governor? Magistrate has been the main English term employed, but honestly I'd rather just refer to him as a Satto or Saddo. If Japan can have Samurai and Ninja, we Westerners can give Korea Satto.
Satto is a term that was usually used for local governors and/or mayors by commoners. There were many different types of local governors or mayors, but ordinary commoners didn't much distinguish them; they just called the officers 'satto'.
Kingdom kelanjutannya dong.. aq nonton cuma sampai episode 6... G seru nih bikin penasaran aja.. kelanjutan episodenya sudah ada kah.. apa judulnya..
I don't think even a typical Korean can tell the differences between these hats in the show except that they are generally called 'Got' or 'God.'

I also noticed that at times they didnt wear their hats at all outdoors~ what’s with that???
Reba Ziemann Aristocrats didn’t wear a hat when they went out for hunting or riding horse for better activity. But even at those times, they wear decorated silk headband and sometime together with small hair whorl.
Clarified~
Harry with a gat lol
Zombies in the Joseon period
킹덤의 배우들이 검을 만이 사용하지만 무슨 트레인잉을 했어요?
왕족 호패설명할때 배경으로 벚꽃나오고 중국음악나오는건 뭐죠

Heard a rumor that Be doona’s acting was controversial since she was too outspoken for a woman back then?? But i loved her acting and who cares!
It was controversial yes, but not for the reason you said. There must have been some mistranslation about the controversy. The reason for the controversy is her pronunciation doesn't fit the time period. So some people got angry over historic inaccuracy. Then again, this show is about Zombies and features fictional prince(All characters aren't modeled after actual historic figure they are pure fiction) So it's funny people got angry over a few historical inaccuracies.
@@dirtiestharry6551 yeah what you said is right. Her acting tone is not quiet fit for the mood they're in. She speaks like modern city girl in the medieval era based show lol
No offense but I'm really curious what kind of people make such ridiculous rumors. It's the 21st century now. Dae Jang Geum, the most loved historical kdrama, is a story about the first woman to become the king's doctor in the Joseon Dynasty. There are many other popular historical kdramas where female protagonists are active. Hwang Jini, Queen Seon-deok, Empress Ki, Petticoat regime, Jang Hee-bin, Dong-Yi, The Land, Empress Cheon-chu, Jang Nok-su, Queen Insu, Empress Myeongseong, The Great Merchant Kim Man Deok, etc. Sadly, Bae Doo Na was controversial because of her awful acting skills. However, in season 2, she got better.
@@tree4752 Korean society back then was basically influenced by confucianism. I'd say that Korean were more influenced by Chinese as compare to Japanese.
@@jackjackyphantom8854 Japan may be less influenced by Confucianism but it is not a country where women speak out. Rather the opposite. Regardless of Confucianism, most pre-modern countries were male-dominated societies. But not all women have lived a passive life at every moment of history. There have been many historical k-dramas in which female characters took the main role and carried the entire show on their shoulders, and Koreans are familiar with it.
So it is embarrassing that people misunderstand why Bae is controversial. The social background in the show has nothing to do with it. The only problem is her acting skills.
However I like her performance in Stranger. If you haven't seen it I recommend it. Best kdrama ever. It's on Netflix.
This material is made from horsehair or bamboo.
That hat's korean name is "GOD".
Gat* - What romanization system are you using?
Also, even thought the korean king's imperial robe has a five claws dragon, their robe's color can't be yellow or gold. Only the Chinese emperor can.If you notice the type of tile that use in the royal palace of the Korean king, they use grey tile as well, not yellow.
Why u Chinese always have to downplay Korean culture under every Korean related video? This is getting annoying! Get a life! Nobody give a damn anymore! Do u still live in the past? It's 21 century now lol.
This proved that China was arrogant and did not see Korea as equal! And many Chinese claim that China was humble, yeah humble my foot!
처음 알았네
I hate the prime minister
