Nice video but I think there is no need to go back and forth between the force law and the potential energy function when forming the Lagrangian. The -dU/dr is the generalized force and in the Lagrangian the potential energy can be thought of as just U(r) as a potential for a central force. If all you want is the equation of motion, that's good enough. But if you want to compare to Newtonian mechanics, then I get it.
