Good points. I think you're right in that the how you raise and manage goats that carries he most influence.
I was told by an experienced goat breeder to find a reason to cull, not a reason to keep. That way your herd should be getting stronger and healthier. You're better off regretting culling than you are regretting keeping.

Definitely has more to do with where and how they are being run. Had been hearing all this hype about kiko...parasite resistant, no hoof maintenance, ease of birthing, and they are born with a super man cape. Cool sounds great...had me interested. was thinking about bringing them in to cross with my boers or switch over entirely. A neighboring farm beat me to it and brought 10 up from the lower 48 to Alaska north of Fairbanks... spent around 30,000 for them as they were some of the premier stock in the US. They were not some backyard homestead stock...all registered and tested and certified. Got them up here and again tested for parasites after the long trip...clean. Around 3 months later he lost 2 to parasites and the whole heard had to be treated or they would have all died. This is not something he was doing wrong he has Nubians and Nigerian dwarfs, alpines and a few boers...they were all tested and were kept in the same way and conditions. Not a single problem with any of them just the kiko. Got to thinking why...the kiko was developed in wide open range like conditions. They have large expanses to walk(witch keeps the feet in order) they won’t eat from the same spot until that piece of ground has weeks to rest( so they have limited exposure to parasites witch is why they rarely got them) the ranging also kept the doe moving witch kept them in shape and prevented large fetal development and helped get the birth canal lined up( witch gives you your great mothering and ease of birth). They included feral breeds of goat to increase reproductive vigor...never met a goat yet that needed any additional vigor of any breed. They said that including the feral goat was the reason for the parasite resistance...not sure how an animal with limited exposure to parasites would somehow have any increased ability to resist them. All that said, how a goat preforms has more to do with how and where you are running them. If you are out on the range maybe kiko... if you are in more of a high stocking rate less ranging situations maybe pick something else. The most important thing for you to do is cull for whatever performance you are looking for...additionally never have regular wormings and vaccinations as it immediately begins to degrade the gene pool of your herd and whatever breed you are running. Don’t fear the worms or hard weather... use them as a tool to cull for performance. This doesn’t mean you don’t treat a sick animal... just make sure that animals gene pool ends with it. So many different breeds of animals have been completely ruined with the practices that many farmers engage in...don’t let it happen to yours.

@@luisguerrero-jo4mi no I never did…however my farmer friend who had invested into kikos ended up losing even more of his kikos to parasites side by side with the other breeds of goats that were unfazed and got out of them entirely and only has boars and Nubians and alpines now.
We raise Boers, really small herd. We've found Boers are more susceptible to parasites than Kikos but they seem to bring a better market price. At least in Missouri

Here in Africa we do a lot of cross breeding indigenous goats with other breeds especially Boers and Savanna but susceptibility to disease is in the end as you said “all about how you take care of them” although Boeats tend to put on more weight faster.

I know I can get a little more gain on grain but mine are on green growing feed 365 its hard to feed enough grain and hay to match grazing cover crops
Absolutely agree, we may abandon grain when I have the ability to use cover crops
In today’s world that sound like an utopia.. I want it to do that but I would probably need to own at least 100 acres to sustain an operation with out additional grains and minerals.
If she getting up to 190. You need to find out why she not producing. If I was breeding for size I would put her by herself and find out what's going on.

This is glorious, I been tryin to find out about "boer goat growth chart" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of HootGoat.xyz ? Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my partner got great results with it.
Your probably more nice to them than me they work for me i don't run a bed and breakfast they are to kid 3 times in 2 years no sack feed no help if they miss a kidding they go on the truck no exceptions my job is to keep them with browse theirs is to raise kids I don't worm I had boar and kiko now down to all kiko with boar Billy's on them
I don’t run a bed and breakfast either, I do what makes the most economic sense. I used to be anti grain but if minor supplementation means a better reproduction rate I do, and since I have the numbers to demonstrate that it is what we do. I kid in the natural season when their food is available, so we only kid 2x in two years but this also has an impact on longevity, a very important metric. I also do not let them miss a kidding, the animal you are basing that comment on isn’t mine, half of this herd belongs to the property owner and they aren’t as ruthless as me.

So do you not worm your goats? We have keko and some mutts but the other goats do have more problems than our full keko and even our half keko goats.
kiki golden Are used to deworm the goats, I even advocated deworming through three families of medications, but now I believe that what you want are animals that are nationally resistant and practices which do not expose the animals to too many worms
